What I was trying to tell you Pilgrim——- two of my grandsons brought this about——-?.?With a little help from my son !
Boats are all new——- Carbon——- .light years ahead of ANYBODY else in the Marine industry !
But all very low profile stuff.
Buggered if Jilly didn’t manage to pick another huge bunch of sweet peas yesterday———- Definitely the last, as the plants are being torn out this week.
Roses have all had another lease of life and are magnificent.
We have wall to wall sunshine again today—— great for this time of year, even though they’re not sunbathing Temperatures.
Five Hours in the shop yesterday, thought up a good idea for the mount for the latest concept—— had to do it while it was fresh in my mind. Might give you a sneaky peak if it works out.
I got talked into buying a new carbon steel band saw blade—— cost exactly twice as much as the one I had previously been using. Result———— it has lasted at least three times as long as the old one and is still sharp and running true——— I can recommend them if your cutting aluminium of various thickness 3—25 mm.
Two day’s to finish the project and clean up the shop——-then Madam has decided we’re off down to Salcombe in Devon for a long weekend break. Says I need a break from the shop———- funny the excuses the other halves can conjure up when they want something?
Attachment 419094Attachment 419095Attachment 419096
There’s the mount i was I was telling you about——— concept is coming along ok—— at a bit of an impasse.
Do I stick a gearcase and prop on it——— put the rest of the steering in/——or just say “Bollocks”- that’s it.
Or start afresh and do one that’s a bit closer to the original ?
Yes, after the first two—— the third one should be a cake walk!
If you make a new one, you also have to decide if it should be a two pipe exhaust, as was used to set the record, or the single pipe that was shown in all the ads ..... decisions, decisions.
Attachment 419102
I know- I know William, Problem is——if I have to make a decision——- it’s usually the wrong one as you well know !
I-have never seen the twin pipe version———-Post-a piccie and il’ll make one that can be added as an alternative !
I just painted the cowl black—— seemed the decent thing to ———- the five point star on the base I did in red just to break the monotony!
Padded a steering wheel—— see if it needs a “dead mans” !
Tell you now Bill—it’s my last trip to Tavares, ——would love to see you there——- so would most of the old farts who turn up. Stickle tells me he tries every year to get you to Tavares?
Jackie, the one I posted is the only one I have ...... from Powerboat. You'll probably have to get out the magnifiers to see both pipes in this pic, but they are there. :o
Attachment 419117
Good Job I’ve got one hell of an imagination Bill——— it’s a crap photo—— from the wrong side——- pipes are covered in spray——- in black and white—— blurred and time faded——- but apart from that!!!!!!!
Ill do something with it ?
Did it really run with the motor tucked in so far, or was the snapshot taken at one of those”Lets see if this works” moments!
Stacks are different on this last one.
. Bob, I’d say those were MEGA’S——— two pipes taken from a stacker !
Damned if that motor still looks well tucked in to me——— maybe that’s the way it was supposed to run!
piccy gives me a lot clearer picture of the proportions——- I got those well wrong!
Will have to do another one——— see if I can get it right this time!
Will put another pipe on this one before I stitch it all back together——— it will have a bit more “Panache” this time, what with the black and red to help.
Still think it’s a neat mount for grown ups—— not for kids!
Anyway, it’s my last day in the shop——— crack-o-sparrow Thursday, we head off to Devon for our autumn break!
Willa, the picture you posted ? We’re the two pipes MEGA or straight !?
Cos I have to tell you—— they look straight to me.
I may be a tad dopey—- but the peepers are still in good shape ! Nah!- Nan- A - Nah! Nah!
Attachment 419191Attachment 419192
Well. Whatdya think Willa ? ——— I know it’s still not the dogs cajones, but it does have a bit of style now———- was never meant to be anything but a “CONCEPT”
You’ll just have to wait until I build the next one——— you never did say whether they were straight pipes or meggas——— So you got a couple of straights.
Attachment 419199
Jackie - As I remember, during the actual record setting attempt, the engine had two straight pipes. However, Willabee is the one that knows best. In the picture, the engine has two of the standard megaphone style stacker pipes on it. Perhaps the original record setting engine was removed and what is there is just a mock-up. Believe it or not, I found this picture on The Duck Hunter's Refuge website and it was posted by 1995 US1. He also posted some commentary which I did not originally post, but think now that I should. Here it is:
Courtesy of 1995 US1:
"I shot this pic a few years ago visiting with the guy that built and tweaked my race props. This was his dads' boat. His father built the boat, built the motor, built the propeller to set the World Speed Record at that time. Now, imagine kneeling in the front of this thing at that speed, no belts, no seat, on your knees, butt up and head down. His father died about 20 years ago working on the Mercury F1 testing program. Stuffed a boat and was killed instantly, what a man. I am close friends with all of Jims' boys, we hunt and fish together every chance we get. I'm not sure even they know of their dads' impact on the outboard racing world. It still sits exactly as in the photo. It is in the "attic" at Merten Marine in Oshkosh, Wi. The boys do not touch it, they only show it to very close friends. It is a bit like a shrine to their father, it was "his" piece. I feel blessed to have been allowed to see it, touch it, feel it. I wanted to pull the cowling off that thing in the worst way and see what magic Jim Sr. did with that engine back in 73. That guy was one of the founders of Mercury Hi Perf....... His sons are not slouches when it comes to boat racing either. Jim Jr. is the best prop man in the country. He was my secret weapon during my racing career. His knowledge of racing props made up for my lack of driving ability."
Didn't know you were in a hurry. Ya got to give a guy a chance to sleep before he responds!
It set the record running two straight pipes. They were parallel to each other, about half the length of yours with more separation at the elbows. It did run 'tucked' as the photo shows.
When the boat was made ready for display, there was no powerhead, just an empty block and cowling. I think Mike Butler hung the stacker pipes on it so he could put it on display during an aircraft show. At the time, Mike was storing it in his hangar.
The boat is a Ron Jones hydro. It was an older boat that had been returned from competition and put in dry storage at Mercury Racing.Mert had some changes made on the transom, the work was done by Carl Stippich and Jack Ferris. The powerhead used to set the record was one of two built at Plant 6 by Dick Lanphere's group. A TII with special porting and pistons. The exhaust systems, both single pipe and twin pipe, originally came from Ted Morgan's work on the early C6. I kept them at Racing and put them on a powerhead we built at Racing for this attempt. Our powerhead fell a little short of the speed Mercury wanted to attain, so Lanphere's guys borrowed them and tried them on their powerhead. Most of the PR pictures were taken when Mert was testing the powerhead from Racing and the single pipe exhaust. I doubt Merc's PR guys even knew the powerhead and pipe change had been made, that's why almost all the announcements you see about setting the record show the single pipe exhaust system. I'm not positive, but I think Bob Hetzel was brought in to do the prop work.
Jackie...If you have time (ie find the time!) to motor the "big L" back a couple of miles back from Salcombe to Slapton Sands....Bring your camera and take some snaps.... read the information boards....I won't give the game away because I'm sure you will give it some script when you are back.
If it doesn't bring a tear to your eye you have no soul...................
That was a lovely message Bob—- thanks!
Have to tell you though, my son Mark spent ten years apprenticeship at ROLLA PROPELLORS LUGANO SWITZERLAND. ——- Did props for Billy Mike and Timmy——— Does mainly the bigger wheels now for very expensive boats, reckons it pays better !! So as only a proud father can——- I tell you he’s among the top five prop men in the world.
Willa—— pipes can be straightened a tad——- just a simple three mill nut and bolt, but I would have to make a new surround if you want the pipes spaced a little more. Would be easier to make a couple of new pipes than cut those down.
Anyway—— like I said——- it’s only a FECKIN Concept—— I don’t do scale models, mainly because I don’t know how.
Every school I ever attended always gave me the same end of term report——- “COULD DO BETTER”—— MUST TRY HARDER———— that’s why I do concepts, nobody gives a flying fart!
Now I’ve got the general idea——the next one will be fit to show Merts kids.
I have enough information to cobble something together that will fit the bill.
Shops all closed down—— left it like the bottom of a baby’s pram—- couldn’t be arsed to clean it up——— I’m slap dad bang in the middle of a couple of projects that have been put on hold for four days!
I only mentioned those 'other' facts about the pipes so that I didn't give you another opportunity to jump on my case for not saying something soon enough. You're one hundred percent correct, it's a concept, so who would care if the pipes were forty-seven feet longer than the boat and one of them is obviously about to fail ?
Ok, enough of that ..... your 'concept' looks pretty damn good to me. I know enough about Mert's sons to say that they will be pleased by the thought itself. Time for you and yours to go and enjoy the next four days.
PS: I've enjoyed a couple of rum & cokes at Judy's Gin Mill tonight. Consequently I respectively reserve the right to edit or delete this post when I wake up tomorrow afternoon.
Willa, do you keep seeing the snap with Stickle, Mert, Morgan Cubes and La Morte sitting on the stools around the bar at Judy’s Gin Mill ( at least, I think it’s Judys). Every so often it pops up.
I remember sitting in that same spot with Garbrecht- Pruett, You, Cubes, Biers, -Bill Allen, Mert and a couple of others, we pulled licences to see who was the oldest——— I pretended I couldn’t find mine———- I knew damn well which of us would be senior!
From memory, there was some “Raunchy” happenings at Judy’s—— Leo B. Was a bit gobsmacked——— he took me there a few times after that—— ( just to be sure).
Nice to know, it’s still up and running after all these years—- and you still favour RUM AND COKE.
P.S. there is no way one of the pipes could possibly fall off—— each one is tapped and threaded, with a three mill bolt at the centre, and a s/s nut inside the wrap around. N.n.n.n.n.?
Attachment 419330Attachment 419331
Now, if you walked into a swanky hotel —— miles off the beaten track——- and you’d never been there before—————- first thing you see is this life sized bust of ????——- can’t quite put my finger on where I’ve seen him before!
Every time I walk past he’s looking straight at me——-frightens the crap out of me !
Roger——— remind you of anybody?——- Doreen, help please?
Attachment 419333View from the the window at SOUTH SANDS SALCOMBE—— low tide.
Oh well, don’t look like anyone’s coming out to play on “Tricks” today——- it’s clouded over and the temperature dropped significantly. Frankly my dear!!!!
Theres a local “artisan” who’s good with a Welder———- has a touch of imagination—— I say that, as he’s asking £70 for a four inch tin frog and £800 for a two foot peacock made out of old knife, forks and spoons—— in less than a day!! All his stuff is on display in the hotel foyer!
Catching the ferry into Salcombe this morning——- plan on staying there all day, having lunch out and packing a picnic for this evening.
Attachment 419381
Thats the ferry ——- it trundles out into deep water———- docks the ferry boat——-transfers the passengers——- backs out again!?
you wouldhave thought it was easier to build a pier! But this is rural Devon !
Right, time to see if they can rustle up a half decent “English” breakfast!
Never did get a full English breakfast——- did have the best eggs benedict since Ceasers Palace 1970—
Caught the funny ferry to Salcombe——- bit of a let down really——- Rag and stick craft and an abundance of “blow ups”——hundreds of the poxy things !all designer shops and stupidly priced boutiques, selling all the useless things you never wanted in the first place—— Fatface—-White Stuff —Joules—-Helly Hansen etc, you name it, they’re all here. A poor mans ALDBURGH really!
Tried to find a decent place for lunch—— failed miserably—— there is no such animal in Salcombe!.
Found a crab shack in the next cove called Giggling Prawn ? —- Great lunch at a reasonable price .
Had a look in the real estate window——- prices start around the mill and a half, all the way up to eleven million????
Damn place is more expensive than Martha’s Vineyard or Cape Cod ?
Taking a trip to Dartmouth today——— will look in on Slapton Sands on the way back—— not just to please Phill—— mainly because of a duty of care I suppose !
Throughout history there have been huge cock ups, which have been hailed as Great Victories ! Or “HONOURABLE DEFEATS” ———- Look no further than Agincourt—-Rourkes Drift—-Waterloo—- Trafalgar—— Little Big Horn—-American Civil War—- Dunkirk—— Stalingrad to mention just a few!
Then there’s Slapton Sands ?——- nearly a thousand US personnel lost their lives ——- mainly due to cock ups by senior ranking officials. Incident was kept quiet until well after the end of WW2,—— but it
was simply lack of communication between the top brass——- another case of gross incompetence and lack of common sense!
Afraid I’m not qualified to pass judgment——- this is just IMHO——. (In my humble opinion) !!
Both the first and second world wars were run by wealthy politicians who went to Oxbridge, Eton Harrow and Sandhurst!
None of them had the one thing needed to fight a war—— common sense!
In both wars the Americans intervened——- ordinary men —— just like the English and commonwealth troops. Then the top brass came in—— commanders. Who went to Yale, Harvard, Stanford and WestPoint. ——— they didn’t bring much common sense in either!
Everybody wanted to be top dog——-Churchill— Stalin- Roosevelt—- Eisenhower—Montgomery—- DeGaulle (who spent the war in an underground bunker in London)
Get back to you after the trip to Slapton——- time for two of the threeSSSS.
[QUOTE=jackiewilson;3079391]Attachment 419330Attachment 419331
Rich Luhers ?
Slaptom Sands——continuation —-
Visited Torcross and Slapton Sands this morning——- fine, dry sunny,—— so why did I come away feeling sad, gloomy and depressed?
Not a lot to show that nearly 900 Americans were “lost” while on a training exercise prior to the Normandy D-Day landings on Utah beach.
Theres a rusty tank in Torcross———- also what looks to be a huge memorial platform! I don’t have any idea what it is —- or will be in the future. But I’m sure it will be easy to find out on the google site.
Now where we’re we?—-ah yes, WW2 and it’s leaders——- Pettain was a First World War One veteran who was in charge of a country that was overrun by nazis ——- who were putting villagers up and down the country to the firing squads——- he was pleading for their lives via diplomatic channels, but of course the Germans just laughed at his efforts. Meanwhile De Gaulle was safely hiding away in England waiting to jump to the head of the victory procession into Paris and claim he was a hero?
Rest of the tale is history——- you can look it all up on the dot-dot.
American President Roosevelt didn’t want to enter the war——- but his economic advisers reminded him that the country was still in depression—— a war would get industry moving and the economy would grow,.
England had an empire and was good for 192 billion it owed the USA at the end of the war!
It took the best part of two decades before the bill was finally settled!
Rationing did not end in Britain unti 1953—- eight years after the war finished.
But what price tag can you put on the thousands of U.S. servicemen that lost their lives in the conflict?
Like I said at the start——- this is purely my point of view——-Ordinary man in the street has no say in the matter——- politicians pull the strings——- they don’t fight the battles.
Officers and gentlemen learned how to fight a war from books they read at university——- the commodity they All lacked was “common sense”.
What has all this got to do with the cost of a loaf of bread at the bakery today——- France in particular — Germany and a few others have very short and selective memories!
Britain is a democracy and held a referendum to leave the EU—— we voted to leave—— not by much—- but the margin does not matter——- the vote must be honoured. Or democracy loses its way.
Next time Europe loses its way and the Russkies or the Chinks start throwing ballistic nuclear crap at them———— who do think they’ll come running to, to bail them out again? You guessed it——— Good ole USA and G.B.
Maybe we should start charging France and Germany some of what WW2 cost us, instead of them threatening us with dire consequences should we not have an easy Brexit.
Enough of all this ——- promise not to mention it again.
Back home again tomorrow when I can start churning out a few more items of “ tricks that retired old racers get up to” again.
All of you out there, please bear in mind, the Above comments are my own—— no one else’s!
2006 was last payment for the lend lease program for the brits
Dartmouth——- different kettle of fish altogether. Nowhere near as yuppified and pretentious as SALCOMBE. Plenty of places to eat, lots of history, beautiful setting right on the river Dart and house prices more realistic.
Any colonials thinking of visiting south west England would do well to visit Dartmouth, it takes a lot of beating!
Last night down this neck of the woods—— off home tomorrow—— back to the shop and sanity and reality.
...I think you might be on to somethin' Jackie...;)https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...0&d=1538073213
I knew damn well he reminded me of someone—- just couldn’t nail who it was—— I just needed a nudge and all becomes clear!
Ready to hit the road for home——- four days away suits me fine.
Been thinking all night long ‘bout which direction I’m headed once I get back home—— still tend to favour boats, but I’ve come across some interesting concepts ——- from frogs and birds to coffee tables and ridiculous.
come to the conclusion—— I’m better than some—-not as bad as I first thought—— but need to be less conservative—— grab the bull by the nuts — so to speak. Or was it horns?
See Europe got a 10-6 lead in the Ryder cup match——- but , there’s always a sting in the tail somewhere.
Would have loved to see Phil and Tiger come into form and spank some of the newbies—— maybe it’s not too late——- let’s see what today brings,
Many a slip—— between cup and lip!
Attachment 419518
Damn—— who DOES that remind me of????
