Warlock 23 is a pretty cool boat along with some other west coast hulls.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

This 23 Daytona was put on the diet. Stock 275 ran 100 @ 2.5 mpg. And 50 @ 2.5. And 10 @ 2.5.
I would think 400 hp and new prop technology would run faster than it needs to go.Last edited by tunnelfun; 05-02-2020 at 07:50 AM.

The only 21 Daytona I had was a v-drive. Great lake boat, not good on the big river. I wouldn't buy another one as an outboard. I ran this same 23 as a v-drive also. Ran 80 with 750 holly 454 oval port 9 to 1 motor. Amazing runabout.
The V/8 outboard ran plenty fast, road dry, road good (gobs better than the 21 Daytona, 22 Talon or 22 Velocity boats I had), and did a fantastic job of 4 foot waves at 25 mph without a drop of water in my face. 80 in 3 foot if it's short and steep, still only half as good as my 26 American Offshore.
There's the same 23 with the 454 v-drive in it.

I've been giving some thought as to how to help Instigater spend his time and money.
I wouldn't put a V8 on a splash well transom boat. I wouldn't put it on anything less than the 22 Talon class tunnel. I can't think of anything bigger than 24 that would make good use of it except maybe the 25 Warlock tunnel, mine ran barely 95 solo and dry with a 300x. And I don't think the 22 to 24 foot v bottoms give as good a combination of smooth ride, dry ride, and easy handling as the same size tunnels. We tried the 22 - 24 v's, they take more at low speed, but because of handling issues can't be driven to the same speeds in water the tunnel will easily handle while being very well mannered. I talking about 80 in two foot chop. That's only relevant because some of the 22 to 24 foot tunnels will run 100 plus with that motor till the gas is gone. I wouldn't want to drive any v bottom with a V/8 on the back that fast for more than a 1/2 mile.
The hole point to the V/8 is high speed cruising. So that's what we did with the 22 and 23 foot 300 hp tunnels. Generally twice a week at 100 none stop in light chop for an hour at a time.
That's living large for not much money. You won't do that in a 21 foot pancake tunnel without fear of finding the wave with your name on it. Or a V even in flat water.
Currently I run a twin 300 Promax 26 American Offshore tunnel, it's a good boat. Nice Cadillac ride at 100. But I had more fun with the single 300 hp 22-24 foot tunnels. Less wrenching, more riding.

AZ, always loved those Bakers.
Tunnelfun, great, first hand insight.
I have s friend w/a warmed up 8 on a 22’ Talon on the Ohio River and loves it.
Runs a 100 and still has the power steering!
Only challenge I would make is to the vee’s.
I like a hull that rewards driver input, and makes you work to keep it on the pad.
Im a believer in the statement,”I drive an Allison because I can drive an Allison”
Doesnt mean that’s what it will be as a 100 mph low drama cruiser sounds good too.
The motor may help make that choice for me.
As in, open exhaust, open intake, shorty mid, obnoxious loud in the cockpit or, subtle 400 HP lake motor with Johndeere grunt???I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I did run V/8's with open exhaust and the can removed. It was not annoying. But they did have the front air box on. I guess that box stops a lot of noise.
I think the mid size tunnels have spoiled me.

Gary I think this has been touched on but a key part of the hull choice will be what kind of range you want from the boat. The V8 thirst is legendary. As an example, Kevin suggested a Triad V21. They are great boats and a few people have put V8s on them. But, they have a fuel tank that’s something like 28 gallons (I’ve forgotten exactly). Even with a 3.0 OMC I found this pretty small and would haul around jerry cans often (you can wedge them in the storage areas right up against the transom).
My Scarab that is being prepped for a V8 will have an 80 gallon belly tank so I can actually get somewhere if I want to.
