Thread: Looper exhaust porting

Ok Racer, I am listening to your advice - pistons now weigh exactly the same, had to grind appx 6-8grams from the inside of all starboard pistons.
After choosing among my 12 best rods, I have a appx 10gram diff between the lightest and heaviest rod. What is the best area on the rod, when it comes to lightening?
Another thing(when I have your attention)can you give me an advice on jetting this thing?
All ports cleaned, exhaust widened, fingers added, rod slots cleaned, intake mainfold cleaned from sharp bends, stock airbox. Stock steel reeds, no changes in port duration.
The fuel am using equals US 91oct, containing 10% ethanol.
Where shall I start?

I like to have my rods shot preened but if you do make sure that you make caps that cover the tin coating on the side of the big end of the rod.

Shot preened- what is that?
another thing; how do you guys attach a flywheel to the lathe machine, when it comes to lightening? I dont dare to use the center hub...Last edited by Captain75; 04-10-2014 at 12:22 PM.

Hello Capt. Shoot peening is popular to do with race car engines. They shoot small metall balls on the connecting rods. It may make the rods stronger. Contact Persåkers Speedshop outside Stockholm. He may know where to go for helping you.

Thanks Trommehinne!
I will check it up.
Have I understood things right if I don't grind the rods w/o this shot peening procedure?

I would not try to lighten up a stock flywheel. I have seen the damage that they can do when they come apart. But if you realley want to go there you have to make a mandrel to to fit the tapered hub and bolt the flywheel to it so that it can be turned in a lathe. An old junk crank cut off next to the counterweight works great.

I am having big trouble aligning the rods and rod caps to perfection. Some of the rods simply refuses to align w/o feelable seems.
I have already used several hours, and I feel that I need help with some tricks and pointers.
I've tried to do exactly as the shop handbook prescribes.

not an easy thing to teach remotely?
Any chance you can borrow the tool from someone?
Personally with unknown rods I torque them up in a vice ( with the soft jaws) beforehand so I can know before they are in the engine how the fit is.
PS someone was selling the tools from the production line the other day. ( which is different than the tool OMC sold)Last edited by powerabout; 04-29-2014 at 02:15 PM.

If someone finds it (I can't seem to) post it up.
