Offset Low Water Pickup Holes in Nosecone

Anyone seen this sort of thing before? Is this designed to create a “drag bias” on one side of the nosecone to help offset the torque of the propeller? This unit has a torque tab as well, although it’s not bent as much as the typical torque tab, so I’m wondering if this water pickup offset helps offset the torque??

I believe that to be an Allison modification. Show a pic of the skeg cuz the Ally mod involves the skeg also.

Not buying any drag "bias change" for torque reduction. I saw no change in my testing. Titus used to do several different intake configurations and I'm sure others did as well. I have the starboard hole in my Sporty plugged, it increased speed .7 MPH. But I would only do it in a motor that makes tons of water pressure.

I’ll take a picture of the skeg/tab and post it up later.

Thanks. I was just wondering why it was off-centered like that, and that’s all I could come up with, lol.

I purchased a sportmaster from a friend because he said the motor would get hot. He had been using it on his Ally when it was stock and it worked fine. Motor is a 15" 200xs ros. After modifications the hot issue appeared. I bought it cuz I needed a 15" lower and figured I could make it work. Turned out he had a 1/2" water tube. I changed over to the 3/4" I have always ran and it has never failed me. Had lower on several STVs and a couple Allisons. As far as the mods go I could not tell you if it made any difference or not. My guess is their blocked hole was to make the supply to the prop cleaner. I think the 3/4" tube is necessary with only 2 holes.

Thanks. I’m running a 3/4” tube and it was making right around 20 psi with my other XR6 with Bobs nosecone.

I was told it gives cleaner water to the starboard side for the prop.

That's a common mod. And THAT one is supposed to help with torque steer. It creates a low pressure area to "pull" the gearcase straighter. I have not tested it because there's no claimed speed increase and my setup doesn't present much torque steer.

Sorry if there was any confusion. I was replying to the offset intake hole mod not the torque tab mod.

I think that theory is total crap. Next time somebody tells you that ask for proof. Nobody has ever been able to show any evidence of it. "Clean water" and "rising water" off the transom are wildly overrated.

Yep, I know what the torque tab is for and how it works, lol. I haven’t come across any high speed outboard with a surfacing prop that doesn’t need one though.

That’s going to be really hard to prove…

That is true. How do you explain the .7 mph increase with the starboard hole plugged?
Meant the speed inrease to transomstand.
