Tricks that old racers get up to after retirement

Well, it's after lunch and I had my nap and I'm back, all I have to do is try and remember what the hell it was I was going to tell you! Maybe it'll come back to me sometimes !

Is that right. Mercury brought out a 400 HP four cycle race motor weighing in at around 700 lbs!
Holy FECKIN schomoly how brilliant is that?.. ''Twas nearly fifty years back -----we pushed out the Cosworth ------you know what, guess what we had for propulsion------yup you guessed it

Seems mighty strides have been made in a sideways direction, just wait till you want to get it homologated, then the excreta will colide with the coffee grinder!

If you want to go racing-----do not come up with a winner-----the buggers will ban it under some pretext or other. You can race under the sportsmanship banner but dare to win and I guarantee they'll let the hounds loose, -------- maybe things have changed-------or it could just be me!

Think Ron has moved back to Seattle-----played golf with him a few times but we always went to the Seebolds for dinner------motor bikes never came up, but I'll ask Billy if knows of any bikes.

Yeah, well, sh-t happens--------fell asleep on the job last night!!! Metaphorically speaking that is!! Started on a post late last night, the lids drooped, woke up with a start and the I pad told me it was 1:30 am------no way was I going to ramble and reminisce at that time of night or morning.
Today was my turn to do the lunch------I'm just totally brilliant at making a Tasmanian Smoky Travaux Chowder ( and modest with it) a couple of hours from chopping and frying the smoked bacon to pouring in a slug of fresh double cream, but I promise you not one the celebrity chefs on TV could even begin to dream up a dish that could compare------if you're ever in the neighbourhood , drop in, Mine is the chowder Momma used to TRY to make. That's enough about me for today, let's get serious.

Wonder how many of you knew Garbrecht once tested tunnels at lake X?-----mind you, he made a bit of a pigs ear out of it---------from what we can make out it was Renato's twin engined "MISS TITTY" that he tried to fly!,,, Now you and I know that multi motored tunnels,( not even when the holy one is the pilot) not under any circumstances, fly for long distances without serious and very painful consequences-----as my sainted mother used to say "WHAT GOES UP, MUST EVENTUALLY COME DOWN"-------

Just one of the hundreds of titilating tales from the X FILES that shall be told during the forthcoming months.

Johno how many ( If any )of those jolly old, WANKELS are still in existence? Is there one still in workable condition? You know GARY, Mark and me clubbed resources and bought the original Mercury V6 ""Old blue"! Makes me wonder if there are enough bits left in the world that you could cobble a motor together !------

To answer your question, 3 that I know of for sure. 2 are in a private collector hands in Connecticut that are just as they came off the dyno in1976 and 1 is in BRP's Head accounts office in Wis. (I believe this one was on the Evinrude 100 anniversary tour) All the bits and pieces have long since been trashed. There is supposedly a bucket , shroud and gearcase in Fl. There were 3 others at one point in time several years back at BRP before they closed the Waukegan Engineering building., but I don't know if they still exist. Seems to me Lars said the BRP stylists like the look so much they took one back to their headquarters to style the new E-Tech.

That is so very sad Johno, We only have " Hindsight" why the hell weren't we gifted with " Foresiight"-------guess history is going to be remembered by the likes of me and thee------so how reliable is that going to be----------two totally "Unbiased " individuals?

If I remember correctly, John had actually made some arrangements to bring the BRP rotary to OFF for display a couple of years ago. GEICO team was in the area for a race and would do the transport. It was going well until BRP management shut it down. John - Correct me if I got that wrong. - Steve Sirois

The "short sights" for reading are probably a good idea. Don't think the Lake X files would have Garbrecht running Miss Titti.

Everybody in European powerboat racing new Julie she was a character and she new all the scandal that went with it. I first met her in 1968 she made all her own clothes` she became good friends with Bill Shakespeare and after Jeremy James fatal accident persuaded Bill to speak to Dave and Butch to take her boyfriend Jeff as their replacement racing driver` driving their 1000SBP racing boat. In 1972 after Bill Shakespeares fatal accident all his OMC racing engines went to Dave and Butches racing team Marine sales Taunton so Jeff now moved up to the ON class 99cu and I joined them in 1972. Julie new somebody that worked for Yardley Cosmetics and tried to get them on board as a sponsor loads of the usual promises we had a boat painted in Yardley colours and it raced at the Cardiff Docks race in 1975.After the race Colin Chapman from Lotus cars came to the team and said have Yardley paid any money yet and he said don`t hold your breath its not very likely they will.In 1975 I went to race for OMC Brugge and Julie pestered Garbrecht to give the team and Jeff a T3 Mercury engine in 1976.What a persuasive woman she was and Jeff later got a new Hodges outfit with a 2.4 Merc OZ engine`i kept in touch with both Jeff and Julie up to 1980 and a few years later they had a son named William I think he visits these posts sometimes. And to top this they both ran a marine business in the 80s`that should bring you up to date Jackie.

Julie was always a going concern, all red bloodied drivers had the hots for her. Good looking , blonde,,and a body that did her no harm at all ------a Liverpool accent known the world over and of course the immortal phrase delivered to Jeff Edwards from the tent at the 24 hrs race at Chasewater.
I never knew Jeff and Juie got married and had a boy, then ran a marine business-----kinda poetic don't you think.

As I recall, the twin Miss Titti was late arriving in the states. Except for cable steering, it had to be completely rigged. Jerry Kohnke and I stayed in Oshkosh waiting for the boat while the rest of the team headed for Havasu. We, along with Georgio & Renato completed a quick rig job and the boat was taken directly to the desert ..... this was Havasu 1969.

Renato blew it over testing and it was brought back to Oshkosh for repairs. It was repainted red and taken back out to the desert for Parker, 1970. This time Bill Sirois was the driver. After that race it was sold to Bob Massey. He flipped testing it at Elsinore and, sadly, did not recover from his injuries. That was also the end for that boat. The Miss Titti never had time to make it to the Lake.

Bill Steele had invited Don Ross and myself to come to Oshkosh in 1969 where there would be a rig already prepared, ready to do the Havasu race, The only thing we got was a citation and four hours in the pokey-------Renato was having a dicky fit-----he was a passenger in the back seat fast asleep.
Seemed to me Miss Titty was Flipped on more than one occasion and was one of the mitigating circumstances which led me to believe it could be the one GG flipped at lake X. Of course, I was not privy to the classified information which you imparted-----like I told you, there was no named boat on the test sheets, just twin engined Molinari ! Mark is sending a photo copy of the sheet

Hey Jackie I never said they got married but I was told that she ran the business like( imagine how Alfi Bullen ran his his business that's how best I can describe how she ran hers she had loads of run ins with Merc SWMF importers if John Buck was still around he could fill you in` I was told she nearly sent him mental and the last I heard was she was importing Jet Skis from Europe in the early 90s as well as other things ).

May just pull it down OFF'N the shelf-------resurrect it-----might even get to finish it-----never was any good at model making, may need some help here, whaddya think --------worth doing or not?

Remember it was a good kit, all metal, detailed engine, all chrome, flexi exhausts etc still have the original tubs of red and black Humbroll paint.

Jackie---you should do it---and also being born in 1931---I should take my own advice. 1952 I nearly finished 'Sinbad the Sailor, six foot wingspan--it has survived several major moves, always thought I would finish it when I retired---- and is hanging today in my shop----62 years later--'procrastination' should be a single syllable word----

Rory Mc Ilroy did an interview in the Daily Telegraph today!
Now he is one of the contenders for SPOTY(sports personality of the year).
Whilst I agree he has earned the right to be nominated, the reason he should win it he claims is -----------it would bring back the millions of missing golfers. which is total bollocks.

Golf shot itself in the foot with its antiquated rules and holier than thou attitude, it's been stuck in the mud for far too long.
A few simple changes which would speed things up and bring the missing golfers back, make novices and old folk feel better about their prowess with the clubs would be a good start.

Courses and clubs have a high handed opinion of themselves --------too expensive by far for starters.
Most slow play stems from the inability to " putt--out"------- give 'em a 9" cup------watch those times come down.

Nobody ever will ask me------but I could fix a lot of golfs problems with a modicum of common sense
anyway this is a boating site----nothing at all to do with golf------so I apologise.

Done a lot of rambling this week-------cracked the odd joke because it made me laugh, not to fill up a space, I try not to offend people which is different to upsetting folk by disagreement which I can do without really trying.

Three months later, this boat was again on the Colorado River. A lot had happened in three months. Mr. K. was gone. Billy Steele was gone. Richie and Ralph had moved to Oshkosh. Odell would soon leave the Lake. Gary was in Charge. I arrived a couple days early, the boat had not been tested, I recall Gary wearing a Lifeline----

Gary once told me he had flipped a MOLINARI but I must confess, I didn't really believe him, maybe that's because I never saw him even sit in a race boat.
Must confess, it was only speculation on my part that it might have been Miss Titty GG was testing.

I never Realized just how much effort went on and how many rigs were tested , and how many of the personel I actually knew from the lake, Mark reckons there are a bunch of records missing, but we still have fourteen of them. They are in safe hands Gene, GARY and Mark will be great custodians.

Some years ago I saw one of the original open cockpit Molinari's in Tom Wenstadt's garage in Oshkosh. He was a Merc engineer before joining a boat company. He said that it was one of the first two that came to Wisconsin and GG had flipped the other one..... These were single engine hulls and very early designs. I don't know how Tom wound up with the hull, but he had it in the mid 80's.

If you are talking about the two page spread sheet boat test records - I've got 16 of them - all Switzer Wing tests - from 1966-1968. Not originals - just copies. A dumpster dive collection - they would be long gone otherwise.

I rode in that one with Tom - that thing would really handle rough water - he took it down to Grass Lake IL later on and blew it over - boat was trashed if I remember right.

Don't get your hopes up Gramps, the sight of Garbrecht wearing a Lifeline at Parker 1970 does not put him in Miss Titti at Lake X. I repeat, Titti comes from Tavernola to Oshkosh, gets rigged for the first time and goes directly to Havasu. Gets wet for the first time, real wet! Broken, Miss Titti goes back to Oshkosh. Gets repaired, repainted and rerigged. Goes directly to Parker and Sirois has it in the lead somewhere around the five hour mark. Has a mechanical failure and is put on the trailer. Boat is sold to Bob Massy and goes to Bellflower, California. Never does this Miss Titti grace the waters of Lake X. :nonod:

The only Miss Titti that did was a 16' sprint. Renato painted it the same color as this twin. On his first day of testing at the Lake had the same result ..... blew it over! Not that a blowover is ever funny, but his was a bit comical. He wanted nothing to do with the idea of swimming with those alligators. He managed to get himself perched on the nose of the boat sticking out of the water and kept a ever watchful eye for an intruder as he waited for the safety boat to pick him up. I'm not sure if he even got wet!

I don't think he ever painted a boat green for himself again. :D

Willa...I recall a lunch at Oshkosh sitting next to GG while a bunch of guys (including YOU I think) were playing cards. I asked Gary if he ever tested any of the boats.
