Chris Carson Reed Chatter
Hello,
I just finished assembling the reed assemblies on my 210 Sportjet motor. I put Chris Carson Reeds and stuffers in. I used the existing cages (rubber was good and flat, no cracks). When i tightened up the reed assemblies (using the stock reed stoppers, i noticed a very small amount of gap between the tip of the reeds and the cage. I did not over-torque them. I used locktite blue and snugged them down.
When i spin the motor over by hand, I noticed a small amount of chatter. I assume that this will go away once i use the starter/its running.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Jason

I've done several reed replacements and never remember space after tightening them down.

The rubber swells a bit over the years most likely from ethanol laced fuels or other additives is my guess. When i swapped TDR reeds into mine I could also see daylight between the reed and the block. I blocked them down and now they are light tight so to speak. See this thread for pics

Sounds like you need to sand the Reed blocks flat. Boyeson says to lay a piece of sandpaper on a flat piece of glass. Rub gently until flat. Start with 220. Finish with 400.

Standing open a few thousandths is not a problem,as long as they will close with a gentle touch of your finger.Realize that the reeds open and close about 15 times a second at idle, and only go faster from there, they will land on the cage and quickly crankcase pressure keeps them closed,Chris

When I get a set of reeds from Chris, they come in a nice plastic case. When I open the case I notice they have two small rubber bands holding them together. My first clue that they are all flat is when I cut the bands off, they continue to lay in a flat stack ... just like when they had the rubber bands on them.
I usually assemble reed cages on a piece of flat marble that sits next to my safety clean machine. As single leaf's, they also lay flat.
Now if I assembled a reed block and the reeds had any air gap .. would I think :
A) there was a problem with the reed
B) I had a warped azz block
Chaz = thinkin, Carson offer's the best tech support in the industry ..

Thank you for all the help. I took some time and decided to take these apart and really take a look at what was going on.
First I looked at all the surfaces, and played with the reeds on the cage by gently squeezing where the stop plat attaches. I found that there was a small amount of rock on most of them. I decided to get back to the sandpaper and flatten this out. I started with 400 soaked in oil and finished with 600 grit. I watched a couple of videos of people doing it and followed with the small circles figure 8 patterns. Once I did this, I could immediately see a difference. I then assembled all the reeds with blue locktite and tightened the screws down. I have to admit, it was a little lighter than the original torque i did.
I found that if I did the outer screws first and went all the way till the lockwasher was flat, then did the same for the inner two.... Afterwards I did a final snug of all. I would say it was about 1/8 of a turn more. They still felt looser than I would like but from everything I see, they don't need to be that super tight.
Am I wrong here?
