I guess if hungry enough people ate anything they could catch. In this case "west Indian" means from the Caribbean waters where they used to migrate to and from. Before man interrupted that is. I have seen the darn things miles offshore in the gulf, so they could easily migrate to the Caribbean. I went to Belize, where they serve it on a soft tortilla with veggies and some salsa. Called "dugong" there. Same critter.

We have dugongs here in Singapore/Malaysia, they are slightly different in that they have a spine showing not flat like a manatee.

Sounds like the black bear here. Had a buddy report one dead... been dead, nothing but skin and bones. The Feds ran a metal detector over it and couldn't find a bullet. As they were leaving my buddy asked if that was it? Hey said yea, he said he was going to get the head (fed offense he wasn't aware of). The Feds turned around a grilled them for a couple hours.

That is why when I hit and killed one, the only call I made was to the wrecker.

Neighbor called and said he was leaving his house. Couldn't take it anymore. Coughing and feeling sick. This is a major thing for the tampa /sarasota area. It has never lasted this long or traveled so far into the bay. And get this, it's now heading south along the coast toward Boca Grande and Captiva, Sanibel. This is bad, real bad.

It is an algae bloom that has been around forever, I read someplace that fertilizer contributes to it. However I have also heard it's been around long before fertilizer use.

They can't figure out if it's a plant or animal. That's how complex the problem is.

I think the sharks have come ashore to get more radiation so they can grow lungs and legs..

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, declared a state of emergency on Saturday after a significant leak at a large pond at the old Piney Point phosphate mine threatened to burst a system that stores water polluted with radioactive materials.
