Byron bay new years is REAL different the last few years, it used to be awesome, but as with most things here, the people who know best are killing it. Not sure what they have planned this year, i think i will be up your way this year!!! Seems the only way to be welcome in byron these days is if you rock up in a wicked camper!!!!!
Or maybe i'm just getting older:eek::eek:

Btw, we're selling our 250efi merc that was originally on the boat. Could come with a worked 28chopper that has done 83mph on our boat and steering wings.
Only selling to pay for the trailer

Finally got to spend some time in the bullet over the New Years break.
We raised the motor up 20mm. Its still probably 1inch at least under the pad. With a 25tempest got 78mph 1up. Changed to a 26Trophy and got 80mph 1up. The Tempest is alot easier to drive especially around corners.
Going to give a 27 lightening a run next week.
And there were some dik heads on the river over the week
What do you use to remove the sticky residue left after removing the stickers on the side of the boat? also I have a problem with the motor, anyone know where I can get hold of a workshop manual for a mariner 200hp? carbretteur vintage

Go to an automotive paint supplier and get some Prepsol...
Dave G..
Have found the best solution to the sticky residue left by vinyl stickers --
a 4" esaser rubber wheel that goes onto the drill, worked a treat
I tried just about everything else and this did the trick.
Cost $18.00 at an automotive paint seller.
Now to tackle the interior and the motor
Hi
Can anyone tell me anything about a 1985 Mariner 2.4L 200 ELPTO outboard. The boat that I am doing up has one on it and it has some issues ... It dosen't look like it has had a service in a long time, the cowl around the prop has a crack in it It is not circulating water and the list goes on..... are parts second hand or new available?
Any info at all will be a great help

A 2.4 200 , can be built into a tough motor .depending on what your intended use is .Crack in the lower unit ?mmm need to see a pick.Post a bit more info on the boat ,your budget and what your plans are .It may end up being more practical to trade up to a newer 2.5 L ?
I bought this boat on e-bay orignally to take the wife and grandkids for a social day on the dam .... I am currently racing catamarans and know very little about motors ... If it had a 30' mast and 60sq mtrs of sail it would be a different story .... but now that I have this it is starting to really get my intrest ... I am a firm believer in fun and competition on the water, and in the value of clubs. This boat seems to be very well built and I have tracked down the orignal owner in NSW(not the one that I bought it off) and he was telling me in our short conversation that he used to race it, the hull had been blueprinted and it is a solid boat.
My aim now is to (a) get it on the water and (b) to restore it to as close to orignal as possible, join a club and if the opportunity arises do some racing.
But having said that I must be conscious of how much money I spend on it ... boats have a nasty habit of costing a fortune and very little return.
Orignal Boat Name .... Another-Con
Boat Build ..... Bullet
Motor ... 1985 Mariner 2.4L 200 ELPTO

Hey 208 ,
You got your self a project there .laser prop will be good for skiing if is 21-23 pitch. Not pumping water is most likely a water pump kit no big deal. For me id get a compression test and more importantly a leak down test down to determine the condition of the motor ,check and change the gear box oil ,fora start.if you contact "Thewayweroll" on here he is up your way can probably steer you to a good mechanical guy ,dont mention my name as he is not talking to me because i wont build him the motor he wants .:thumbsup:Oh yeah and change out the steering cable

Cool thread, thought i'd chime in with mine (not Aust but its a genuine bullet from what i can tell).
Mid 80's 1750, fresh merc laser 220 (rings, bearings, reeds done not long before i got it - maybe some minor port/exhaust work), cable/wing steering, prop is "Shooter" 13 1/4 x 25PP
I've owned it for a year or so. I got it from a guy that had it set up to ski race but never got much chance to do any before he moved to Oz. I've had some issues with the engine that i've sorted thanks to this awesome forum. I've rebuilt fuel lift pump, removed all idle/advance modules and the oil injection and timed it accordingly - much less to play up :)
The boat appears to be the original gelcoat, and in awesome condition for its age. The guy before me had the upholstery done, hot foot, decent steering column/wheel with trim buttons etc, and the rebuilt engine installed.
I've been pretty impressed by this little boat and how it handles, and now the engine's issues are sorted i cant wait to get it out for the rest of the summer.
Let me know what you guys think, and if you've got any advice for me regarding its setup :)

I can't remember the exact details, but if you do a search on here, there is a nut that is half thickness aswell as a particular thrust washer which allows the use of OMC props on mercs!! I think you can buy it as a kit from some of the US vendors.
The half nut allows the nyloc section to take up fully, you can see in the photo above how the shaft doesn't come the whole way through the nut.

Hi Ive had Kiwi 1750 1850 and now own a 1880 bullet The 1750 had a 260 on it and on a gps we managed a speedo of 95mph with a skier (no way you would get me hanging onto a rope at that speed) Proberly the best all round ski ,offshore and circuit boat I ever had.
The 1850 was only a social boat with a 225 mercury great boat though.
Now the 1880 bullet is a new model but its really a 1850 with a different top deck My one has a 260 on it at present after the 280 melted in a offshore race.95 mph on a gps speedo is all we have managed so far never seem to get any more but we havnt tried alot of different props yet might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it(if it doesnt sell on www.trademe.co.nz (http://www.trademe.co.nz) next week).
Ive always thought the 1750 was like owning a porsche the 1880/1850 is like a Monaro(Pontiac GTO to Americains)
As my boating has turned more social the 1880 does the job great but ever now and then the 1750 is missed.
FYI kiwi 1850/1880s are moulded off a 21 foot aussie Bullet with 2 foot 6 inchs cut out ,we also get afew 1800 Aussie Bullets here the 1800 is faster as the hull is narrower.
Check trademe out there are quite a few bullets for sale at present.
Once got told by a guy with a Blow boat (yacht) that the motor was far to big for that size boat ,what can I say its a man thing he will never understand.

Hi Speed Racer Hope you are running a cell (be safe) The NZ record both way average is 106 mph over a measured Kilometer in a 1750 tunnel deck bullet with a johnson CCC Held by Rodger Seymour Now that was done with old tech .When the NZ rules on classes changed the speed didnt transfer over to the new rule book ,as we dont have any tunnel deck Bullets running any more it will proberly stand for quite a while .Getting speeds over 100mph is easier in a tunnel deck As we have more horsepower now you have a better than fair chance Good luck with your record . hey guys, i sold my v6 power head which was on this midsection, and now i only have the 12 inch mid, and lowwater pick up gearbox. It comes with a standard crossflow 150-200hp adaptor plate plate, so you can bolt on a standard power head with no mods required. has stainless steel solid top/bottom engine mounts, single ram trim with custom trim lines which connect to a mercury trim pump. gearbox is a v4 2:1 gear ratio, with a factory race 15 spline merc/yamaha or omc props. including in this sale is 2 stock standard v6 johnson/evinrude gearboxes. 20 and 25 inch shafts in good condition. also comes with a 9 inch setback jack plate. also a v4 adaptor plate can be bolted onto this midsection with only the exhaust tuner and water pipe to be cut down. i am looking for $1500 ono. i can remove the items if prices would like to be dropped.
need it gone asap. everything is bolt on and go.
I can e-mail pictures when requested. also my engine is listed here on this site if you would like to see the midsection all complete with power head and cowling. it is under johnson 12 inch v6 race motor.

To be honest it hasnt been weighed yet although two people can easily pick up the bare hull but I will weigh it asap.I spin a 32 ET prop and so far have hit 103mph but that is without a setup and testing.I reckon 105 is definately in there but have plans for much bigger numbers later on.This is a production made boat and is built on a POA.It has taken me to 2 Australian drag titles and has gone to within 1/4 of a mph of the speed record but I think I can break the record if I contest next Nationals. The last ones were at Vic at the national watersports centre.Good luck if you race at the Aussie titles:thumbsup:

103mph over400mtrs ,do they give you a 60ft time?wat time did you run over the quarter?have you ever run the boat past 103 ,not dragn ?no drags up here in qld ,unfortunatly .like to run fast over any format ,so i guess we be traveln a bit in 2010.draggd plenty in cars but not on water .had a look at one of these hulls with a mod2.4 on it a few years ago, regards
I thought they did 1/8th mile?

Race is 1/4 mile. They are a little behind with their timing systems so all I recieved was the tower calling my top speed.I dont know the e.t.I have never ran the boat past 103 but I am confident that it will go 105.have a look at this www.OnTheWater.com.au 2007 Drag Boats 2

to mercules 1750, i owned this bot for 3 year's before a phil barber bought it of me last may 2009. i sold the plain hull with trailer and trim pump for $4000. i bought it with a 2.0litre mercury and i got rid of that as it was blown up **** thing anyway, and cause i'm OMC blooded, i put my super strangler v4, and my tripple c ported v6 powerheads on it, with either 12 or 15inch mids. i got the boat weight at our local weighing station and it came to 159kgs with nothing in it, not even a tacho. two guys could pick it up of the trailer and put it on the ground easily, that was when i dont the springs on it. the hull is quick and very very easy to drive. good luck and post some more pics please, lots of memories with this boat.
thanks

Hi guys. Does anyone have experience with the (now) old 1800 bullets? It's the 30 yr old model with the perspex screen that always cracks. I've done the full rebuild (transome, floor, repaint) and fitted a fresh "88 straight 6 115 an a 6" jacking plate.

Sorry, pressed the wrong button before I'd finished. ... 1st run 3 weeks ago using a 20" Laser II, with the cav plate set 25mm above the bottom of the boat (plank). Any higher and it constantly broke out on corners. It revved to 5600 rpm and the GPS said 68 kph, but was sluggish to pull up a skier.
I've since sourced an 18" small ear chopper which I set a further 20mm higher - total now 45mm. I'm getting about 6500 rpm (tacho only reads to 6000), and GPS is showing the same speed. Feels healthier out of the hole, but haven't tried with a skier yet.
It feels like it needs to go higher, but I've been warned off this because of potential water pick up problems. I don't want to spend a lot on this set up (nose cone, low water pick up etc) as it is the trainer engine for my inexperienced 19 yr old. When he gets the hang of it, I have a 225 2.4 to bolt on.
Any words of wisdom to get the old girl going a bit better?

Need more info...... what pitch prop? what revs? what gearbox ratio?
i am assuming your gearbox is a 1.87 and also assuming you are running the motor at about 5500rpm then to get the speed you want then a 28 pitch prop will get you about 78MPH with no slip, then the slip will burn between 5% to 10% depending on prop and setup. so you are looking at about 70MPH give or take with a 28 pitch. so a 28p will get it there, now you just have to spin it with that motor, using an overhub prop will allow the motor to spin a bit better but you have a greater slip.
i would start at about 3 inches below pad (thats the prop shaft) and raise in small incriments keeping one eye on you water preasure gauge, once you get to a height where your water preasure drops then lower a touch and that is as high as you can go without assistance (low water pickup)
if you still need more hight i.e. foot is flat but revs are not there, the modifcations are required.
or just throw on a 150 or 175HP and be done with it

I believe that the gearbox is standard and not sure about pitch of prop.. But your bang on with the 5500 rpm.. Maybe a little more.. With the power prop I'm getting 6500..
Was thinking the same thing about the 150 or 175 but just found out I've got my first kid on the way and the missus recons there's better things to spend the money on.. Hi guys. Just thought I'd fire a couple of questions to the guys that can really drive their bullets...
I've got a mid 80's 1750 with a merc laser 220 2.4 on it. The engine is running great now and I'm able to start really pushing the boat along. I've never spent any time driving a quick boat till now. At first I was happy just burning around with the motor trimmed right down, the boat will start to float side to side (chine walk right?) even with the motor tucked under. If i trim it up a bit of course i get more power/speed and the chine walking gets more serious, with much more rpm/power left in the motor. Sometimes once up at speed the boat will actually start pulling to the right and the right side seems to pull down, kinda like the left side only is experiencing lift. Is this just me running too much trim or is this also chine walk combined with a heavier right-hand side than left? (it probably is slightly right-heavy even with a passenger) What's the secret to controlling this chine walk? I have foot throttle and trim buttons on the wheel.
I only ask this because the boat seems to want to go MUCH faster than I'm able to drive it. I dont necessarily want to use that speed (yet) but would like to understand how it's done so I can start getting my head around it.
Cheers guys, keep the Bullet pics coming, some cool looking boats out there :)

wat props are u spinning could be a big factor and other than that it is just seat time plenty of practice no 1 can really teach u just have to learn thats the way i learnt to drive a 1750 i had many guys jump in my boat wen i couldnt peddle it and they could just steer it with ease but wen i jumped back in bang chine walk but i knew the boat could do it so 1 big thing i learnt was try not to be a trim hogg slowly get it up to it and just gotta learn to flick the wheel to keep ya straight cheers

prop is a "shooter" 13 1/4 x 25pp
I believe it is an OMC prop? Its not quite the same diameter as the exhaust hub (maybe 15mm smaller). Dont know if this matters too much? I imagine there are better props for this setup but it definitely seems to do the job. It manages to pull my 3 person biskit outta the water with 3 guys on it and still has more top speed than i can handle.
I'll do what you say tho, just keep drivin' it till i get the hang of it

its in my back yard all stripped ready for a new floor and getting the transom fixed. i knew soon as i looked at it it would need a floor, it should tidy up pretty well. the deck is crackly however when looking from the bottom side it has squares everywhere which i would think would be for strength.. seems very thin..
seems light enough.. dad and i can lift the boat

Gmacrae, Setup & seat time is crucial to learning to get through chine walk. It sounds like you need to rebalance the weight in the cockpit & also sounds like your engine may be set to deep?
I did a search on here & found loads of info on setup etc.

Cheers Jim. I think you're right about the weight. To add to the problem, i just removed the oil tank from the light/starboard side of the boat and went premix, might move the battery next to help balance the thing. The output shaft is roughly 3" below the hull. Without a low water pickup i dont think i can raise it any more than it is. I will check that out tho, might hang a camera over the back next time im out on the water.

I moved the battery, fuel filter to the port side, & i also moved the tank from the bow to the rear, this alone made my 15 foot dancraft so much better!! The biggest diff. though was when i started raising the motor, i'm about 1 5/8 inches under now with 6 inch setback, & everytime i moved it up, the handling improved heaps!! unfortunatly i need to install my nosecone before i go up anymore! The difference from 3 inches to 2 inches under was big though!
Another tip i found on here was to put your boat in at the ramp & lay a spirit level across the floor, & shift stuff around till it sits level, remembering your own weight of course, haven't tried it, but makes sense.
Hope this helps, your rig is gunna be a weapon when you get it flying! I'm jealous!
Oh, & if you go to a three blade prop, you will prolly get more chine walk. When i got my offshore cleaver, that made the danny completely different (way better) to drive!
sorry to ramble on!

Good tips man, thanks very much. My motor has no setback, its right on the transom. I'll definitely see if i can lift it another inch tho. My gas tank is right in the back, 90L so its definitely pretty arse-heavy when its full. I also keep 2 20L tanks full of water or gas up in the front (balanced L/R). I thought when i got the boat that some extra weight up front would help - it actually did. The prop is a 4 blade, ill keep that in mind if i'm shopping for a replacement.

Nothing gives the same rush as going fast in a Bullet :D
This would be my humble opinion only but, No1 throw that prop away. Get a 3 blade prop, something like a Laser II or a Tempest. They'll be good all round props and won't do anything terrible to you. Don't put a Trophy Plus on it as it will give too much bow lift. If you want to flatten it out a bit but still control the nose, find a tubed cleaver. It'll lift the stern.
If you're gonna drive it by yourself (no passenger), then you're gonna need to distribute the weight more evenly. Battery on the port side will do wonders as a startign point. Take it for a run, then throw a couple of weights into the portside, say 40kg. Then take it out again and compare. Even take the tank out of the nose that's on the starboard side - that'll help. Relocate it to port, that'll help more.
Finally, chine walking - as has been said, it's a Bullet. The only way to learn is seat time. You have to "feel" the boat in your hands and your butt. Think of it like doing constant fishtales in a car on grass. You need to feel the weight transfer so you know how to counter-react to it.
As for engine height, you should be able to come up between 1" & 2" under the pad without troubling your engine. Prop choice has a "BIG" effect on this too. The shooter wants to run high and you are digging trenches in the bottom with it.
Finally, remember to do everything in small increments. Lifting the engine a full inch will completely change the boat. I can lift mine 10mm and feel a difference. Same with Trim, as Mercules said, don't be a trim hog. Run at a level till you're comfortable then step it up. Most importantly, always know where your "in" button is and be prepared to use it to settle the boat. Preferably, get yourself a set of foot trims buttons, that way you can throttle, trim, and steer and no part of your body has to do 2 things at once
Good Luck

Oz Dude - wicked info thanks mate :)
Just curious why you recommend 3 blade props? How do they perform differently? I've seen people tell others to stay clear of 3 blade props in favour of 4 blades. Aparently the 3 blades create more vibration? I know this is only part of the equation but i'd like less vibration if possible. GmJim mentioned that a 3 blade prop could create more chine walk?

Chine walk is the product of several factors, prop choice being just one of them. What works on my setup may not necessarily work on yours because your boat will have a different motor, motor height, setback, weight distribution, etc. Ultimately you want a prop that's gonna be relatively forgiving hence my suggestions.
How props perform differently - that would require hours of typing! Pitch, diameter, cupping, rake, blade shape, etc all affect how the prop runs
and what it does to your boat.
There is usually a good selection of props for sale on ebay at reasonable prices. To learn with I would get a Laser II somewhere in the region of 21-23". That will give you a nice ride, turn relatively easy, and something you can work with. You can run them fairly deep too so you wouldn't have to play with engine heights yet if you didn't want to.

Not meaning to change the direction here, but well done to my friend Richard Cleaver on his remarkerble record breaking run at the bridge to bridge power boat race on sunday . A win in 300 hp outboard class and a 44 min (not exact or official) run is very quick over a long river course and well done. Any one else got a story about the bridge, bring it on.

Bulldog - let me know how you go with that Mazco. Was thinking about props only this afternoon. Based on the numbers we ran at The Bridge, I reckon I'd just about nudge the 100 mark with a prop like that. Weather is getting colder, river is emptying out of weekend warriors, time to play is approaching :D

Mine, 97, made by roarke, mod vp bottom. Daryl beatie had one too but I think that ended up at azzona's in Sydney, they used it to flop a mold and I'm not sure where it went after that.
Yours, a Triad, it's got the ski bottom has'nt it?
John's, dunno who made his, his is the ski bottom too so I think it's a Triad but I know he was dealing with the LPB fella, don't think it was an LPB, but might have got it thru him.
Hmm, John's got a river rocket too, thinking that may be a LPB but I've never seen it.
hi guys the boat that arazona floped was my boat that i imported from the states. it was a mod-vp circuit racer. nothing could come close to it in its class and still holds the moc / mod-vp record in the bridge set in 95. not bad for a ****ty 2.4 carby engine. times are getting closer. i see a smoc boat nailed it this year. is this time right? if it is its a bloody good drive for smoc.

last steps on making the console this weekend. ie. laying up the final product.
I put it aside for a bit cause I was waiting on a new cutting tool. if ya ever seen the Fein Multimaster Marine Top check it out. I love this thing.
also glassing up the foot rest/crash barrier. should be interesting.
pity the carpet went down first. just more prep work.

no the boat was pulled apart from the deck and the bottom had a mould built off it. a new deck was made and the boats that they made from the bottom is a pickle folk.
i think my old boat is still owned by one of my old crew when i was racing. on the central coast.
if you got hold of the boat again and put a works burger S3000 on it i would think you would see numbers of between 115-120 mph if not more. i saw numbers of 107-110 with a dirty old 2.4 carby bridgeport. love the bullets but no bullet would keep up except on the trailer.

I raced "Mr Motion" a 17 super light connelly back in the early 90,s , sure wish i still had it . Set up with a bridgeport 2.4 carb would get into the 90,s boat alone. Love it back now , i think only about 6 were ever built and and only a couple remain . Any one out there know where she is?

Yep, still running Yamawreck next season with a new driver and last years driver stepping into the "Straightpoint" Bullet. Can,t tow both to Mildura so the Yammy V4 can stay at home. Then we have a 1750 tunnel deck bullet to rig for the season after for him to step into.
We have no match for Kwicktrip,s speed but just going for fun and testing and should be able to give Tim in Watercooled a run. .
Testing with quickfoot tomorrow so know more then.

so what is a kilo run?
its a timed kilometer, you hit the start of the kilometer as fast as you can go and the time you. you do 2 runs through it and then they work out your average speed from the times... make sense? im not sure i explained it the best way.
Thats what we need in Australia is a kilo run.

i wouldn't mind doin a kilo run either ,i'd reckon if someone set it up,they'd get a hell of a lot of interest.

Hi Kev, had a day of removing bloody doggy decals today. I will try and chase up that number for you.
The 1750 was originally called Quicksilver, Solven and then Doggy Fashion. There may have been a few other names in between but not sure. Its been painted many times and will be again.
Just looking at engine engine options and thinking about F1 2L. 300 hp they tell me?
Not sure if we want something that tempory or maybe will stick with SST120.
Just looking at importing one.

hey Kim, the thing would be a rocket with the f1 2.0..
Im looking at engines at the moment aswell. I was thinking of an sst120 however i feel it would be too peaky.. I.e all the power on the top end of rpm band. I think ill get another 2.0 fat block and port it somewhere near sst120 specs.. Will u be running quickfoot or a standard gearbox etc?

ok guys keen to get each ones feed back. has anyone worked out any numbers on what % slip and drag bullets run. i know it is depending on prop engine height , trim, weight etc. rough guide then
im setting up a 1800 bullet hand laid(guessing about 250-300kg. one person can lift back of boat empty)
will be running a S3000 on 20" mid with CLE box. have a 30" lab cleaver. to be safe i worked it out at 8000rpm with a ratio of 1.87:1
what is peoples idea on speed ???????

I have been told it was the 2nd one out of the mould and was originally called Quicksilver so i believe approx 1980 vintage..It was spun out whilst ski racing last year and had a new transom fitted so all good in that department. Seems a shame to drill a big hole for the 12" mid but must be done..
well the new boat hit the water for a run today. have the motor off mercules 1750, very nice and strong stockish 2.5l. if anyone needs a similar engine or more i recomend giving kev from qld outboard wreckers a call. very helpful and a nice bloke to.

yes mercules i will be doing the top end sprint. have a few mile stones for the next 12months i want to achieve. MOC class Bridge is on my hit list.
photos on monday hey, we will see hahahaha
Unfortunatly the "top end sprint" is not on this year. I was planning on making the trip up from Vic to try and go 1 place up from last year. The ski race guys and the NSW hydro club are not getting on at the moment so no race this year.
Darren Milgate
thats no good. cant they just kiss and make up. i ran the very first one and it was a great race.
according to the NSWHC the ski race guys wont let them use there rescue crews and the NSWHC dont have the resouces to fund or supply their own.
i gather its a money thing. up the entry and pay them more money.

The new Bullet is a 1750 and measures 5.18 M from memory. One of the first things we checked. Will let you know about the plank when i have a look.
We will run a 2L p/h for circuits and may run my 2.4 Efi and quick foot for the drags.
