That's the marine trimming game for you. All winter you sit around scratching your ass, then come November, everyone remembers they have a boat tucked away behind the shed!
We'd be booked out till xmas early October at the places I worked.

Regards, Andrew.

Well had it's first race today, went well, won under 13 girls by a lap.

It was blowing hard down there and it chopped up just as they were about to start, she averaged ~70mph with top of 76! she had it at 78 yesterday on the river,

we had it up to 90mph at 5000rpm playing around yesterday,

Now i just have to get the whole turning thing and i am good to go.....

i added a bit more weight which helped a heap. now i dont get thrown around at the sight of a ripple..... my first run i had too much boat in the water, trimmed up for the second and added about 8 MPH :D

As you get to know the boat you will feel every part of it out and know how much to add (or subtract).

Next is learnign to wrestle it through the rough and also slide / turn. Practice young bedowan :)

Guys

Is anyone making side steering steering rams ( tilt tube to wing plate ones) in OZ
or do you just buy Latham, Imco etc from the US?

Thanks

woodduck
12-14-2009, 05:57 AM
Don McClymont, at Advantage Marine. Has them in skirace boats, F1 tunnels and off shore racers. 03 9555 6230

Olmo on here has some good pics of the set up. Think his setup with a plate, 2 rams and an adjustable helm (2.5 to 4 turns) runs to about $2500.00 Au.

6 months on the steering is great no problems what so ever ,Woodduck put me in touch with Don who was great to deal with ,highly recommended.Olmo 40 (Dan) helped me fit it up when he was over here ,he has Imco single side ram on his Hydrostream which is also good ,I think it works out about the same $$$ as the locally made stuff,so id go with the dual system.IMO Imco is the pick of the US stuff .

i have a mate who has a 2 inch crack in one of the blades of his prop. Does anybody know anybody who repairs props?
Does anybody know how much roughly it would cost?
once they have damage can they be repaired just as strong as they were or will it be likely to break again???

any info would be helpful......

gmjim
12-16-2009, 03:05 AM
Theres a guy out in windsor who is sposed to be really good, i will try to find out his details for you!
I think if the prop is virgin (not thinned mainly) you should be right to have repaired.
I have a chopper which cracked & i was told by the prop guy up here that it was to thin to worry about.

olmo40
12-16-2009, 05:09 AM
On these pages somewhere is a prop repair tutorial. basically drill a 1/8 hole at the end of the crack and tig weld then grind to shape.

This is a friends lab he asked me to post some pics and a short story, so here it is if anyone is inerested.
It has a 97 225 EFI MERC, with late model double bearing/dual water pickup gearcase, and a fresh powerhead. Its a very tidy boat, a nice fitout with a bit of rex gear.

2 x intercom helmets in wizard bags $1050
1 x DC hydro size 9 boots in wizard bag $1250
1 x RPM firesuit $250
1 x pair neoprene wet shoes $25
1 x record buoyancy vest (not confirmed)
1 x medium race suit SRA approved $200
1 x garmin gps hand held $200
1 x holeshot $220
Various ropes and harnesses $250
Sparco drivers seat $200
23 laser prop and 23 trophy prop
Long range fuel tank

With all this gear he is asking 22k, the boat owes him well into the 30k's, with the 23 laser it has hit 78-80 mph at approx 75% throttle with 6400 packs.
With the right setup this boat should do 85-88 mph maybe touch 90.

 and all the best for Xmas and the new year.

hi guys new to this site ,does anyone know what would be a good engine height for a 21 connelly with 300xs ,we just brought dave from connelly boats own race boat very light , we have put a 27 tempest on it and it cavatates and drops back in pulling up one skier not sure what height it is at the moment , anyone with an idea at a good race height for f2 and even a social height woulkd be a great help

Thewayweroll
12-29-2009, 06:42 PM
Hi Mate ,

Id start with the prop shaft 2inch below the pad , The tempest is a fast prop but lacks holeshot , taking the vent plugs out will help. Id think you will need somewhere around a 28 trophy for that boat,I am on the Gold Coast and have a Chopper 2 , 30 pitch with some extra cupping you can try ,Also "Critta" on here somewhere i read has a 28 Chopper for sale , if it is the one i sold him it would probably go good on your boat as well .

What motor is it?
If its hitting the limiter at both depths u need a bigger prop

I've only tested with skiers on, but we went back to back with a 27 tempest and 27 trophy. At 50mm under the pad with a 110kg skier out back we got 77.5 with the tempest and 78.8 with the trophy.

Since then we've taken the motor up 20mm and a 25 tempest gets us 78.5 and a 26 trophy goes 79.8mph

I've got a 28 pro et coming and with a bit more height hoping to get 83mph

I forget the distance for u13 girls but its about 15 minutes or there abouts from memory unless they have changed it ?

I've been told 8km then 20km. So 20km sounds right with 15mins

Calis, mate i ummed and arrghed for ages bout what to do. I want to do alot of offshore training so decided the Force was a better option. Plus the wife loves the Force and she has a fair bit of pull.

Dale, yeah going 300xs. Neneh will probably outski it within 12months, but i still got 2 young ones and 2 more on the way:D

dale@che

congrats mate! twins hey!!

my misses is due on the 10th may! getting close now!

300xs on a 21 will do 80 pretty easy.. im glad james didnt go the outboard route.. shantelle was doing 80 on the river in the rough before the nats so we would be building a new boat again!! LOL

how old is Neneh? will be looking for a new ski partner start of next season for U13's..

Twins due late June. At first ultrasound got told only one then next ultrasound we're having 2 bubs.

Neneh ski's u16's. Alyssa is 11 but hasn't had much training time. I think she'll step up next season,

I don't think theres any u13 girls atm that can go as fast as Chantelle for a 2up team.

dale@che

get Alyssa out there training, she dosent have to run as hard but if she can run 70+ for the bridge next year then that will do for the record,

twins will keep you on your toes.. i was worried we would have twins but definatly only one in there!

how where the connelly boys?

they were slow but i knew that would be the case, ive known them for a long time and know what they work like, from memory it was 6 weeks late but the total time was only 12 weeks from start to finish.

James got a little ****ty that it took so long but the finished product is spot on. the flow coat on the floor is perfectly done and the price was very right.. they did a great job on the extras like the moulded dash and windscreen etc...

last i heard force was 6months waiting list...is it true?

Depends which hull u want. I think its 9months on the 21 now, but u could get a 24ft straight away. I was very lucky that someone pulled out and i got their spot.

Dale as far as money goes, there was a $3500 difference between the Superclass and Force. I priced them up with exactly the same base features. Its only when u start putting the force options in that the price blows out. Not sure what the Connelly hull is worth but the SC was $24500 and Force was $28000

dale@che
01-18-2010, 06:31 AM
is that trimmed or just bare hull and seat shells?

the connelly would be a bit cheaper for a light weight with ballast etc

Boat is a lightweight race hull setup. We've just added a few small things to make it a little more social. We could of gone lighter but then u can't walk on the deck or outboard well such as Tuff e Nuff and Alien Force.

Its pretty much setup as a race/training boat for my kids. If they decide in a year or 2 they want to go faster then i'll go inboard.

Yeah Force are doing the whole package. Boat will be ready mid April.

Dale that price includes std fitout with front seats(no rear)
RX3 has been on stands since jambo 08. Neneh says she wants to race it, so i'll store it till then. Gotta say ski racing with your kids is alot more fun.

Calis

Hey mate how big is the tank?. I have two pumps but the tanks split in two and one spills over to the next. Both sections have a pump. My tank in total is 280lts I think maybe bigger.

And which fittings are you needing? for the tank, outlets, piping, all of it?

We put the tige pickup on mine I think it was. Force use them as well. Its around $700 I think but supposedly the bee's knees. You can see one on the back of this Force. Sorry I dont have a pic of mine.

Calis
02-07-2010, 02:25 AM
nup, but I think typically they are mounted on the same plane as the v...

thats all I know really..

steelroots
02-07-2010, 02:27 AM
one skier about 80-85 kg the other about 90 ,boat alone was 86 mph so they didnt wash off that much, had about 90 lt of fuel on board also we might set it back with some spacers and see if we get some more out of it as it is a 6 inch jacking plate might get another one or two mph who knows

dale@che
02-07-2010, 02:31 AM
yeh some boats have them flat and others on the same plane as the V, it seems to be after reading a lot on OSO that on the same plane as the V will give more control but rob more speed but flat will give slightly better control at high speeds and less drag...

so im a little stuck which way to mount them and everyone we speak to has a different idea..

02-07-2010, 02:36 AM

yeah its tough cause I know ya dont want to be dilling any more holes in that beautiful new transom then needed but it might just come down to trying a few mounitng positions.

so it may be a case of do you need them or do you need them on now? *shrugs*

dale@che

hahah yep trigger finger is a little happy!! LOL

we need them on there now, at slower speeds it is a little bouncy, once above 80 it is pretty good, with the S80 running 2 up im guessing the speeds will be around mid 70's so they will help a lot.

Calis
02-07-2010, 02:48 AM
haha fair enough well you have the HP to not worry to much about speed at the moment yeah and doing the S80 the more boat controt the better... so I would be inclined to mount em on the plane of the V and go from there...

but thats am unedumecated answer:p

dale@che
02-07-2010, 02:53 AM
after reading this post on OSO i think flat is the go! it makes perfect sence now.. to maintain the control and keep the speed flat is the go,

you ever snowski?
how'd you learn to stop?

didn't you learn to snowplow with the skis tucked in towards each other?

Let's consider an extreme..
What happens when you mount the tabs VERTICAL and put them "down"?
You snowplow, right?

So if you go from vertical (fully snowplowing)
to horizontal (no snowplowing), then you can see that the more you stray from horizontal, the more snowplow effect you will have when you tab below neutral.

When tabs are mounted at a matching angle to the deadrise, and you run them neutral, then there is no snowplow, there is just additional "hull length". This is useful. But when you have to run them below neutral, you start snowplowing.

There are arguments both ways. I guess the real answer depends on how much tab you need to run at racing speeds.

nice post and makes sense .... and in thinking about it in a chine walk sor porpousing senario flat would be the go cause water is flat and the tabs are also flat so that stabilization would be most effective........

im feeling more edumecated already! :p

pity its tough to really simulate these things

yep it is hard to think which way is right. on the rc boats i used to race we always mounted them on the V, but we ran wide but short tabs not thin long ones LOL

any you guys heard of hydromotive props ? few guys in the rigging and setup forums belive that a 28iv ob might be a better prop than a pro et any thoughts

Thewayweroll
02-08-2010, 02:37 AM
Yep ,I dont think the Q/OB, the Q/OT maybe similar ? I had a 26 Q OT which pulled 2 skiers to 77mph at the limiter 200 EFI Merc 1850 lw Bullet ,I had a 29 Q OB which was ok ,but i found my 29 Tempest a better prop .I ordered a 28 T4x which is lost in space at present .Hydromotive are Good props ,If my T4X turns up i will let you know .I am not sure you will do better than what you got now, with the exception of a Chopper 2 cupped up around the blade tips .Just my 2c worth.

what prop is a tx4 is that a turbo prop ? happy with what we are doing at the moment ,the f2 boat that won sth 80 last year does the same speed and is a 19 force so they say

The T4X is a Hydromotive 4 blade over hub prop,I havent run one yet ,I doubt they would carry the Con like your Pro Et.

ok tabs all mounted up, after speaking to a few people today with 120mph Connellys we were advised to put them on the same angle as the V, so thats how they got done...

Back in 1992 , a big time MOC team from Sydney took a disliking to me ,It was a case of mistaken identity ,they mistook me for someone who owed them money about $80,3 of these guys bailed me up at the Gold Coast Classic , and demanded money ,matching jackets and all, then proceeded to tell me pay up or get a beating ,Id never seen these guys before ,however id had 21 Pro Kickboxing / Boxing fights ,Ski racing was a sport that was easier on the body .Lets just say an evil friend of mine looked up their accommodation every year at Grafton for about 3 years and cancelled it and we re booked it ,we used to sit out the front and wait for them .They never appologised or said another word to me for years to come, even when over of their crew said you guys should say sorry to "Bulldog ' they said F,him.I still laught about it when i take a leak in the middle of the night :D:D:D.

I was out on the hawkesbury on Saturday for a social ski. Was having a wonderful day, the whole river was like glass and there really wasn't too much rubbish in the water. The water police has a 20+ ft RIB out with 3 officers on it and a PWC doing checks of the boats there. (There were 3 trailers in the Windsor ramp car park, so not many).
They were conducting breath tests of drivers, observers and skiers, whic I am all for but I'm not sure doing this on a rainy day when 3 bots are out with 4 police offers and 2 craft is an efficient use of my tax dollars but that's another story.
Anyway, they did a check for safety equipment and informed me that a fine will be in the mail. They tried to tell me the boat (lightweight Bullet 1850) carries 5 people, so I need to carry 5 lifejackets. Which is wrong, I only need one for each person in the boat. He also tried to tell me that my bouyancy suit doesn't count.
The other thing that really upset me was, when he signalled for me to pul over, he came towards me at at least 5-6mph. I leaned over and pushed his boat away and he was angry because he pushed him off. When I advised him that I would rather he not hit me (especially at that speed), his response was "it's only rubber".
Anyway...does anyone seriously carry an anchor, bucket, whistle, torch and oar in their lightweight ski/race boat. What am I ever going to do with an anchor (except punch a hole in the side of the hull?). I'm all for safety but come on...what do I need a bucket for when I have 2 bilge pumps and a fire extinguisher?

Calis
02-14-2010, 06:48 PM
Yeah dont you just love those random pull overs.

It is a pain to carry all that stuff, anchor especially, but unfortuantely they will be D**K's about it but I consider an anchor something I always carry to keep em off my back. Some people create an anchor box and glass to the floor or bolt to keep that thing in place and out of the way. I must say though I've had a number of situations where Im glade I had an anchor on board. But as you say its a pain in the neck with smaller boats.

Now....I've also heard it said that you need to carry the same number of jackets for the number of people on the safety label of your boat but that is just plain BS!!!

Take a look at the latest safety campaign on the Maritime website on jackets:

http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/campaigns/lifejacket.html

All they say is:
How many lifejackets do I need on board?

You need one lifejacket for every person on board. Make sure that they are stamped with the Australian Standards logo and are in good condition and accessible.

The boating handbook also says the same thing and there is no mention of requirement to carry as many jackets as maximum capacity stated on the safety label. If so that would mean if you go for a blap by yourself you'll need 5 odd jackets in the boat. :p

I would dispute that one for sure.

Oh and another thing I do is keep a copy of the boating handbook in the boat so I can pull it out and make them find the sh*t they are try ing to tell me in it. They HATE it...hehehe.

I find the Water Police and their actions are a discrace in QLD as well ,I videod an incident on Australia Day where they wrongly abused my son threatened to impound his boat and called him every name under the sun ,these dicks thought he was speeding in a 6 knot area ,when they realised they were wrong as the area had been moved, they did a power turn beside him and sped off .I have put in 2 calls with no reply to discuss the video ,thinking current affair .However i do carry the required safety gear in my 1850 LW Bullet .

It sucks but rules are rules. I know a guy that carry's a folding anchor (holds it down with bungy loops) and a folding bucket. Rule just says that you have to have them, not the type.

Calis
02-14-2010, 06:58 PM
Yeah see thats just s**thouse behaviour.
Why do they need to be such wankers. Its just power trippin cause if you really love boating you woudlnt treat fellow boaters like that.

I understand them razzing someone for out right dangerous and reckless behaviour which puts peoples life at risk but thats about it.

The guys who tend to be decent are the ones that when they pull you over they are actually intersted in your boat and your day and understand inspections are just formalities but ultimately we are all there to do the same thing. ENJOY BOATING. :D

no doubt revenue building puts pressure on these guys to "fine, fine, fine!!".

jarrahtin
02-15-2010, 04:50 PM
i carry a tiny fold up thing that couldnt hold the boat to save its life....... and the location the water builds up in my 1750 is behind the fuel tank so a bucket is flat out useless......... but i suppose the rules are there for a reason. i tend to carry all of my required jackets up the nose, however the jackets are so old and sh#tty they would prob assist in sinking more than floating but they are there for water police not for use. if we have anyone who is a week swimmer or a young kid, generally they wear there own jacket.

we are only ever in the smooth flat river, no 6 foot swell here so a lot of the so called saftey equipment i find is either not needed or we now have a better method of covering that saftey measure they should be reviewing the rules to cover.

yep very eventfull weekend,
Cropper and Vardy were very lucky when there boat went up the bank.. they would have run sub 30min too..

there will be footage from that one as well as they found the vid cam smashed to pieces and got the card out of it when they rolled the boat back up the right way.

yep its finished, tore the bottom out of the boat, its a shame as they worked so hard and had the pace to smash the record

very very lucky, he said the rudder went between him and Cropper and before he knew it he was getting pulled up the bank, he hit a tree pretty hard but was not injured

on a better note James spoke to Argo this morning and they are sending a guy around today to have a look and sort out why we had these problems :)

Calis

crap! yeah I've heard you can go up the bank pretty easy at the S80, let alone having the boat take you there and I cant even imagine hitting a tree on my ski like that.

Cassells are good as dale says.

might want to check this out first then give em a call : http://www.cassellmarine.com.au/

they are the only place I could think of sending anyone for parts etc. pity Aus doesnt have a market big enough to support more guys like this.

as far as second hand go fast boats what are you after? aint many great dealers out there, best to keep your ear to the ground with blokes on here in ski racing and the like and keep on www.boatpoint.com.au (http://www.boatpoint.com.au) , www.boatsales.com.au (http://www.boatsales.com.au) , and www.boatsonline.com.au (http://www.boatsonline.com.au) as well.

Vic ski racing website seems to have alot go through it as well:

Seems that finding the best deals are usually through word of mouth as things come up.

Thanks mate, i am chasing a firefly of all things, a bit older than the smick stuff you guys are playing with, & hard to find these days, i am on to one in melbourne (if it is still avaialble?) through bullshot who gets on here, but i am struggling to find suitable transport for it, & the girl just won't allow me to drive down & get it!! (Uderstandably, i guess, it is a long way to drive!!!!!!) Also had another lined up in sydney, but it was sold before i got there. Anyway, one will turn up eventually, i just like to look around when i go to sydney or brissy, it's worth it just to see what is around!
I also quite like the matra missile hulls!!!

Your not wrong about the lack of quality marine retailers in Aus, i went to my 'local' merc dealer today, i was quoted $48.00 for a part that retails for $8.50 in the U.S.!!!!

I checked out the Cassell web page, it looks exactly like the type of place i am looking for!

keeping in mind the only advantage of a place like cassell's is you get to look at the item before you buy....... if you already know what it is you want then importing is always going to be cheeper (but longer). i have been known to go to Cassell's to view the rex gear and then import from Rex

The problem with the local marine retailers is they largely deserve to go broke.
They mark up 200% commonly, anyone who pays it out of some misguided patriotism is not quite right in the head.
Fact is, they buy stuff through importers, the importer AND the retailer double the price each time. If they brought in their own gear direct, they'd actually have decent prices.
Not importing directly is pure laziness, no more, no less. I know, I've worked in small marine business that import directly.
So, why should Australian consumers support lazy business people with poor or non existent business models, when we can import directly ourselves?
Why should we care if someone's business model is fundamentally flawed, and why should we be made to feel bad if they have to stop trading? I didn't force them to start selling products, nor did I choose their pricing formulas....
Business is very simple, compete, lead or go under.

Regards, Andrew.

I think the main issue is Globalisation. 10-15 years ago it was very hard to find info and or parts. Now you just "Google it" find the product then most of the time you can enter CC details and then it arrives at your door, sometimes with out even a phone call. This process cuts out all the middle men and saves $$. It just depends on what your comforatble with. Some people just like to go to a shop, touch it, see it, feel it and get advice on how to use it or fit it then pay more for that personal experiance. And some guys just sit on the net researching their needs and then buy it online.

You know, that sounds remarkebly close to how me 'bachelor' weekends seem to end up!!!
I'm keen as!
Unfortunately she knows what W/E grafton is on, she would suss us out in no time, i reckon we need to find a more obscure race weekend somewhere, maybe bundy thunder?????

Dale, the connelly is a 2003 model i think with a fresh 300x, you prolly know it, it is called Thirsty Merc, i saw it somewhere once, i have liked it since. Has just popped up on ebay recently, try this link.

this one looks pretty clean also gmjim, and cheaper!:
http://www.boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=8109852

but this boat looks vaugly familiar for the year (1993). Robos had one this colour which they flipped trainging out sydney heads in the 90's sometime. My mate ended up buying it and repairing it but couldnt get used to the connelly over his 21 bullet so got rid of it. hmmm...although it says "never been raced". Serviced by Ziggy....
