'84 Enchanter with Evinrude 200xp. Ran 66 last year on GPS with 25 shooter at 5500. Looking to rebuild next winter so I'm taking it easy this year. I know compression is low.

Oh yea, I forgot Checkmate 243, I like your starflight.
BTW I'm about to add 9.5 inches of setback to my already existing 5.5 CMC. Do you think the bow will fly with 15 inches of setback. I plan to reinforce the transome before I add it.Dave, '84 Checkmate Enchanter, Evinrude 200XP

Goodsax...
14" is supposed to be about right with the long 'Mates. Do you have a plan on how you're going to brace it? If it comes out nice, make sure you post some pix! Here's a pic of the Pulsare transom from my factory tour. The Pulsare has a unique hull compared to all other 'Mates ever made, and it's obvious it was designed to hold massive power and large motors. There is a large triangular brace at the top middle that is between the top motor mounts, and huge bracing around the 4 sides. Basically a small beefy box. The transom itself is well over 3" thick. I'm going to add setback myself, not sure yet how many inches. Depends on my steering cable length mostly. They're still good so I hate to throw them away for setback...

don't have a pic handy.........
..........but if you look in Hot Boat March 2000, that's my boat! I bought the boat from John Tiger after the restoration was complete and the article was written for the mag. I couldn't afford the new 225PM they bought for the restoration, so I got a 2.5/245 to hang on it. Still has the 6" Detwiler jackplate, Sea Star Pro steering, and all the other goodies. The can is pulled and the exhaust drilled. Stock lower unit with no LWP's. I'm spinning a 25 Trophy A47 5700r's @ 70mph, with the prop 2" below the pad. I'm sure there's wet foam in the hull, so I should see better numbers once I dig out the wet foam. Gonna hang the motor back another 4" for a total of 10" of setback.

Yes, he told me she didn't like the boat. In reality, I think she may have had some health problems at the time that even the comfortable ride of a Starflite couldn't overcome. I believe she's OK now, but the boat is mine!!!!!!

85 17' checkmate diplomat w/ 85 blackmax 150
no pic, its yellow, its the best lookin checkmate ive seen, and it rips most boats on rough water, even though its smaller than all of those offshore speedboats... its not very stable with 1-2 ppl on board, but does good with 3-5... it actually goes faster with more weight, since its starts chinewalking w/ 2 ppl on board at 60(gps), but rips 65-70 with 4 people thru rough chop, it aint no hydrostream, but im positive it will beat any hydrostream (except maybe for virage) on rough water, aspecially with weight on the boat. i need some advice on what to do to make it more stable with 1-2 people on board, im thinkin about adding a pad... i have no doubt this boat can push 75 maybe even 80 if i can get it past the chinewalk--any ideas?

DiecastiC,
I had a 17' 'Mate also. 1992 Pulse 171 with 1992 2.5 XR6 150. When we first got it, the motor was mounted all the way down on the transom, and had a rebuilt prop. It chinewalked BAD at 55-60. Could NOT drive through it.
Did two things at once: Installed a new 24" Laser II prop and raised the motor up a couple notches. That reduced the chine walk to reasonable levels at high speeds when alone, and none with 4 aboard. Make sure your dual cable steering is TIGHT, you have a known GOOD prop (new condition) and raise the motor as high as water pressure and ski duty allows. That should get the boat to where you want.
My best speed was 72 (radar) with a 26" new Laser II and 5.5" of setback with my XR6 150, so the only way you're going to get to 80 is to find the perfect prop, have 12"-14" of setback, and modify the motor. 80 is asking a lot out of a 150. Good luck, and I want to see a picture!
