Just by fluke, I had the miss-fortune of hitting something with my skeg the last time out. So I thought I’d take the opportunity to shape it the way I thought the water should flow over the thing. So I created an arc to produce a low pressure on the left side.
This is what it looked like.

Did you notice any handling changes with the modified skeg?
RotorHead
06-08-2004, 10:12 AM
Yes. Less torque steer (at the height I’m used to running it) and an unusually high water pressure. Up in the vicinity of 20psi. I’m not sure if that’s a result of the gear case now going straighter in the water and the ram effect of the water pushing the pressure way high. I don’t know it that’s good or bad.???

RT if your boat will do 90 with a 300 promax what would you guess at with a 300x? The x has about 35-40 more hp, is that right? Do you think 93-95 or even more? I really like these 21 V's more and more. In an old post you said that pre 1988 charger 18DL are like a mini challenger. What do you think one of those boats would do with a strong 2.5? Would it be drivable?
Firestarter
06-08-2004, 11:06 AM
My boat is down at 87 mph right now, warmer air and water. I think I would run right at 90-2 with a 300X.
Trust me, these boats ROCK, and are much more fun on the lake than an STV.
Yes a DL is a mini Challenger. With a 2.5 you will get 90's. It will not like rough water. To find a GOOD DL is gonna be hard....... but I might know of one..... an old race boat.
BTW an ET will put that Tuff 21 over 100 mph...... and the cool part is that it is not a flyweight boat... this is FULL weight.

that is what I was thinking, is that one of these v hulls would be much more fun up here than an stv. I was out all weekend in a 18 classic and was thinking if I were in a stv I would be getting smoked. Do you think the 18DL would still not handled the rough stuff very well? What is the story on the charger that you have a line on. I would like to get something that needs work, I have as much fun working on this stuff as I do running it, plus I have a new boat in the water that I will use all summer. I really just want to build up a boat that will go over 90 and still run 60's on the bad days out there.

The DL will be ok, and ya it will need some work. It could easily be made to dance.
It will be OK with big power in the rough water..... not the larger swells.

Hey Reese, there was a thread a while back about 100mph sob or something and I thought I asked about it. Some of these hulls have little pads and some don't. The only answer I got was 'good driving'. I was told my 17' vee checkmate for example, would require a pad to be driveable over 60mph. Maybe they get some air lift that helps? Maybe this larger size hull has enough mass to slow the oscillations/chine..

OK Boys. You guys can¡¦t possibly imagine how much trouble and frustration I had to go through to answer this post. I¡¦m writing this to you from Mumbay (Bombay) India. Nothing works in this country. At the risk of offending some ones heritage (not intended), my lord this is by far the worst place I¡¦ve ever worked. And I¡¦ve worked in some real ****holes. I¡¦ll try to post some photos if I can get the computer to stay on line long enough.
First, let me congratulate Herb. That is a spectacular number. Not to take away from his thunder, but I finally finally weighed my boat. Simply lifted off the trailer the way it runs every day, everything in including 20 galUs. fuel, it weighed in at 2188lbs. Now, again I¡¦m not trying to be a smart about this its simply a fair question. How much does the Intimidator weigh. Just lifted off the trailer in the state it ran those impressive numbers. This interests me from a hobby boat builders technical prospective. Cause we have heard some wild numbers up here. ¡K Several 900lbs. comments, one even as low as 700lbs. These numbers must be bare hull only, or just plain wrong. Herb, kindly verify or correct these myths.
Finally Herb, I¡¦d love to pick up that gauntlet you¡¦ve laid down and run with it. Unfortunately I¡¦m in this hell hole till the end of July. But I¡¦ll tell ya¡¦ what, if I don¡¦t die of Malaria or Montezuma¡¦s revenge, I¡¦ll make every effort to come to an event in your neck of the woods in August. Let me know if there are any. I would love to show you what we¡¦ve got. By then I¡¦ll be good and starved for all the boating I can get.
All the best

whats powering that tuff 21? and whats powering the intimidator?
Firestarter
06-14-2004, 02:01 PM
The Tuff price is around 21k us at todays exchange rate. DO not take that as SOLID, as I have nothing to do with the company.
The Tuff is also a 100% balsa boat, deck sides, bottom. It is ALL vacuum bagged, it is ALL bi and tri axel glass. It is all Vinylester resin, it has PPG gel. NOTHING but the best go into this boat. In my opinion, the only competition it has is the Progression.
With all due respect to the Intimidator, as it is very fast they are not in the same league. The Tuff boat pound for pound is the fastest SOB, and with a simple prop change will crack 100 mph, in a boat that can be RACED OFFSHORE in real conditions for years and never come apart.
Sorry for my rant, but should you want to compare the two boats based on price, you are not making a fair comparison.
RT........ BTW, it is also runnng these speeds in fresh water and at 1200 feet of altitude.

Since the Tuff 21' is basically a 21 Superboat. If the cockpit dimensions are the same, we have a mold for the coolest rear cockpit cover. I'll take some pics. I'm sure John Coen will part with the mold since we updated our 21'and no longer make that model. I'll try to take some pics of the mold on Monday, and post them that night.
I still love those 21's.
I'm pretty sure Joey Impresia at East Coast Marine on the Island has a 21'Superboat doing over a hundred.

Rob, how did you arrive at this conclusion? How much do you know about the Intimidator's construction? Did you ever even see one in person? I do not want to come off as harsh, and yes, the Tuff is a very nice boat, but your conclusions are based on pure supposition. I rode in Herb's Intimidator 21 all week through some VERY nasty water at over 85+ and I was very impressed. Herb doesn't give that boat a chance to relax - anyone at the Romp will agree with that. Also, the build quality of the Intimidator is impressive.
Herb is also the only person to run over 94 MPH with a factory stock 250. This is a fact. Nobody else is even close to that.
I'm not looking to debate this issue, but you have no experience with the Intimidator (or a Progression 22), so how could you draw these conclusions? Herb has run over 105 mph with a 300X and John G. ran over 101 mph with his Progression 22/300X. This was before anyone even thought 100 mph was even possible with a 21-22" deep V-bottom, single outboard.
Greg

I have heard all about the intimidator. Nothing but positive.
There is no question the boat is light, there is no question it is very fast ( BTW, that stock 250 is almost as powerful as an old style 300 Promax, and in some spots more so ). The fact is the Tuff is built EXACTLY like the Progression, only because of default, as there is no better way to build a boat. All this arose, because people were questioning the price difference between the 2 boats. Fact is you can hardly buy the materials to build a Progression or a Tuff for what the other sells for.
Mark form Tuff told me that the Intimidator is a real runner, and looks great.

06-21-2004, 12:04 PM
Rob - agreed on the 250. It has a more broad torque curve than a 300 Pro Max, but it doesn't make the same power up top - close though, yes. The 250 is a powerful outboard for sure. Also, there is a Progression out on the Island here in the Hamptons running a stock Pro Max 300 (not a 300X) at 94 MPH, turning a Mazco RE-4.
What impresses me even more is that Herb was on the rev limiter with the 250 at 94 mph. That suggests that there might be more to be had from his setup.
Greg:)

I think a dork monster might be a dork master when typed with rage. My brother is very sensitive about his paint job and he don't need no chit from a bow "wire" sporting baby blue stripe having, boring lame ol Superboat.

If your motor is truly 250 hp your boat will not break 70. Two things I know for sure...I don't weigh 2450 and I got waaaaaayy more HP than you do.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out he doesn't have a chance. The best part is I will do it with a 22....let him go by and then nail it...that should look really cool at the long beach in CT.

Liqui-Fly

I don't like arguing with crazy people. Your name is Progression 22....your avatar has a 22 Progression....now all of a sudden you're trying to spare yourself grave embarassment by getting something else. Now it's about rough water....hey dude you dream up any scenerio you need to so that maybe.....just maybe you'll come out on top. My guess is that you really think you have something special. That's great. The thing out don't get is how a company that brags about their process can get a boat to weigh 2500 lbs. Maybe it has a sweet lead keel like a Pearson or something like that. Could just be the oil injection tank too I guess. Either way, you keep changing your story so it really doesn't matter. In a way you've already admitted defeat.

Not to stir the sh!t but insn't a Progression still a balsa core boat also. Don't get me wrong, I think using endgrain balsa(vacuum bagged or not) is fine but to imply that "my wood boat is great and your wooden, wet bag of crap sucks" is sort of mis-guided. In my opinion they are all in the same category.

Progression22,
I know in the grand scheme of things the guy with the most resources will come out on top. That being said, just because a guy sinks 80K into his boat doesn't mean he will win a drag race or be the fastest. There are a bunch of $100k boats on the lakes around here and only about 1% could beat me in a drag race or in top end. And on the other end of the spectrum, a guy with a used stv and an old 260(properly set up) would lay waste to my allison grand sport.

I'm gonna buy this and I'm getting that if I sell this if not I'm gonna and do this and that and the other thing.
When it all boils down what you do or don't do is gonna depend on what you're Daddy decides. So why don't you just zip it and spare us all your pipe dreams. When you actually DO something you let us know what you DID and not what you think you're gonna do.

The children are so onvious to spot. They've never been anywhere or done anything but when they're ready, adults are supposed to drop everything and run right down and race them. Blaahahahahahahaha...I mean what are you 2?

Are you that stupid that you think that X will be running by the weekend. You got break in time son and lots of it unless of course it's used well then you'll find that anyone who knows anything, knows that nobody sells motors that are good. So maybe you should get that thing on the water first. Find out that you haven't gained a thing and then decise who you want to call out. What do you think you're picking up 20 mph or something? Hello.

You need a few bucks or something...sorry man I don't gamble cause I'm too good to take money from stupid people and always pay when a debt is owed so it's a lose lose situation for me. Sticking it in your face from now to eternity is enough for me. We gonna drag race, flying mile, to Hartford and back or what?

Hey Progression and Fly,
Just for the record...how fast are your boats? What has been both of your top speeds?

I really have no idea what you just said but I thought this was a speed arguement. Now all of a sudden it's an ocean adventure. Seems to me you are inserting the ol foot in de ol mouth to me.
Skywagon I honeslty do not know. I should be in the mid 90's atleast but I made a lot of changes this winter. On top of that...programming a fuel curve on a system I've never used before. We shall have to wait and see. The boat ran 85 last year with a 260....I have around 320 this year.
