Boyesen Reeds
I just bought a set of seven pedal red cages that had some "lightly" used reeds on them. Seller said they were fine but I dont know the tolerances for these reeds. Using a feeler guage, .007 of space between top and bottom plates at ends. Is this normal or are these done?
Thanks

Others may disagree , BUT I've found if you can see light between the reed and the cage ( same as a leaking intake valve on a car ) you will give up some bottom end snap...The argument is that when the piston drives down for bottom crank case compression the reed will seal , I've found that "theroy" with my own engines to be
.. You line up equal boats, props, motors, and drivers and one has leaking reeds and the other is sealing 100% the sealing motor will hand you your arse...
Been there, tested it and the stop watch will make up your mind for you !
Also I have had better luck with the Tony Doukas Reeds as far as sealing and longevity over any reed I've ran ...

I have found the metal plate that holds the boyesen reeds in to be a soft metal, and as they as in the instructions not to over tighten the screws as it my lift the reeds from the block, But it will bend the metal plate as well which lifts the reeds from the block, it appears that the OEM backing plates are thicker metal, it may be a good idea to make a thicker plate

Try loose'in up tha reed straps, and then retightn'in them...sumtimes it will close up the gap.......If not, I agree wit shorty, replace them...and the TDR's are a better reed in my non-professional opinion

Sounds good guys, I will take a look at the metal plates and screws. Probably a good idea to replace them. Thanks again for you input on these.
Thanks

Yep, I've got a set in my fishin motor and they work twice as good as the BOYESENS did. I got 4 hours out of my BOYESENS before they quit sealing good and spitting at idle. Switched to the TDR's and couldn't be happier. Noticed a MAJOR improvement in the off idle performance as well.
