IMO it is the best way to do it on a looper. With the probes in the adaptor you're reading an entire cylinder bank, have too much chance of faulty readings due to excess fuel in over rich conditions and the bottom two holes are always the hottest so by tuning based on them we are building in a safety factor for the rest of the motor i.e. with those two holes perfect the other 4 should be a tad rich.
Using that specific head bolt hole it puts the probe right in the center of the exhaust port just outside the cylinder.

Gary,I was wondering if you could use a wide-band O2 sensor on an outboard.Back in my mustang hayday we used them because they were more accurate than egts.I didnt know if anyone had tried it on an outboard yet.
