New Idea!!!Arneson drive with turbine?
Turbine with Arneson Surfacing Propulsion system! This should work on a valero YT. Does anyone know what the Arneson drives cost.
To see the drives go to www.twindisc.com
and the turbines go to www.nyethermodynamics.com
What kind of transmission would I use?
What kind of prop?Last edited by filter; 06-30-2002 at 06:05 PM.

Arneson
If you go directly to the arneson website they have all the info on the drives and they also sell the turbines. Old man Arneson has a big 46ft. Skater Cat that can be seen flying across the San Raphael CA. area. I heard the thing has over 4500hp (twin turbines) and regulary hits over 160mph.[URL=www.arneson-industries.com]

Ah....the whine of a turbine...and the secure feeling of dependable and sustained constant high rpm.....sounds good to me. I wonder how the emissions and fuel economy stand up to EPA regs? How's the hole shot and what's it gonna be like manuevering around the dock? Maybe the turbine combined with a jet pump would be even more dependable.

not really new,,,
was at the miami show about 91 or so and heard the distinct power up of a turbine, in water area at marriott marina, made my way down the dock to where the sound was coming from to see an elimonator tunnel i'm guessing 24, gutted, i mean stripped of everything but 2 seats, not even gel coated, just raw glass. this obvious trust fund baby at the wheel w/ shades on just lovin how many people standin around with open mouths. too cool. arneson or some other surface drive. this year i talked to the twin disc reps who've bought arnoson, 12500.00 per. entry level. i belive thats w/a velvet drive trans. i'm not sure a stream has enough weted surface to handle 450 hp. that is about the smallest affordable unit i've been able to find out about, from a helocopter. about 175 lbs. turbines arn't like gas as you can get in and out of the power just by popin the pedel, they have a lag and you could get into a hairy sich and not have that response needed to dance your way through some chit, on a big forgiving hull that just gobbles up rough stuff maby a better application. just my thoughts, party on. fun out.

What about a Cotta
constant mesh transmission? with a torque converter to displace the lag in the turbine? A Jet is too much trouble. The Arneson outdrive would be more efficient with little maintinance. Not sure about what kind of transmission. As far As the EPA they allow Jets to fly dont they? And a turbine burns pretty clean. Can a turbine be madeo to be quieter?

Arneson Drives cost a fortune
$12,000 to start. Does anyone think they can make something similar?

I know Racemore had one a few months ago and would sell for alot less than that. He probably will respond to this later.

Filter, I'm gonna save you a lot of time/money/aggravation. If you want to get near the peak of power on that boat, contact a high perf dealer and buy a 300 Drag, hang a speedmaster on it and if that still doesn't scratch your itch get Chuck Goodman to do you a nitros set up for it. You can spend the rest of your life and more money than you can imagine foolin' with all these other ideas and not run with the drag and nitros set up.
Why do you think every Formula 1 OMC that's ever been moth balled isn't showing up now at an ODBA drag event? Why isn't somebody else running a turbine with an Arneson on an STV? None of this is new technology. The fact is that neither one are cost effective when compared with what you can buy and modify from today's stuff.
I've seen somebody else take a similar approach with a Talon: hmmmm, I wonder what would happen if I took one of those 1000hp stock block Buick V6's like they ran at Indy, stick it in front of a 3 speed auto, and hang a #5 Mercruiser Speedmaster drive on it? The answer????????? Unload a ton of money, a couple of summers of aggravation with a set up that was un-useable, gettin' towed in at every attempt at running and finally ending up with conventional power (blown 572) and a much lightened check book.
