Kentucky's Jon Wright made the world's fastest quarter-mile pass in an outboard-driven boat during Saturday's qualifying. His bright red "Tinker Toy" went 156.26 mph in qualifying to crush the previous 149.75 mph record, but parts breakage on raceday prevented Wright from backing it up within one percent for the official record.
The six-cylinder, 131 c.i. Mercury outboard faded to 150.64 mph in a bye run on Sunday after springing a leak in its nitrous system just before the finish. The 7.521 elimination effort actually was quicker than the record speed pass, though, so Wright was sure the boat was capable of carding the official mark.

I've walked around that boat in Person and looked at it closely... Although I'm probably unaware of 95% of what's going on with that rig, it does appear to be a lot of genious in the simplicity... Alot of custom parts and trick thinking, but most of it doesn't appear to need super high $$ manufacturing giants to produce the parts... That makes it more impressive to Me, and in a way proves that the Man behind the R&D can make up for what alot of Guy's spend on someone elses ideas and indeed proves "the Man" maked the machine and not the other way around... No one can ever trump a Man that's smart, adventurous and willing to work...

I have a customer in NY that had a vintage 1989 24' Skater and 2 1989 2.4 BP EFI's that wanted them rebuilt . I tried to talk him into repowering with 2.5's he wanted to keep the rig original. These engines were cosmeticly perfect. But inside I found out of 12 bores they had 7 cracked bridges in the exhaust ports. We discussed the options and we opted to have RUCK steel sleeve all 12 holes. I put them back together with some added compression and he loves em....They have been running about 1 1/2 years with no issues ...

I still run the snot outta my bridgeports, and have put more nitrous through a test motor than anyone on the planet and yes, they have their limits, but it's more than most boaters care to adventure. Dollar for dollar the bridgeport wins hands down as tested on my Hydro:
Drag powerhead= 10 grand (top end speed= 141)
Bridgeport powerhead= $2500 (top end speed= 137)
FYI, the quickest 1/4 mile with an outboard was done with a Bridgeport in 1991, Tom Kunzeman, Sun Valley Hydro, 2.4 Bridgeport with N2O, 7.47 @ 139.92 (Hot Boat Magazine May 1991)
Jon Wright could and should have beat this and I suspect he probably will soon. (right Jon???)
The High Speed Shootout June 5th in Georgia will be a good place to see which is the fastest (white or black or rice). I suspect a white motor will take the pot if it don't breakand yes, Jon runs both

I just bought a 21 eliminator with twin 2.4 bridgeports, that have high compression heads. I am sure they have been hacked on by a bunch of people since the motors are so old. I have never owned anything that wasn't a 2.5 280. But before buying it I inspected the bores, reeds, compression and made sure they were within what I thought they should be. But you never know, unless professional rebuilt it and even then there are no guarantee's these are race motors. I have seen a brand new 280 stick a piston 30 min. into an offshore race. We ran the boat today almost 100 miles and it never missed a beat.
My 2 cents is to buy the very best you can afford and you wont be dissapointed. And listen to the motor, if it's acting at all funny there is a reason. Investigate it before it goes bang.
here's a photo from today the poor thing is covered in salt. The bay was so choppy.

I owned a Bridgeport for several years.I ran 96 MPH with 26 chopper on a heavy azz Hydrostream viking. The problem was that I ran 26 cc heads at 175 lbs compression. My advice to you Tague is to put stock heads on them bad boys. You want to run long hard runs at a good rpm to have some fun.Unless you run a really big prop to keep the rpms down. The tight heads are great for drag racing and good mid range punch but you will burn pistons on those long hard high rpm runs.I did anyway

I said high compression but I should have said higher compression than stock. I am only at 155lbs, which is still pretty mild. I won't run it flat out until I get egt gauges installed. Because you are 100% right running high rpm's for long distances can melt pistons if the mixture is to lean.

Mine, in stock form with thicker 200-style gaskets yields around 115 psi across the board. I can burn whatever fuel I want to run. I don't run a water separator either. I use a Brucato PCU, with Tony's stock 2.4 EFI fuel curve with the soft limiter set at 7500. With the steamwheel on zero, it gets rough and stops pulling at 6800-7000. With it set back -5% it pulls a big prop to 7000-7300, and a short track prop pulls right through the limiter and flattens out at 8000.
The steamwheel is great for keeping the mix fat while idling away from the ramp on a cold motor.
As far as the long high-rpm runs, I have done the Rumble/Point Park poker run twice, and ran for 10 miles or more WFO in 85 degree haze turning a 27 srx to 7000+, water temps never seem to go above 140-150, and the plugs hardly even get any color.
Last year, some people at the Hardy Dam sandbar witnessed my Bridgeport stomping on a couple of 260-powered streams. 1000 feet, from a stop, or from a roll, she was gone ----->>>
