Machined the end that came through the dash shelf for the Teleflex vent plug. Powder coated the custom fitting. A little challenging to get the hole drilled in the exact location.

No leaks and works for filling and bleeding.

Did this set up on my 28 Skater and current single engine boat. Personally I think the Capilano helm is the best helm for non power hydraulic steering. Never had a problem with one and the variable ratio feature is nice to dial in the steering the way you want it.

Not the best picture of it but all I could find at the moment

Boat came with hynautic helm and pressure can. I filled mounting holes and located capalona as high as i could. Worked out well. You can see oil in hose and there is enough rise to vented cap that oil never escapes.

...having built many triple outboard boats back when, with mayfair/marine machine, latham, zieger, etc., using the capilano helms...we always used aeroquip(now called eaton aeroquip) push-lok 332-06 hose & fittings for a vent hose set-up like above. only difference being, we would install the through-dash fitting on a flat/horizontal surface above the helm, but close to the helm, not on a vertical or angled surface. dash fitting should be stainless. this setup makes it easy to attach an "I-V" bottle to later, or on initial rigging, to fill or add steering fluid. what fluid did we always use, you ask, on a manual hydraulic steering system? regular dextron ll, lll, or whatever you want to call it these days...

After years of using 1 quart I V bottles I created something better. I chose a black fitting so it disappears mounted on my blue dash panels. It is on a vertical surface and with proper fitting it does not leak. I found I can leave this connected propped up on a box with top on for days. When I initially filled and bled my system, I was patient. After I filled and bled everything I let it sit connected over night. Over the next day or two I would spin wheel loc to loc as fast as I could and would see a bubble or so escape up clear hose into bucket. After numerous times eventually not a single bubble would show. 3 years later level has remained the same and cylinders are still rock solid.
