    labbed vs. non-labbed ET

im a lil confused on what merc is actually selling. specifically with their ET's .....on the merc HP website....they show the ET coming in a lab finish. they dont show a pro finish unless im missing it. if you look at a ET #48-849246L62 on the box its labeled "lab" finish. but im thinking this is the standard ET. Priced around 950-980 depending on dealer. i did see merc offered a "doubled lab" finish....is this what people are considering Labbed prop?

does anyone have a different part number for a standard or labbed in same degree (just used a 26 for sake of it)

was told the actual "labbed" prop cost is around 1400$?????

    whats the scoop

With that "L" in the part number it is a labbed prop. Never heard of "double labbed" from Mercury, but that's just me and I'm going from how it was many years ago. Things could have changed.

One other thing, the "L" part number should be stamped on the prop and an engraved serial number for the lab work.

I’ve always called props that came from be lab the first time “lab” and if you sent it back to
tje lab for changes that would be double. Right or wrong, that’s how I did it

thats how im reading it on the site ROB.... "double labbed" do they stamp the prop if they re-work it? do they work all props the same second go round?

do they even offer an ET that hasnt been to the lab at all? or they all ran through there once? seems like all the ETS purchased now have "lab finish" on label

A labed prop as sold n the box is a final exact or blue printed prop. A double lab is a prop reworked by merc to suit a customers rig and has a serial number stamped into it. If that prop is damaged or replaced then merc has the info from the serial number to repair or replace it.

I had some older labbed ets and they all broke. A non lab 28 is the lone survivor.

And because there is no L number in it it is a non labbed prop?

Are the labbed et's that much thinner and due to that prone to cracking?

I don’t know the entire history of the Mercury prop “Lab” but I do know it wasn’t until the late 90’s that they offered these services to the general public. In this timeframe you would contact “the lab” directly, discuss your application and they would either take your Mercury prop or pull one out of stock and blueprint it to the specifications they arrived on based on your discussion with them. It was an additional service and billed separately, I.e. they didn’t sell you a prop, just a service.

Aparently they realized there was money to be made selling a blueprinted prop and hence the out of the box “labbed” props being sold today with unique part numbers. For some of the high performance props like the ET it’s the only prop on offer. For others like the ProMax they offer a standard and labbed version. I imagine they looked at what was selling and made the decision to only offer some models as “labbed”.

Today a labbed prop simply means its blueprinted to the exact specs of the props original design, in the past it meant a custom prop worked to your specific requirements. I believe they still offer the custom service but you would probably want to buy a non labbed version, if it’s available and send it to them with the specs you arrive at based on a discussion with the lab. Doing a prop this way will result in a more expensive prop but it will be custom tuned to your application. I wouldn’t start with a production “labbed” prop in this scenario since a lot of metal has already been removed giving them much less to work with.
