Mercedes techs please.
Got a 2000 Mercedes E320, it has a starting problem. When you go to start it, the starter will bump over a qurter turn and stop and if you keep holding it in the start position, after a few seconds it will start normally.... Put a volt meter on the starter solenoid small wire and when it does not roll, there is no voltage, so know it's not the starter. Was looking it up online and most posts say it's probably the key fob........... I cleaned the lenses on the fob and the ignition switch and put new batteries in. Think it's time for a new fob?

Could be the EIS or the key (not common tho) the bat in the key has nothing to do with the car starting all they are for is the keyless entry. hold the key up to a cell phone camera turn the camera on point the lens of the fob at the camera lens and press the lock or unlock button. you will be able to see a flash threw the camera, it should be a bright flash. this is a short test i use for these problems

Remove the starter and put a thin coat of anti-seize on the ring gear teeth.
Date: August 18, 2008
Order No.: S-B-15.30/68
Supersedes: MB-Net No. 113 dated March 8, 2000
Group: 15
SUBJECT
Tip Start Cycle Ending Prior to Engine Starting
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of the tip start cycle ending prior to the engine starting, this may be due to the tachometer momentarily jumping above 2000 rpm causing the starting procedure to be aborted before the engine starts. To resolve, perform the below steps.
1. Remove starter per WIS instructions below.
2. Lightly coat teeth of starter ring gear with paste, A000 989 76 51.
Note:
Only use the paste specified. Do not apply too much paste as it can cause interference with the signal picked up by position sensor L5.
3. Reinstall starter
