    Lifeline Jacket Question

I have always wondered if Lifeline jackets are USCG approved PFD's. If you have one on and get stopped by the authority(s) can you be fined if its the only PFD in the boat? I see they offer a recertification but that seems to be a cleaning/repair and a date re stamp service.

They are not. From what I have told the certification process is way to complicated and expensive for their volume, especially as each color combination needs separate certification. Just carry another jacket in the boat--but wear the Lifeline.

    Per my hero Instigator:

That's my understanding also. But I'd hope a wildlife, dnr officer wouldn't actually know and wouldn't ticket you. But some I've run into have been first class schmucks.

You will NOT get a ticket for wearing a Lifeline. The rule says there must be a USCG approved PFD for everyone on board. There is no requirement to wear one for adults except in the winter in northern states. How can you get a ticket for wearing something not required?

If it's the only life jacket on board, you may be ticketed. Or if you have more people than uscg approved jackets you might be ticketed. That's how.

Well it's pretty stupid to have that as the only jacket. If you read the post, it states the law.

Transom, did a cat pee in your cheerios. The OP asked "if it's the only pfd in the boat". I did read the OP. Not sure why you would want to call folks stupid. A person asked a question and a few folks answered his question along with with some comments.

I bought a five or six pack of life preservers in a clear plastic case, on sale @ West Marine for $29.95 threw them up front, under the deck. An officer can see them with his flashlight.

I asked a prominent engine builder and a multi-time championship winning customer of his about the "anti-bucketing helmet collar" on a Lifeline .. "rolling the wearer over face down" if not wearing a helmet and unconscious.

They answered in stereo : If you get thrown out over 100 MPH , a Lifeline will say on you. So the family won't have to wait for days , till the authority's can find the body.

Now, more importantly , what kind of jacket does the rabbit wear ... ???

I have been stopped at least a dozen time by either Coast Guard or the Sherrif's water patrol for "safety inspections". Couple of times we had on Lifelines. They do not even ask about jackets when we are wearing those. However, I do have legal jackets just in case. FYI life jackets in a plastic case is not a good idea. They are supposed to be instantly accessible. CG does have rules about that. I doubt they would issue a ticket though. Just give a warning. I have taken the CG course, stopped at least a dozen time and volunteered for safety checks that would give us a CG safety sticker to prevent further checks for one year.

For $29.95 they weren't individually wrapped in their own plastic pouch .. just one plastic pouch with a handle and closure straps. (its only been five or six years, should I try to get my money back)

I'll tie a small rope to the handle, for instant eject from the under deck to floor area in lickity-split time ... bouyy, thats the fastest I ever seen someone git holt of their jackets .. gotta be some kind of new recordt ..

    Yanked a dozen times .. what-da-ya look like ... a convict .. ???

I bought four Stearns jackets. They cost less than one Lifeline. Gotz crotch straps. Plenty of rib padding. Reflective material sewn in so they can find ya floatin at night. 100MPH buckles. USCG approved.
Good enough for little ole me, you real racers need better quip-ment ..

P.S. Don't forget your throwable .. de-vice .. whistle, rules of the road, and make sure there is a single space be-tweenst your letter's and numbers ..

    Now .. bout dat si-wee wabbet ... ???

    Hi.

Does Lifeline jackets turn you around if you get unconscious ? In Norway approved lifejackets need to turn you around with your face in the free within seconds.

    Cheeers, Toffen.
