70 to 75 mph tritoon: sportmaster or 5.44hd case

May be going with a gen 5 verado 350 or 400r. Both can be simonized to 450hp with just an ecu flash.

What gearcase would be better for a 70+ mph tritoon with a jackplate? I always heard the sporty was for 80+????

You have the option of keeping your stock gearcase if you install a Bobs nosecone w/low water pickup. The modification is super easy and will be thousands cheaper than buying a sporty or a cle lower. Bobsmachineshop advertised on this site.

24 foot, big strakes, jackplate and 450hp. Trying to rig it fairly light. 3,300 to 3,400 pounds ready to run.... which is by no means a light weight, but definately on the light side for a full interior tri tube toon.

Their stock test boat did 56 with no jack plate and a 250 suzuki! 200 more hp and a jackplate should get us over 70!

We will be modifying a few things and still need to pick out engine and jack plate combination. Been reading a lot on the 2016 and newer 350 or 400r and they can be wicked up to 455 for 800 bucks. Trying to find a low hour, 25", 2016 or 2017 verado 350 with standard gearcase or sportmaster. I just read on another board the 5.44" HD case is at least 2 to 3 mph slower.

I have not seen any tri-toon with a single 400 run better then the Hampton "playcraft". It stays aired up and doesn't drag at all.

what manufacturer is your boat. I have a 25 tritoon with a 300 and lifting strakes. And I have looked at a lot of tritoons, and the manitu with twin 400s does over 70. I have never seen a single come close. The best mine ever did by myself, light load and no bimini was 51. I have lifted the motor and it doesn't make that much difference.

The boat in the video doesn't even have seats. Might as well by a fiber glass boat.

It will be a Bentley 243 Navigator. My buddy sells them so we are going to custom order it soon. His other dealer friend got 63 mph gps with a stock 350 verado on their elite model which is 500 pounds heavier. On their lighter cruise model, same weight as navigator, just diff layout..they got 56 with a 250 suzuki. 75 might be a stretch, but we are shooting to see that "7"

The reason they seem to be so fast is that they have an aluminum transom that is stepped back from the middle toon giving it a notch and more bowlift

The boat on the left is the fastest 400 toon out there. This is Carolyn Doris-they own playcraft and Southbay. This boat has a modified 5.44 I believe. The speed comes from getting the boat to air up and hang out-there are twin boats that she beats with this one because they porpoise and scrub.

Thanks for that info. We are on a quest for 70. We will see what happens. Should be a fun project.

That video tells you that all of the single powered toons ran a best of 66. Those are the owners of the companies with tons of modifications done to them to get that number. And yes the front furniture was taken out of that Manitou.

Get him to build a twin so that you can run it with a load and still surprise some people. I would consult with Jim Doris and Brad Rowland. They have thousands of hours in testing and modifications. Brad has been the king for years now at 115.

The 350 comes with the regular hd 5.44" lower unit and the 400r comes with the hd sportmaster. You can't get it any other way and the sportmaster is $$$ so I wouldn't recommend converting the 350 over. I've heard many times to stick with hd unless you're running over 80. The SM case MUST be surfaced to get any advantage.

Good stuff. I can get a brand new left over 350 verado with the HD for 10k less than a new 400r with sporty. I think i know what way I am gonna go.
