When I was a kid and my parents were looking for a new car we were at a Pontiac dealership and a salesman gave me a 45 record about the GTO. It was all about a high performance test drive on one side and just a song of the GTO on the other. The band on the record was called The Gee To Tigers [made up for this record] at the end of the test drive it turns out it was the Tiger driving the car. Coolest car song I ever heard.

In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath
Runs the all-time loser
Headlong to his death
Oh, he feels the piston scraping
Steam breaking on his brow
Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train it won't stop
Oh no way to slow down
He sees his children jumping off
At the stations one by one
His woman and his best friend
In bed and having fun
Oh, he's crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees
Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train it won't stop going
No way to slow down
Hey
He hears the silence howling
Catches angels as they fall
And the all-time winner
Has got him by the balls
Oh, he picks up Gideons bible
Open at page one
I think God he stole the handle
And the train it won't stop going
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull is a song that explores themes of industrialization, the passage of time, and the loss of control in a rapidly changing world. The lyrics depict a sense of urgency and chaos, using the metaphor of a train—specifically a locomotive—that symbolizes relentless progress and the inevitable march of time.
The protagonist seems to be caught in a situation where they are unable to stop the train, reflecting feelings of helplessness and anxiety in the face of modernity. The song's imagery evokes a sense of impending disaster, suggesting that the relentless drive of technology and industrialization can lead to negative consequences.
Musically, the song features a distinctive blend of rock and folk elements, characterized by Ian Anderson's flute work and the band's progressive rock style. Overall, "Locomotive Breath" captures a tension between progress and the potential perils that accompany it.We have invented the world; WE see
