anyone have any opinions and suggestions on the best custom made canvas covers out there?

I've been recommended Windors Boat Canopies.

snowys at blacktown did the one on rush.. cheapest and could do it quick.. i dropped it off at 8am and he had it done by 4pm..

it fits perfectly and no slack in it so it dosent flap around!

windsor couldnt do it for over a month..

there are 3 ties on each side to pull it tight they go down to the trailer, then 1 rope at the back

dale@che

here is a vid of Shantelle from today,

3 ties is good.

I dont know if my just imagining this but I recall some boat covers have no tie downs???

not sure if thats practical but it looks great

dale@che
02-28-2010, 02:38 AM
these are just elastic straps that hook over, they work well

Calis
02-28-2010, 02:43 AM
would have been pretty good conditions for the titles.

im guessing she won??

is it just me or does rush porpous a bit? maybe just its just in that speed zone...

dale@che
02-28-2010, 02:58 AM
yeh mate she lapped every boat bar 1 i think..

it dosent move once you get over 60 but it was ****ing rough there and he had trimmed in and the tabs down and full of ballast with 300L of fuel LOL..

under 60 before the tabs went on it would bounce around a lot now can just drop the tabs down a little and she sits nice..

Calis
02-28-2010, 03:01 AM
cool I was gonna ask how the tabs are going...
yeah that vid looks like shes in a different race mate.
future champ there it seems...

dale@che
02-28-2010, 03:10 AM
they move very very fast.. a little too fast but ill sort that out this week hopefully,

aiming for world titles next year.. no reason she wont make the team. she will only be 13 tho..

that vid is ****.. didnt realise i had shrunk it down that much.. ill upload a better quality one now!

Calis

Hi Guys,
Just want to hear anyone opions on making one of these going quicker.
I get 63mph now with stock 175hp Merc 19p prop. Tried a 21p Laser got a few more mph but was loading the motor too much and wouldn't pull !
Can these hulls do 80mph ?
I am thinking of setting it up for circuit racing.
Any help would be good.
Cheers,
Mick

Calis
03-21-2010, 09:34 PM
hi mate, i dont think you'll get up near the speeds your twanting with the existing 175. need something a fair bit bigger... prob stating in the 250xs range.

also the weight of the boat will play a big part no matter what donk, prop, setup you play with.

my opinion is looks like a good ski/cruzer. keep it that way and buy something already setup for circuit. i.e. lightweight, bigger donk or modded for that use

some other guys on here could give you a more "educated" answer :D

jarrahtin
03-21-2010, 10:55 PM
CALIS is right, Haines are one of the heaviest boats around. Not sure on the signatures but the haines hunter's were made with fibreglass like 3 times thicker, not good at all for circuit racing, too slow off the mark.

as for top speed.... i have seen a 3l 225hp on a haines hunter 1800 do 83MPH also a 2.4l 200hp do not much less on the same boat.

if you were going to do some rougher water races the Haines will do well but in smooth water i would imagine the bullets, labs and force boats will be too quick

just my $0.02

mt1973
03-22-2010, 01:00 AM
Thanks for your input guys.

I did plan on alot more hp at some stage. What sort of $$ are we talkn over here for a 250xs or the like ?

Suppose I was thinking this may be a good starting point, even the current setup it is alot of fun in the chop when alot of other boats are going back on the trailers. I have had some comments at the lake about my love for rough water. I have always had fishing boats, this explains liking driving fast in rough water.

Calis
03-22-2010, 05:41 AM
no worries mate depends if you want a brand spanka or a pre-loved motor. A 250 would be a good start to get that boat really screaming along. Merc 250sx or Etec 250HO. brand new these are mid to high 20K mark plus you might have to change jack plate and steering and prop/s as well.

but i've seen all sorts of prices depending on who where and how loved the motor is.

yep rough water can be real fun. :smiletest:

mt1973
03-22-2010, 06:51 PM
Do you know of anyone that my be good talk to about playing with motors.....$20k is abit to much for me at this stage.

Is it worth spending $5 to $10k on a motor ?
Will I see much perfomance improvement ?

Maybe i should get an inboard ! I'm a car mechanic and a V8 is alot more familiar........they just don't seam to be as much fun to drive.

Cheers,
Mick

Cool pm sent.

This gives me some more questions sorry guys...

I'm guessing 3.0lt is gunna give my boat more weight ?
My boat is heavy already would it be better for me to look for a 2.5lt efi
with that kind of hp ?
I see some for sale on this site anyone had one sent over and what kind of dollars are we looking for shipping ?

Yes the 2.5L is lighter but it doesn't have as good low end pull, the 3L has much more low end grunt, just something else to think about

how high hrs is high?

2006 Mercury 250XS. Done approx 260hours. Has been serviced and maintained by Race Marine its whole life. Is sealed and ready to go to run SMOC or would make a great social boat motor as it is unbelievably economical on fuel. Contact Noel 0408730695 or rogue_racing@iprimus.com.au

Thanks for the reply Calis. I have sent email to Noel.:smiletest:

By High hrs I meant a motor that is tired I guess ! fishing motor I would say 800+ not realy sure what is high for performance outboards.
Being a motor mechanic I like the idea of putting a motor together.
I was thinking if I could find something cheap enough to start with it might be good project.

Hi Guys

I have taken in all advice in regards to my boat...thanks all
Now i've fitted a jacking plate and started playing with engine heights.

Got a 200hp 2.4 and gunna do all the bolt on stuff to get some more hp.
Shaving heads
WH31 carbys
Reeds..boysen ?? happy to hear of any other choices.
Aftermaket exhaust tuner.

Has anyone got any of this old 2.4 left for sale ? I'm mainly after carby spacer and velocity stacks.

Cheers

gmjim
04-12-2010, 06:49 AM
I wouldn't worry about a tuner, what you have already is about the best for the 2.4
What carbs are on it now?

mt1973
04-12-2010, 07:02 AM
The 175 on the boat has wh34. I'm using the 200 as parts(it needs a piston)
I've been told heads, carbys, reed block and tuner gets me upto 200hp, then if shave the heads add spacer and stacks that's about it without machining the block...May do that later don't know if it's worth spending too much cash on a 2.4 ?

Howdy All :)

Contrary to popular belief, I'm still alive :D

Got my entry in late last week for the Powerboat...and have spent most afternoons since trying to find the boat under all of the junk and dust.

Hoping to fire it up 2mor arvo. If I'm early enough I might even see if it still likes the water. Just out to have a bit of fun this time round. Entered social class and taking a co-pilot so I don't get lonely :)

So...who's entered what??

Holy crap!!!! dead man typing!!!!!!!
What weekend is the powerboat on Oz?

mt1973, the 2.4 is a great platform for modifying, just depends how much money you are talking?
Searching on here will land you heaps of info, but i think this link for T-rex's Cherry 2.4 is regarded as one of the best combos for a 2.4.
http://www.byuboyz.com/trex/Cherry2.4.htm
Also, what year model is the 175 & the 200?? Does the 175 have a vertical or horizontal front half? you will need to swap that aswell if it is vert. for the 200 horz., aswell as the 200's tuner, carbs etc.

Do you have any shots of The Secret 36 and Windsor Riverview 35.
Both boats were in the Offshore class.

Interestingly I haven't seen any boat with those names offshore racing.

I would have thought to compete in a class you should actually race in that class

Yes mate it does. its interesting cause I've seen some older connellys with
a non v running plank.
They are all essentially the same. I'm told the superclass is slighty wider then the connelly.

dale@che
07-11-2010, 07:01 AM
only the 19ft had a flat plank, all the 21's have a V plank,

the super class has wider sides, the free board bends out a little more, chimes down they are the same..

thanks mate, got my web guy doing a whole new site for me i just need the time to sit down and give him all the info which will take a few days and time just isnt on my side at the moment doing my normal car work during the day and having a 9 week old daughter at home there isnt a lot of time spare!

the boats are 21ft long and have very clean lines, nice straight bottom, nice moulded in windscreen with dash board moulded in, we are in the process of getting the second boat layed up and some new seat moulds made to suit the look of the boat better than the normal bucket style seats and a new rear lounge with moulded in head rests etc

the fuel and ballast tanks are actually seperate to the boat unlike many others where they are using the hull and bearers as the tank, this will mean that there will never be a fuel or water leak from either of the tanks, the standard boat will have 250L fuel tank, 200L ballast tank etc.

the boats are made with vinyl ester resin and directional glass, the hulls have Klegecell foam used to stifen the hull and sides etc..

that boat is a full resin infused boat, it will be getting a 300xs on it and will be used as a training boat. the second boat will also have a 300xs on it and then a stern drive boat will be made and fitted with a 502 mercruser with a pro charger on it.

The boat looks good.

Etec 250HO rev limit is 6150. There is a soft limiter than comes in under that around 6050 I believe but I can't tell that one on ours. Basically the EMM fattens the fuel oil mix to slow it up and protect it. If you have skiers run prop around 5850.

The new and improved Haines hunter had its first run on the weekend using 0.7 litres an hour at idle,
went straight to rev limiter with 27p shooter @ 75MPH. If anybody is running these 250HO motors on a heavier boat i would love to know what props you run as i will need to go shopping.

Sounds like something worth doing, then i can check out your "force seeking missile" at the same time. where abouts on the river are you?

"force seeking missile"
haha...yeah well its just a little dig at force really.... just bit of fun seeings they are the aussie boats of the choice for the moment...

we dont have a place on the river. do you?
I can meet you anywhere.
I'll just put in at brooklyn and cruze on down.

I did brooklyn to just before sackville late after the H120 so no problem in travelling. :D

Yeah, we have a place at lower portland
between lower portland ferry and cliftonville, if you are ever in the area you and see a the haines drop in for a beer.
if we were to meet then, off the top of my head, wisemans ferry would be ok, almost half way to brooklyn and has some sandy patches.
also past there is mainly mangroves and not many beaches but whatever suits you i am easy

Saw you guys sitting on the bank yesterday. At least now i know who im starring at. I took the girls to Sackville for a social ski.
I've got a fair few props at my van at Wisemans your all welcome to come and try. I was running a 29 Tempest plus when we skiied past. Boat only has got 91mph, too big with the skiers though. On our 1800 Bullet 1up it got 80mph.
I thought the best prop on the Etecs was a Raker?

72mph so far but that was with 27 shooter and the motor almost 4' below pad, can't raise yet as the ski pole is too short. Hopefully next weekend it will be lengthened. Should get more yet. Yeah the sign writing is not done yet so it does look like luke's, but the extra 25hp gives it away. love the motor!!! There is supposed to be a usage meter built in but I havn't worked out how to set it up yet. So far I can only get the clock to show greenwich time, it won't save. But I also have not read the manual yet, partly because I am a man and instructions are for women!!!!!!

Thats 2 from 2 with 29' Tempest, sounds like it might be one to try

sounds like its coming along mate.
Are you using icommand that came with the motor?
if so go here and click away at your own leisure. http://www.evinrude.com/BRPHtml/EvinrudeWorld-I-Command/index.htm
I havent got around the whole system yet and keep pressing wrong buttons, but hey when im out on the boat im having too much fun to care, but when I come in I think, crap, I should have checked this or that. :D

since ya still a way off from level with the pad try and get the add on water pressure flow sensor installed if you haven't already so once you go higher you have some visual on what its doing, just to be safe when raising the motor.
SKU no. is 765038 but i think there are different ones for the different models of 250HO. not sure what you got but I'm ordering one soon.

Yes ICommand.
Are you saying the motors dont come with water preasure sensors.......... all the sensors in the motor (some seeming a bit pointless) and no water preasure sensor??????

Calis
09-14-2010, 08:11 PM
yep. to my knowledge the water pressure sensor is additional.
also the HO comes "high flow" water pickup screens but you can also purchase "ultra high flow" screens if needed.

this is good to know as well: http://www.etecownersgroup.com/post?id=4718127

And the sweet spot for the 250 in RPMs at WOT is about 5600- 5800 apparently.

Calis

its gone 82mph so far using an evinrude 25' 4 blade something..... I cant remember what prop it was but I think it was the Renegade...lol

I'm using a Raker II 22' for all round use and it does 72mph maybe 1 or 2mph more trimmed right out and motor jacked up with only me before hitting the limiter at 6000.
gotta watch the hight with the 22' cause the smaller pitch ventilates much easier when too high. Raker works best around 2inch to maybe 1.5inch off the pad.

I have the 29' Tempest Plus but been to lazy to test. :p

I saw your getting 92 or something from the force?

i spoke to the mariner who said due to the saftey systems in the etec and the fact that (at this stage at least) we will have no need to go above 2 inches below pad the water preasure sensor is not required, however i have ordered the memory module, which will give the ability to have fuel management and some other things added to the gauges

i will be testing 1 or 2 props this sunday at our park at lower portland, you are welcome to join if your not too "lazy". Just look for the HUGE new retaining wall.

Critta - What props do you have that i can try out as the time has come to get this sorted. Also your running a one of those mercury things so i could only really test the flo torque props.

Calis
09-16-2010, 07:06 PM
mate, would love to this weekend but got a big family doo on Sat and Sun. I will be taking the boat out but from some family "cruzing" time only :-)
next weekend or one after is good for me also so I'm still ok to come on down any of those days as well.

"we will have no need to go above 2 inches below pad the water preasure sensor is not required"
yeah hes right.
Do you have a hyd jackplate? if you do I would say get the sensor straight away but looks like you dont?

Do you have a hub kit for the etec to use flo torque merc props? if not someone should have one or I can send you mine.

jarrahtin

"Do you have a hub kit for the flo torque merc props? if not someone should have one or I can send you mine."
Yeah i have one but have not actually swapped one out before, although it doesnt look too hard.....
No just a manual jack plate, the setup is too heavey already without the need to make it sink

Never mind there will be plenty more weekends, the fridge will always be stocked.

i just know, and Critta will possibly back me up when i say how different the experence is having a beach to ski from. we will be triing to be up most weekends so if your in the area.........

"i just know, and Critta will possibly back me up when i say how different the experence is having a beach to ski from"

What makes it evan easier for us is we are in freash water.
the last motor got flushed about 3 times in 20 odd years

Calis
09-16-2010, 07:38 PM
yeah that is a plus for sure. We've always had inboards and having to pull it down twice a year due to salt.
i'm still a be wary of brackish water but.

Calis
09-16-2010, 07:53 PM
"no just a manual jack plate, the setup is too heavey already without the need to make it sink"

my bobs 6inch is only 20kgs... so if ya turf the manual plate which say weights 8 -12kg, thats only 8kg extra

fare enough, hey how good is the trim height stopper...... so simple yet soooo effective.

82mph is extreamly good from a 25' prop on a 21 foot boat, thats like 5% slip, would be nice to see what you get from the 29' Tempest

Calis
09-16-2010, 10:05 PM
yeah I've seen the trim height stopper but never changed/used it. it is good for sure.

Calis
09-16-2010, 11:46 PM
its semi-light weight i've been told around 350 - 400 we think but it was never weighed.

hey funny question I was looking at the manual the other day and realised the flush hole ..lol... do you use it? i was just using the rabbit ears to flush.
the things you miss.....

Hahahahaha
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
yeah the etecs have an attachment to plug the hose almost straight in to the tell tail instead of stuffing arround with the ears
we probably wont use it too often being fresh water but it is a cool feature, Do you have the memory module? are you using the fuel management features??? like fuel used this trip, total, current usage
i should be getting the memory module hopefully today giving all the fuel management functionallity

Calis
09-17-2010, 12:01 AM
i always loose the ears so im glade its there LOL.

I dont believe I have the memory module.
I can see the fuel flow/usage page. is that the one you mean?

I got 2 x 3.5" gauges with my etec. Is that what you got?

jarrahtin
09-17-2010, 12:12 AM
217104

Yeah we got the 2 large gauges,
we also got 3 small ones to fill the wholes form the old gauges
so we can run all data at once
Yeah the fuel usage page is the one, but the page only displays current usage unless you get the memory module.
we will be able to tell the system how much fuel we have in the tank and it will tell me-
>how much we have used
>how much is left in the tank
>warn me when getting low
>tell me how far we have come on the tank (with GPS module)
>estimate how far we have to go before empty (with GPS module)

apparently it also adds some functionality to other areas but i need to look into it

@ $120 it seems well worth it

Calis
09-17-2010, 12:23 AM
yeah it is worth it for sure.

"we will be able to tell the system how much fuel we have in the tank and it will tell me-"
thats what I need. I have a sensor in my tank but its not hooked up to anything so essentially I dont have a fuel gauge so that is the next best thing.

whats would you guys go for keeping in mind its only a social/training boat and will not be raced

250 pro xs
250 HO ETEC
250 verado

olmo40
09-26-2010, 04:41 AM
Suzuki 250 ss or Yamaha sho 4 stroke ,

dale@che
09-26-2010, 04:46 AM
the ones listed are the only options unfortunatly

Calis
09-26-2010, 04:56 AM
hey dale will be good to see one of these boats when its out mate.

well you'll get two solid "250 HO ETEC" votes here from a couple of us for sure but I really cant give you an 250 pro xs opinion.

but my general thoughts are from what I know:

1. etec looks better i reckon
2. pro xs is lighter by approx 1 kg then the etec pro max is 229kg v's 230kg for etec
3. the verado is heavy! 288kg
4. etec and verado are quieter then opti
5. you may want the speedmaster gearcase that comes with the mercs which has the low water pickup
6. etec has the Lightning gearcase which some dont rate as a true lower water pickup but plenty are racing it and it works fine.
7. etec has some pretty amazing fuel economy
9. etec icommand v's merc smartcraft

and on and on it goes......lol

Calis
09-26-2010, 04:57 AM
oh.... and i believe the opti's are cheaper then the etecs. cant say for verado.

some say the extra dollars for etec are worth it :-)

dale@che
09-26-2010, 05:03 AM
thats all the stuff we could think of, i think we might go with the 250 pro xs as it has the raceview dash setup etc and the price is pretty good, if you dont mind me asking what did the 250ho cost you? pm me if you like,

will be 3 weeks till this one is on the water i reckon, going to get the trim started this week hopefully..

Calis
09-26-2010, 05:04 AM
oh...and I've heard there have been a fare few optis going bang particularly gearcases.

not many etec breakdowns in racing compared to optis im told.

dale@che
09-26-2010, 05:08 AM
the optis are suppose to be fixed in regards to the bangs but you cant believe everything your told

ive seen a lot of etecs with holes in there cases, but thats racing :)

Calis
09-26-2010, 05:19 AM
yeah everything can and will brake eventually is my opinion.

its been said the lightning (L2) gear case isnt as solid as the speedmaster.

dale@che
09-26-2010, 05:21 AM
damm right, biggest test coming up next weekend with the grafton B2B... 110km of hell..

Calis
09-26-2010, 05:37 AM
yeah grafton it can be heaven or hell.... i loved grafton one of my favorite races.

other thing to note about the 250ho is I've been told it is competing directly with the 300 sx opti.
the etec 250ho and 300 are the same 3.4cu motor just with different gear cases/ratios.
the opti 300 puts out 224 kw's and so does the etec 300 so i guess so does the 250ho.

dale@che
09-27-2010, 04:36 AM
300xs is a 3.2L motor

anyway we ordered a 250xs today with speedmaster gearbox, raceview dash etc etc..

Calis
09-27-2010, 05:17 AM
yah.... but I was meaning to say ... is the "ETEC 250ho and ETEC 300" are the same 3.4L motors..... :p

how long till delivery on the xs?

dale@che
09-27-2010, 05:24 AM
ah ok,

will know the delivery time in the morning, he thinks around 2-3 weeks but cant be sure till he checks stock..
