The Force/Bayliner L-Drive..another flop.. at least kept the powerhead in the boat. All the trouble to design this thing and it is for freshwater market only. Only feasible use for this thing...remember there were some small fishing boats built back many years ago that had the outboard mounted in the middle of the boat. That would at least keep the engine out of the water and it would be easy to work on.

There are many theories abound as to what exactly was the issue but electrical was the constant and the etec was part of it. That’s the only one that I can think of. Etec sleds rock and completely dominate the market because of it. They outperform and last way longer than the other two strokes in the sled market. Etec motors were on skidoos about five years before they bought omc and switched them over from ficht
Your saying there were etec on sleds before BRP bought OMC?
I thought old brp sleds had orbital injection?

I have the dates wrong the ficht was omc 90’s and the etec is brp 2000’s tech. I thought they launched the etec sleds before the etec boat motors but I may have been wrong on that I’m not sure. Either way the point is ficht is omc and etec is brp/rotax and works way better

The update from ficht to etec was using the electronics to close the injector to get very accurate fuel control

It's hard for me to understand how the same people can come up with an intake port that ducts 2/3 rds of the charge directly into the transfers ...

Has auxiliary exhaust ports over the main transfers .. and an RPM controlled guillotine slide big enough to cover all three exhaust ports ....

That would sign off on a project like that submarine outboard ... what were they thinking ...

It’s my understanding that etec injectors use the same technology as ficht. It doesn’t use a high pressure fuel pump. The pressure is made by the injector rod hammering the fuel into the cylinders. If this is true, they can’t have a long life.

It’s all German stuff. It may well have been ficht who started it but it sure was Rotax who perfected it. Never heard of an etec failure. If it happens it’s rare enough not to be talked about in my circles. The opposite in fact everyone loves them. The performance is incredible as well as the fuel economy and the tiny drop of oil they consume it’s very impressive stuff imo. Rotax has always been a heavy hitter in the two stroke world since the 70’s and earlier they were a top contender and often champion in the racing circles. In my experience Rotax two strokes have always been the most long lasting and reliable as well. There were some Yamaha and Polaris engines that were also amazing but their product was more spotty where rotax got it right most of the time. Fuji and Suzuki had some good stuff too but the zuks blew up a lot even though they were fast as heck. Kohler made some great two strokes as well. Some of the old junk jlo, sachs, geez that’s going back a ways lol
