Evinrude Gearcase Question?!?
2004 Evinrude DI 225HO MDL# E225FHLSRM SER# 05070007
I tore up the gearcase that’s original to the engine. Based on the model number the gearcase is supposedly a “lightning” gearcase.
My question is, will a magnum gear case work on my engine? I know it bolts up and the drive and shift shafts all align properly, but will I experience any operational problems down the road by using the magnum lower unit?1992 S.T.V. ProComp - Merc. 2.4 BP EFI Sold!!!

I am not sure but i think Lightning gear case were all 1.87 ratio. The L1 had round holes for water intake. The L2 also 1.87 but has plastic grates for water intake. The Magnum had 1.71 ratio for a few years. I have never heard of anyone happy with performance with a 1.71 case. I think newer Magnum cases went back to the 1.87 ratio. The 1.87 Magnum is a stronger lower then a Lightning L1 or L2. The bigger diameter case the Magnum has will not run as fast on a 70 mph+ boat. I think if boat is a heavy 65 mph bass boat the Magnum probably is the best choice. Disclaimer. I am Asst Manager at Burger King. I get my info from random post that may or may not be accurate info.

Dave is correct except the Magnum is 1.85 ratio. The L2 had the 1.71 gears when delivered on a 250HO

ya.. the magnum would be a better gearcase on a pontoon than a lightning...better ratiofor that.... and heavier gearset
