2 years ago i was at a race in texas and an official told me a flywheel came apart and went into the crowd at some race.
He expected some action from the apba but?
Ask Al Stoker about flywheels exploding on his dyno.
He is very scared re user modified ones as they are not tested like the design of the factory ones.

It sure is pretty , makes a lot of sense to do it that way, but ALL Rich is getting at is that little extra cut on the inside of the ring gear , causing a stress area ,

    Liability is a serious word

Years ago Rich sold me a flying saucer , I think he got it from Bill Gore , Tommy Dunn my motor builder saw it and said , That's not going on any motor I build.

Drag cars have scatter sheilds right?
My father told me about some italian race car that exploded a flywheel and clutch on the start line of a GP in melbourne way back late 50's, lots of carnage to many people.

Look Guys!! Like Ive said before That Ring Gear has already seen 11k many times when on its original Lightened and modified flywheel. and the balance cut that is of concern was there as well. Yes IMO it should have had the weight removed differently But it has held up. The original Magnet Ring was so cut up that 11 of the 12 magnets cracked from Flex. Before I decided to use these parts I personally performed a Dye Penatrant and a magna Flux to verify the parts mechanical integrity. This is a Billet machined Magnet Ring with totally encased Rare earth magnets and is Dynamically balanced (Not Static) to within 1/4 gram at 14k. Every internal Rotating and reciprocating part has been blueprinted.

I'm not saying or insinuating that Flywheels cant or dont come apart, BUT!! Most Lightened and modified flywheels that explode do so on Motors that are subjected to Constant Up and down RPM's unlike a dedicated Drag motor that sees Full Throttle from start to finish and a controlled back down. Heck even the most meticulously built motors can fail even after every possible precaution was taken.

Flywheels that run in rough water events, are the ones that really take a beating. The ones on drag motors got it easy.

Don't the new ones from diamond come with longer Allene and nuts because the ones like that were coming apart?

seems like someone told me that recently

Lighter means less chance of it coming apart at high rpm,s than a heavier one. (providing it aint stupid weak).
This is not just a normal wheel lightened by having its strength taken away, its purpose built from different material to oem !!!!

The centrifugal force is going to be lower the lighter the part is, thats fact and can make a huge difference when testing.
if this part has been to 14,000 rpm and didn't fail I would say thats good, what rpm is the original tested to ?

im no expert on flywheels by a long way, BUT that looks bloody amazing to me.

Just from my point on this, by looking at the way this has been made shows very good engineering skill's and I would imagine the maker has a
pretty good idea of what it can and cannot do.

Be a totally different story if it was made by me in the shed, coz I only guarantee my work for 10 yards (if your lucky).

What was that you were saying about weight vs RPM ?
