That toy looks like it's gonna be a whole heap of fun when you're done.

You planning on racing at all?

Good luck with it

thanks yeh we want to race the 80 prob in two years but i think i need to get fit to ski it first. still need to figure out the wiring. as the engine used to be a standard 2.4 200, just bought a blown 2.4 efi bridgeport, put the front case on and that is where we are......so trying to get info........every little bit of it helps

Dont think i will get there :D:D:D Grafton that is

If you want to see a killer motor , go to the classifieds and look for the White cowl Simon Motor for $13k us Cheeep .

If you want to win a Ski race pretty sure that would do it :eek: and id guess half the price of a new Opti in OZ ?? maybe

Oz Dude
09-29-2009, 11:07 PM
olmo - don't worry, I already saw that motor and was VERY tempted. Can't spend cashola on a mota right now but. Always the way - just when the perfect dealio comes along, I'm not ready for it. His cowl would even suit my boat!

Just talking to a freight guy in OC said about $1200 to ship it to Aus.Id just like to see something like that sort out those DFI motors, Ski Racing over here is a bit quite these days .

Oz Dude

olmo - that is pretty much the motor setup I want on my Bullet. I think I could prop it to run 2 up in the mid 90's and still have a great holeshot. It would make for a super competitive MOC boat, especially in the long river races where you could stretch it's legs.

Feel like sponsoring me for a few months?? :)

Jarrah, if (when) I put one of those on the back of my boat, I'll make certain you're wearing rubber undies before you get in :p

Just how fast can a 1750 go anyway???? I know there's a guy who modded one, blueprinted the bottom, added a capsule, etc, and it was good for something like 125mph

Hmmm, us and Stinga side by side up the Hawkesbury, now THAT I'd like to see

Hahaha i would too, we can all dream, even if you could give them a run down the straight i think at those speeds you would have no chance in turning the corner.

although it would be good to get the times of MOC back up ahead of SMOC where they should be.

i think there is also a guy in NZ with a 1750 with a 300hp doing 100+mph

either way it is all bloody quick in a 17 foot ultra light weight boat sitting on the motor

Oz Dude
09-30-2009, 01:20 AM
Turn - where we're going we don't turn...only sliiiiiiide

According to old mate here on the boards a few weeks back, that NZ Bullet with the 300PM on it runs 98 or 99mph 2 up.

All I can say to that is add extra hp and tq from Simon Mota and YEEHAA

Oh, and I agree with you on that MOC point - there needs to be a couple of really well tuned MOC boats running. Be interesting to see the new ACE Racing boat once it's finished...

Oz , sponsorship hey mmmmm, You buy the sucker and ill provide fuel for your first race ??

I mentioned it to Bulldog ,who wont buy an Opit because he is Technically Challenged ,say would say mentally as well ,

I will predict when it sells a few guys will say "Shuda Bought that" My neighbour has one and ive driven it a few times :D:D:D:D.

Bulldog wants me to build him a Ski Race motor ,for free ie Sponsorship ,fat chance that will happen considering how he s treated me in the last 2 years:cool:

olmo - all the more reason to buy it for me cause I has only said good things about you, unlike that bloke you flew half way round the world for to set up his steering :D

I do believe that a Simon Motor on a 1750 would be an awesome setup for ski racing. Mucho plenty grunt out of the hole, strong midrange, and the top end power and torque to push into the numbers you need...again, and again, and again...

Can't wait till Bulldog checks in - hehe

went down the river for a ski yesterday but the weather turned to **** and ended up just fitting the new battery and then sinking a few 6 packs and cooking up a mean storm on the BBQ!

Good2Go won under 13's outright by the looks of it. beating all the boys as well.. top effort from the girls in the rough water sitting on around 68mph...

now for the Eels to smash the storm and ill have the best weekend!! im off to the game now! cant wait

Nice. Looked like a typical Grafton B2B weather wise.

have you seen this on the skiracing.com.au site? Maybe Evinrude has woken the Merc beast up a bit. I've also seen Merc advertising on TV the last couple of days as well for probably the first time ever as far as I can remember.

Mercury puts up big prize money for SMOC ski racers

Australia’s up-coming ski racing season will be more competitive than ever with Mercury racing putting more than $10,000 up for grabs.
In the biggest events of the season, SMOC crews using Mercury engines in SMOC Expert class can collect prize-money if they score a podium finish.

First place is worth an additional $750, a second place gets $30 while a third scores $200.
“As everyone knows Mercury is a huge supporter of ski racing in Australia, and this new prize money adds to our already extensive sponsorship and other commitments,” said Mercury’s Guy Williamson.
“SMOC is the most competitive class in the competition at the moment with more than 50 registered teams so we thought we’d really get behind it and spice things up even further.”

Mercury’s special bonus prizes will be in place for the following eight events:
Grafton Bridge to Bridge
Murray Bridge Water Ski Classic
Barry Beehag Ski Race
Sydney Bridge to Bridge
Southern 80 Ski Race
Robinvale Euston Water Ski Classic
Mildura 100 Water Ski Classic
Sydney 1 up Bridge to Bridge Ski Race

SMOC crews wanting to be eligible for the bonus prize money must complete a registration form which can be found at www.mercurymarine.com.au (http://www.mercurymarine.com.au) from 28/9/09.
However, for those competing at the Grafton Bridge to Bridge registration forms can be filled in and submitted at the race. Other conditions include;
The engine powering the boat must have been purchased after January 1st 2007 from a registered Mercury dealer in Australia or New Zealand.
The current Mercury Logo (a minimum length of 36 inches) must be prominently displayed on either the port and starboard sides of the boat or on the port and starboard sides of the deck.

A post-race photo of the team with Mercury hats on in front the boat with the Mercury decal visible must be submitted within three days of the event.

Oz Dude
10-05-2009, 10:12 PM
Yeah, I read that. Pity they couldn't offer support to teams competing in ground roots events or other classes. Also, the prize money at "$30 for second" should have been $300 I'm guessing but someone didn't proof read their own promotion!

Also, what's with the conditions?? Motor must have a certain logo, at a certain length, and the motor must be 07 or later. Well, as far as SMOC goes, nothing older is gonna win anyway. Oh, and if you're not registered and you win then tough bikkies. I'n not even going to start on about the photo having to be submitted within 3 days...

So, come one come all. Spend A$25K on a new motor and if you win (and you satisfy our list of conditions), we'll give you A$750. Considering a 300XS can be bought for $16K in the USA and our exchange rate is US$0.86, my calculator just can't make the damn local price add up, even with freight and taxes  I'd rather buy the bloody thing from O/S, save several thousand dollars, and forego my "chance" to win :leaving:

I know, I know, it's better than nothing but sheesh am I the only one that can see this??

Boats don't get taxed in the same way cars do. If you can pick up a fair bargain, it won't cost the earth to bring a boat into the country.

With the A$ being so strong at present, it really makes a good case to go hunting!

You are required to obtain import permit from Federal Department of Infrastructure for boats on trailers

You will have to pay Australian Import Duty and G.S.T.

not sure if any of you have priced a merc or rudy 2010 motor in Aus over the past 6 months but everythings gone up considerably since last year.
Oz I was thinking of doing exactly what you said but I really dont have the time, contacts, or experience without the Gov ripping me a new one along the way.
I guess dealers get a "dealer" price and a reduced import rate because of being a dealer.
So what kinda profit are dealers in Aus making on high end mercs and rudys?

Oz Dude
10-06-2009, 02:57 AM
Yeah, that's pretty much as I understood it.

That's a walk in the park (and cheap) when compared to bringing a car into this fabulous country of ours...

Even with 1" of paperwork in hand and receips for everything up the wazoo to prove it was mine, I still had to go to the RTA and they had to put it up on their hoist and check everything. I asked the guy what specifically they were looking for and he replied "oh, we're just making sure you're not an international car thief basically".

They weren't there to inspect any of the work in the conversion, etc, only to see that the numbers matched, which had already been proven three times in the process - when it came in, when it got converted, and when it got registered (blue slip). :leaving:

So, what does a boat cost??

US $20K boat @ A$0.86 = $23,256
Add freight A$8,000 = $31,256
Add duty @ 5% $1,563 = $32,819
Add GST @ 10% $3,282 = $36,101

US $40K boat @ A$0.86 = $46,511
Add freight A$8,000 = $54,511
Add duty @ 5% $2,725 = $57,236
Add GST @ 10% $5,724 = $62,960

And you can get a hellavalot of boat for US$40K!

Who's up for some shoppin!?!

I guess dealers get a "dealer" price and a reduced import rate because of being a dealer.
So what kinda profit are dealers in Aus making on high end mercs and rudys?

Calis - let's do some simple math on this:

Merc 300XS @ US$16,500 (new)
A$ @ US$0.86 = $19,186
Add Freight: $1,500 = $20,686
Add Duty @ 5%: $1,034 = $21,720
Add GST @ 10% = $2,172 = $23,892

I haven't priced new motors locally but I'm gonna take a stab and say $100 per hp, or $30K for a 300XS if bought locally. Perhaps a little cheaper but I'm guessing not $7K cheaper.

Trade off = no warranty (which is a load of bollocks - if it's new then it's new). The naysayers will say that if the dealer isn't making money on it then he shouldn't have to front for warranty. Well, all warranty claims go back to Merc to be paid back to the dealer and if the motas are all coming form the same place then start pricing them effectively (remember I started with a retail US figure, not wholesale) and stop ripping the Aussie public off. Same goes for Blue motas!

Oh, and if the Aussie dollar hits US$0.90 you can take nearly another $1K of the end price if you imported one yourself!!

Start taking names and numbers. We'll get a group buy through a dealer in the US and send em over in a 'tainer :p

2004 Supercharged Mustang Cobra with Mystichrome option.

It's 1 of 515 convertibles made in that limited edition series and the only one in Oz. A real modern day muscle car

I sold it earlier this year as I'd put 100,000km on it (daily driver) and wanted it to go to a home where someone would look after it and use it as a Sunday drive car. A really nice bloke bought it and he's gonna have a ton of fun with it for years to come :D

bet you had some fun with that.

When I was in LA at worlds 03' we hired a lower end convertable mustang (not cobra) and failed to realise our MASSIVE suitecases would never fit in the boot. so we looked like absolute tools driving down the LA freeway with the top down and two huge suitcases sticking up from the back seats.....lol

Yeah, boot space isn't a Mustang's strong suit...

From the factory that model was flywheel rated at 390hp / 390tq but it was severely understated. They were dynod at an average of 370hp at the rear wheels.

The wall of torque from that PD blower was awesome fun. Even standard like mine was. If you do a pulley / cold air / tune you get around 100hp additional at the wheels. Easy car to make big hp with.

Calis, even with the suitcases in the rear seat, you still got to put the top down and cruise so it couldn't have been all bad :)

I'm off. Been at it since 5 this morning and doing the same all week so time to go home, eat, and fall down.

Later,

Are you sure?? I thought you paid duty on the Landed Price...

Can you point me to the location of the Duty Exempt from USA part of the legislation please? Me want to read some more...

A$ went vertical this morning - as at 4pm Oz time today it was US$0.8900 - get those chequebooks out boys :D

Oz

I will have to dig it out when I have more time but the exemption has been in place since the free trade agreement.

My father imported 2 boats and a new engine from the USA last year.

You pay GST on the freight but no duty on the freight.

Yes---that would be the benefit of higher interest rates :)

Pretty sure it's GST on the freight and the goods.
That's what they do when ever I bring stuff in.
Unless you can get a boat invoice for less than $1000.00

It is GST on freight on goods. But no duty on freight and no duty on goods if US made.

Sooo, based on my learned colleagues advice re duty, and the Aussie Dollar reaching for the stars (point noted about and agreed to with interest rates - it's the only decent thing that ever happens when they put em up) we now have the following:

US $20K boat @ A$0.89 = $22,472
Add freight A$8,000 = $30,472
Add GST @ 10% $3,047 = $33,519

US $40K boat @ A$0.89 = $44,944
Add freight A$8,000 = $52,944
Add GST @ 10% $5,294 = $58,238

Merc 300XS $16,500 @ A$0.89 = $18,539
Add freight A$1,500 = $20,039
Add GST @ 10% $2,004 = $22,043

I'm putting Bulldog down for a $40K boat and 2 x 300's - anyone else in?? :p

Mondays it is!

Let's see, we're now in Daylight Savings time, but we're also about a dozen hours ahead depending on state, erm, 15 hours flying time, plus waiting at the airport, and then getting through security at the other end, allow extra time for Bulldog's cavity search, carry the 1, multiply by 3.1412 and we should be there by half past Wednesday the week before...

I need a lay down :p

hey are any of ya running a mechanical trim indicator/acturator and if so what brand?

Oz Dude
10-09-2009, 02:27 AM
Calis, look through my posts and find the pic of my dash. I use a Rex Marine 2 slot indicator. 1 for the trim on the motor, 1 for the hydraulic jack plate.

Best thing I've added to the boat. I can go out with an existing prop and know exactly where to set everything and when I have to trim up or down for any reason, I can return the engine to the best angle in the blink of an eye.

It also gives you reference points when trying new props, different engine heights, everything. Even to the point where you know a given prop works better at one engine height / trim angle at one speed, and different settings at a different speed, you just hit the buttons till your setup numbers are on the money.

The actuator for the motor is also a rex part. Like I said, find the pics I've put up and you'll see everything.

Get one - that's my $0.02...

Calis - the Livorsi version can be ordered with optional LED's in the indicators for easier viewing, but it's a fairly expensive part. What I did with mine was painted the indicators red - can see them clear as day.

As for the actuators, the one for the motor on my boat is also a Rex part (#808) and if you're gonna order a mech control from them, you may as well get the actuator sent over in the same box... Come to think of it, I'd investigate the cost of cables as well, although they will push the size of the boax up considerably (so more expensive to ship).

Good luck with the motor installation

Well done on the parts. Billet extinguisher holder? What's next, the Rex Paddle?? :p Half yer luck bud - all the Rex stuff looks awesome and just makes the boat sparkle.

Actuator - you might want to shoot Brian at Rex a PM and ask him what he recommends for the Jack Plate. It's definitely not the same part as the one on the motor (it's much smaller) but I don't have a part # for it - sorry. Brian will know.

Re freight, if you don't care about goods taking a few days longer to get here, Rex will also ship USPS as well and it's a bit cheaper (more money for bling :D).

Just send another email to the sales @ rex and ask if Brian can send you an email with the info you need as you live in Oz. They do prefer phone calls because it is usually easier to sort stuff out over the phone. You don't want to order Bling and end up with Blah :) However as your question is pretty specific Brian will most likely be able to deal with it via email.

It would be very easy to go crazy with their stuff. Gotta draw a line somewhere...

yeah its a worry sometimes.
I remember a number of boats up at region 5 running aground out in the middle of the course!

i grew up on lake macquarie and its a s**t shollow lake on the edges.
You would pretty much fall off, most probably scrap the bottom if it was a big one and simply stand up in water only up to ya goolies in some places. We've bent a few props there. Best one was a prop and shaft (v-drive) on an old 44 gallon drum on the bottom....double wammy. took a while to get her home..

I lived on Lake Macq for over 20 years. I knew every inch of the foreshore of the lower part of the lake up to the island and could pretty much ski in any wind cause we knew which areas to go to. You're right about it being shallow in some spots but at least most of the time you could see the bottom.

One day a mate who was driving his inboard wasn't watching (too busy chatting with the observer) and ran over a shoal along a particular shoreline. We were easy 50m from shore but only in about 2ft of water, leaving a nice motor trail. All I could do was ski to the "deep" side and point. Eventually he looked down and then took his foot off the gas. My wild arm waving followed by pointing to the deep water was read and understood. I didn't fancy trying to push that thing off the shoal nor did I want to stop in it!

The Hawkesbury is worse but cause you can't see anything. Last summer both of my guys stood up on the back of their race skis in the middle of the river as I went to pull them up. Literally just stood up. It was all of about 4ft deep. Not to mention the cars and crap that are in there. I've now learned - if you fall off in that river, float shallow cause you don't know what you'll find if you put your feet down!

I'm off for the evening - giving myself an early mark - catch ya later.

nice dale looking good mate.
those momos are shmico...and I love those steering columns...
very nice...

question: your front lever for the ballest...
I bought the rex gear shift lever without the neutral switch to use for my ballest. my concern, looking at yours now, is the gear lever version might not have enough travel (about 1inch max) but my logic was I liked the fact I could click it back into position ...save bumping it or it moving.

ok but now im just being stupid cause all I have to do is make the starting point from the first notch and not the center....

ok I need a coffee... brain not workin...

dale@che

thanks mate, its coming along nicely...

i was looking at all this last night with the ball valve etc etc.. it needs a good 70deg of movement to get the valve opened enough to fill up.. the other option i thought of was using a 1.5" valve so you would only have to open it say 50deg to get a full 1in of flow..

are you wanting most flow for least lever movement?
I'm guessing a larger valve will push more water through but does the depth effect this?. is this what ya getting at?

I just edited my post. check it out... not sure if thats the solution with my gear lever for ballest....

dale@che
10-13-2009, 06:10 PM
that should work fine,

basically wanting the most flow for the least amount of movement, i think it would be very hard to get a full 90deg on a ball valve using one of these levers...

just dont getm to send all at one:

Note: However, where there are multiple packages to the same addressee in Australia from a single consignor overseas that arrive at about the same time, then the value of all packages will be combined for duty and tax assessment purposes. Sunshine eh? I did a bit of skiing at Shingle Splitters but that was proly 12 years ago now. We usually only ran from there if we were meeting friends from Newcastle (or just for some different water). Have some very interesting memories of that area. Somehow whenever we ran from there it never all went according to plan...

I lived at the bottom end of the lake (M/Park). Our place was on the water just around from the public baths. Once when we were kids, me and a mate paddled surf skis from our place to Sunshine in the middle of winter. Bloody sun didn't come up till we were almost there. Our feet were so cold when we got there we couldn't stand up :)

UPS - they should offer a full and complete service as they are door to door parcel deliveries, including o/s shipments.

As far as the "Tax on Tax" is concerned...dude, don't buy a car from o/s then - there's about 4 bloody layers, each compounding on the other

At $450 Duty and Tax you may as well hop a plane, bargain your azz off in person, stick everything in a bag and bring it back as second hand goods. Hell, you could find a couple of people who want stuff and nearly pay for the plane ticket!

HAHA! well after the wine episode (and the trip) not much $$$ left now mate. :(

Brian @ Rex got back to me Oz. Seems they (as with everyone else it seems) dont do a standard actuator for the rudes. Offered to make a couple up for a price though. Plus some guys on here mentiond you can mode a stainless marine actuator to work with the Bobs jacker.

I like M/park. just around from the ramp is quite nice. other side near powerstation is hell shallow!.

Oz Dude
10-13-2009, 11:10 PM
Oh, the #808 part won't work?? Erk, the Rudes have all those extra cowlings down the lid section don't they?? Nah, that'll never work :( Better get a Merc then :)

The other thing we were considering playing with was to mount an actuator at the front of the motor, just above the transom, so it pointed back toward the motor. When you trim down, it pushes the pin in which moves the slide.

It's definitely a great bit of gear to have and it might be time to get creative and design something. I'd be happy to come over once you have the motor mounted and we can have a look and see what we can build.

If you know the bottom end of the lake, then you know about the shallow area just past the inlet canal for Vales Point. That's where my mate was leaving pretty motor trails in the mud...

When I was a kid you could ski over near Wyee point in about 15ft of water and see the bottom clear as a bell. I used to sit out as wide as I could just so I could watch the fish swimming about. Our place was about 10 houses around form the ramp, just up from the co-op (when it was there).

I probably have seen your boat over time, but there were so many boats over the years it doesn't ring any bells.

Oz

yeah i know Vales.....
there "used" to be allot of boats...ya know whats funny that lake as kinda died boating/skiing wise from what I can see over the past 5 odd years or more. Used to be packed in summer (particularly when you couls still ski from singles splitters) but now there is hardely a soul about even in summer.

me favorite place to ski is wolstencraft point. typically cause late arvo it was pretty sheltered (unless a southerly) and it was straight across from us

I use the stainless marine gauge for both my trim and my jackplate, all you need are the gauge and the cable, and a L bracket, I think that stainless sell these too, install on the inside of the BOB'S jackplate..

You can't ski from Shingle Splitters any more? Why?

I love that area over at Wolstoncroft. Beached the boat there one day and had a snooze for an hour or so just sittin in the driver's seat :)

We had lunch at Wangi Wangi Workers one day and didn't notice a southerly blow up cause that bay runs East/West. As you know the lake, you know how bad a big Southerly is. Came out of Wangi Bay and got slammed. I had my Mazco on so had stuff all holeshot and we were copping 4ft waves from both Gwando and M/Park, each at slightly different angles. Had to throttle up the wave, then crest over it gently, then go down the back of it, and start over. Man was I glad when we finally reached Wolstoncroft. That's the only day I ever thought I was gonna get sunk.

As for the drop off in boats, no kiddin! When I was a kid there'd be 40 boats in our bay alone. All skiing, all day, all weekend. Now you could pretty much shoot a gun there on a weekend and not hit anything. I think it's because the Central Coast is now too close to Sydney for people to consider it a holiday spot. It's more of a day trip area now and nobody will drag their boat 2 hours to ski when they can go 1 hour to the river. All of the people who used to ski on the lake from Sydney are now going to places like Port Macquarie. It's that need to be far enough away from home time-wise to consider it a holiday...

Yeah, that's sort of what I was thinking. I haven't looked too closely at the Rudes so not sure where the take off points would be - I could explain on a Merc but that's not going to be of any help now is it! Mount the motor and then we'll see :D

[QUOTE=Oz Dude;1796978]You can't ski from Shingle Splitters any more? Why?

I think it has something to do with some of the locals near by. Thought it was getting too busy and therefore dangerous I think. You still can ski off the east facing side (looking out to pulbar Is) but the popular bay facing out to Eraring has had massive rocks put along most of of the foreshore. The ramp is still there but they stopped people driving right out to the point and being able to turn around. So there is poles and fences and crap up everywhere. Really killed the place.

You can still go off right near the point but cause they put a swimming net in you cant go closer then whatever the sign says....blah...blah..
its shame.

I thikn its like 2 - 3 times a year you get a MASSIVE southerly and its just huge chop, almost like a swell like you say.

Think your right about the central cost.... plus not so many people can afford boats now I reckon and use them just for holidays.

Well that's just plain chit isn't it! Wow, they really blocked off the point?? And they put rocks in? Idiots. I bet 2 or 3 people whinged about the "noise" or what not. Man I can't believe the stupidity of those in charge in this country.

It would've been pretty shiny in 1970 that's for sure.

It went downhill for a long time but last time I drove past the place (about 3 years ago) it looked like it had some major cash dropped into it.

Considering there's about an extra 20,000 people in their catchment area than there was 15 years ago, you'd think they'd be rolling in it by now...

I first went to the area as a little fella in about 1973. A lot has changed since then!

Lake Macquarie's demographic now is retirees and unemployed people. Neither can afford a boat, and the retirees like the lake quiet.
I moved up there for a marine job about 5 years ago and couldn't wait to get out of the place after two years. The whole region has a stuck in the 70's mentality and will never move forwards until it gets past it.
It's a shame because the area could be dripping in money from tourism, business etc, but is stifled by local communities (specifically unemployed people) and councils.
The reason tehre's no money aroudn Lake Macquarie is unemployed people work off the books and don't own properties, so it hurts the income for councils or local businesses.
We couldn't get money out of people to work on their boats, they all wanted show quality work for cost plus 10%. So you'd spend ages doing nice detailed quotes for them, and have one of the dodgey backyarders tell them they'd do the exact same thing with the same materials (which they never did) and we'd see the boat again in a month or two for repairs and alterations to the complete **** they'd had done.
Mind you, I made good money on my house over the four years I owned it.:D
If they could kick all the unemployed bogans out of the greater Newcastle area, the place would explode.

Regards, Andrew.

re duty and sales tax
Have you tried the old get a declaration and ship a box of crap out and have the vendor bin it and return a new one in the box.
It was done all the time in the 80's
Just get a dealer to separate powerhead and g/box and do it twice to get a new one...

Ship it to a commercial vessel and then its 'ships spares in transit' exempt
I would think a megayacht could have the same componets you guys use.

If you bought a component from the US and it blew up they would have to ship a replacement wouldn't they...cant pay twice on that can you????

Then there's the old ship it in and forfeit it only to buy it back at auction.
That works particulary well when you ship the container load of left shoes only to be followed up by a shipment of right shoes later

I might be missing something but why is there duty on an outboard when there is no OZ manufacturere to protect?
In the 80's a manufacturer only had to tell the government they COULD make something and it got protection, you can challenge that.

We had a top day today in the bullet, but saw nobody else out. We were lapping from Wisemans to Lower Portland ferry.

Finally got the boat sorted after 3weeks on the sidelines. Our alternator was overcharging which has fried the ecu. Fitted a new alternator and swapped ecu.

Did heaps of prop testing. 25 tempest got 81mph at 6200rpm boat only,76mph one up. Finally tested our worked 28chopper, 1up it went 78mph at 5400rpm. Will raise the motor up 2inches next week and hopefully crack 80

Hey Tony, yep got a 7200limiter now:reddevil:. I got no intention of using it though, although the Tempest went 6200.
We got some more cup put into the 28chopper. It worked cause it pulled Rod out off the pole instead of the Quick releases. Borrowed a 26 chopper which i thought was gunna kick arse, but it did nothing. Wouldn't pull Rod out and was crap boat only.

On that note can't reccommend Dave from Blue Pacific Marine enough. Genuinely goes out of his way to help us out.

Tony, I've got a handle on the Tempest now so thats our 2up prop, saving the chopper for 1ups.

We watched the 1up last year from Rosevale caravan park. There about 20ft off the bank going around the starboard marker at full speed. Or the tiny park just before Cliftonville. You sit on the outside corner, but see them coming up cornering and powering out plus the river is narrow there. That would get some good before during and after photos.
And yeah too wet for pools today:(

i may be bias but i quite like our spot from our park, on the inside of a slight bend (almost straight) but it means the boats come past close and at full noise, last b2b alien force came within a foot from our bouy

Oz Dude
10-26-2009, 02:16 AM
Can't decide if I want an elevated position or something down on the water. I have a fair few low level shots so perhaps something a bit higher for a change.

Am also thinking something on a bend so I can get a coming or going shot. I wouldn't mind being in a spot where I could see the outside of the bend before to get a head on shot with the compression spray out to the side, and then also so I could roll off another shot on approach.

Was considering the park on the other side of the river right above the red markers in the upper part of the river, down off the end of Ebenezer Wharf Rd (before Coromandel Road). Went for a walk through the bush there a couple of years back and remember there were some pretty cool vantage points.

The boats will really be steaming up toward there but have to button off to get round the marker, then hard on it again up the next straight.

Really don't know.

If you were looking for a photo of a boat, what would you want it to look like / be doing??

Going straight?
Round a bend?
Inside / Outside?
Front on / Side on / Rear View?

Ok SCREAMA The boat and Tennessee Tomawawk the Tenessee ,smashed a hole in the side of the Bullet in a race had it repaired and sold it to a young guy who put a 135hp on it for Skiing .It used to pull 7400rpm with a 28 Chopper .

nice mate! is that an old skool 17ft connelly next to ya bullet?
Not sure I was alive when those got taken :D

I remember those Tennessee's. I think one of my first race's was being one.... firefly I think it was called.

I got some photos of my craft coming soon for ya....

I always liked those connelly.....fast, lightweight... and remember people wrestling the crap out of them at GP races in big chop....

hey Gary
A bit of history there. It is funny how small Tennessee Tomahawk seems now. It didn't seem small at the time. Just fast!!! I worked for Roger Connelly for a little while at Riverstone around 86 or 87. Did you find owners for those hydromotive props?

A friends brother still has a 17ft connelly, they get on the hawksbury quite often,

Tomorrow is the day as well, the new boat hits the water,
one thing I have learnt is the bleeding trim pumps and latham steering is a pain in the ass, 3 hours this arvo was spent just doing that!!!

Ran the motor for around half hour today and she didn't miss a beat, tested gearbox and all gears are there, drive unit filled with oil, prop ready to go, laptop on charge!

Ok ,

Those 17 Connelly were a handful to drive ,Yes Greg sold all the Hydros ,However have 2 more T4x 28 & 20 ordered, will report in.The Tennessee looks small but it was unreal to drive in any water, raced it many times cant remember it being beaten .I meet RC a few times before he moved the operation offshore.
Connelly pics as requested ,we ran super class that year cant remember exactly 93 0r 94 ??.We were the first outboard to Wisemans 4th spot when my sking partner had a huge fall and smashed himself .Those were the days when Superclass started in one line off Dangar Island very very scary ,i floated down the Hawksbury for an hour while an ambo came ,people on the bank saying there are sharks in there mate ,one guy threw me a stubbie of VB ,i wasnt sure to drink it or pour it over me for shark repellent .That afternoon a huge storm hit Sydney pic attached

dale@che
10-29-2009, 08:06 PM
yeh the boys will have the cam ready to take some pics... wont get any video today as i need to dial in the fuel maps but will get some asap for you guys

the helm is a eaton one supplied by connelly and Graham Mason made all the couplers etc to mate it to his steering coloum, Graham also made the water pickup and mounted the steering rams etc etc, he was a huge help :)

prop is a 15x26 3 blade cleaver, it is on loan from "The Gun" but if it works it will probably be brought, Scott up in QLD has a 4 blade cleaver as well which James is very keen on, the 3 blade will be a lot cheaper tho and will still do what we want tho so it is a tough call at the moment... but with the bridge coming up fast he needs to sort it next week..

We were doing about 45-50mph.
Come down to Carinya we'll be there Sunday. Borrow my gps

Dale, we had a **** morning. Jacked the motor too high, wouldn't go any faster than 60 from Brooklyn. Pulled into Carinya put it down then hit a log and smashed the nose cone, could only pull 55mph to windsor. On the way back to wisemans we had engine alarms going off. When you saw us we had just got a skier back up and i was stressing.

Looked like there was a big Turbosmart photoshoot at Greg Houstons place.

What is Stu up to these days ? havent seen him for a few years.

after a few days of head bashing against the wall we got it back on the water this arvo for a good shake down run...
Ian from Autronic sorted out the ignition problems so massive thanks go out to Ian :)

this thing is going to be fast... on just a quick squeeze of the throttle it hit 80mph and wasnt even on boost or trimmed up hard.
will dump the run in oil tomorrow and fill with some of Brad Penns finest and get back out there on friday for some long runs and put Shantelle on the back for her first ski behind it.

Nice water this morning:D We did more prop testing
With a 27 trophy and a 110kg skier and full tank we got 79mph. A 27 tempest went 78mph and 25 tempest got 75.5mph.
Biggest difference is the Trophy wont go around corners if its jacked up but the Tempest is better to drive up high.

Hey Mate,

It's nice that you're starting to get some numbers down on paper as well as a feel for different prop types and how the boat reacts to them. Once this weekend is out of the way you'll be able to start mucking around with engine heights and see which props respond in a positive way. The more baseline data you have, the better you'll end up fine tuning everything.

You didn't get your car to the podium (or a national championship!) overnight so just have the same patience with the boat and you'll get the results you're looking for.

What class are you guys running on Sunday and what is your race number??

I'm gonna try a totally different angle to anything I've shot in the past - High up on the outside of a bend. I should be able to get a variety of "coming" and "going" shots so we'll see how they turn out.

Critta - seat time is what it's all about mate. When I used to have my boat up on Lake Macquarie, it was good in some ways when learning to slide as you could take as much room as you liked. On the other hand, the river is a really good trianing ground cause you have a lot of bends to negotiate so you have to learn how to turn smoothly.

Once you are really comfortable in the seat and you know how the boat will react to different steering inputs, the sliding will then follow. Nothing beats going sideways round a bend in a bullet

woodduck - glad to see you guys will be here for the race. I'm guessing you'll be leaving early tomorrow morning for the trip up. I know there are some fires down the south coast at present but I don't think anything is hampering the highway. It's gonna be bloody hot up here so make sure you keep yer fluids up

Nice pics Jarrah  Good thing your wife bought herself a new camera eh :D

I did get some shots (not 1400 like SOME people though) however I wasn't at the location I wanted to be. Unfortunately due to the extreme risk of bushfire in my area, I had to stay close to home just in case. The location I was intending to go to would've meant I was an hour away due to the ferry being closed and I just couldn't risk it. There were 3 spot fires from lightning strikes on Thurs & Fri night alone

Anywho, I have the shots, they're on the camera, and the camera is at home with flat batteries (I shot till it went flat!). It was fairly hazy where I was so I don't even know what they're gonna look like. And if they're not as good as Jarrah's, be buggered if I'm gonna put any of em up :leaving:

I'll have a squiz this weekend and see if there's anything worthwhile.

Oz

post them anyway...
mine are pretty awesome even if i do say so myself, however the more the merrier, and if they are fuzzy you have a great smoke excuse..... dont let anyone tell you about tradesmen blaming there tools :D

Great photo's mate. If possible, can you email me any other pics of 44 (Silent) and 46 (Stalker) please.
We run both boats as a 2 boat team. Stalker was 1 second of first after the protest took the win of Alien Force in Smoc whilst Silent had motor issues and ran 8th or so.
Yes it was damn hot but just made the beers so much nicer!
