View Full Version : Confused about my Jets and other stuff

so in order to NOT confuse myself. I'm going to ask a few rookie questions. But before I do. Just a few things about my engine.
Its clearly an evinrude xp body. There is a stamp down by the hydraulics that says MOD. No. E200STLCCM SER. No. G 1742421. BUT... The little frost plug thing on the block says J200STLCUA followed by G7457733. So one says XP200 and the other one mean 200GT? Or maybe the XP's had J motors, I don't know do you? The lower unit also has side doors that come off to allow more exhaust to exit the lower unit. The motor sounds like a built big block, It will hit 8k on the water with ease. I'm afraid to go higher but it sure wants too and I have it mounted to my 88 Stratos 200 VT Rocket. I don't know what the top end is yet. Its jack plated, land and Sea nose cone, foot throttle and a 26 pitch raker H.O. Prop. Oh yeah forgot to mention that the VRO is disconnected.

So about Jets. I keep seeing people posting numbers with three jet sizes. My carbs only have two jets. What am I missing? To confuse me even more my top jet is a 39 and my bottom jet is a 35, should the top one be bigger than the bottom one? How come everyone else is pushing jets in the 60's and 70's. All my carbs are jetted the same. Why would my jets be so small but yet my motor hauls asky. Where is this 3rd jet everyone talks about. Low, Mid and High. I only have two. Also I just got done ultrasonic cleaning my carbs and throttle bodies and changing out the fuel lines, looking pretty in there.

Ok, so those skinny little fuel lines that go next to the carbs but not to the carbs. The middle one on the steering wheel side has a factory weird looking metal pin/plug to it but all the other 5 have those tiny hoses. There is also a rubber nipple plug on the intake right between all the carbs. Maybe that was for VRO, I don't know.

The number on the clamp bracket is for an 88 3 liter while the one on the block is for an 87 2.7 liter. Heads are from an 87 while ignition is 88. The carbs do have 3 jets your photos show the idle and mid, the high end jet is behind the plug in the float bowl. I would check your tach as it needs to be a highly modified engine to turn 8k and with the jets in the photo I would say it is not, sounds like the tach is set wrong. I also would not turn that stock flywheel that high as I have seen them come apart. The engine also has a rev limiter at 6700 unless it has been disconnected. When you get the high end jet out we can tell if its had much internal work done. Is the baffel still in the air box? if not sure post a photo.

carbs are back on the engine, I'll have to check those jets later. I didn't really see any plugs in the float bowl. The only thing I believe I didn't remove was the screw in needle/seat unless your saying its down there somewhere.
But there are no baffles in the air box and there is a long series of 3/4" holes drilled down both edges. I'll post a photo when daylight comes.
My interest about the jets is because i keep seeing 60's and 70's and I have 30's as you can see.

High end jet is behind the brass plug in front of float bowl. 70's jets are high end fuel jets, your pic is air jets. If you are going to work on this I would get a factory manual.

Here is what my air box looks like. So also I have seen this airbag with three long rectangles on each side instead of a series of holes. Would that be a Johnson thing? I have no idea what airbag this is. I just use it. Could it be better?

That is a stock air box.

So this box isn't gutted, its totally stock except the holes drilled down the sides? What does a gutted air box look like, does anyone have any photos of what a gutted air box looks like?

Holes down the side are stock. I would look into getting a factory manual.

You have the potting coming out of the stator on another thread, or is that someone else?

Be careful, a few dollars saved now could be a lot of trouble later.

No thats me too. Just trying to keep issues separated in case one is resolved.
