What is this?? Pulled Powerhead
Pulled a powerhead and this stayed on the driveshaft. What is it?

That is part of your blown out bottom crank seal. I blew several on my 2.5s over the years, probably from lean-sneezes.

I did more research. Looks like the seal carrier. Designed to keep the splines on the driveshaft clean I think. Not really part of the seal it seems

Nothing to do with crankcase sealing, just a seal(o ring)carrier that taps into the bottom of the crank to keep grease on the splines and water out of them, clean it and the crank, apply your favorite glue, and tap it back...Chris

Technical term IS seal carrier about half the motors I build them half not they tap onto the bottom of the crankshaft , my guess is to protect the splines from salt or brackish water I coat the hell out of the upper drive shaft spline with a good grade of anti seize before assembly, works great

Yes,be sure you do,without it in place the grease will quickly be slung out and the dry splines will wear and rust away in salt water...all 60 degree mercs,2.0,2.4,and 2.5's 1976 on came with them, and although sometimes they fall out and get left out, they need to be in place.Do not put a big gob of grease on top of the driveshaft when putting the gearcase back on,as this can hydraulic the seal back out when the grease is compressed... with no place to go,it pops the seal carrier out,Chris

All the Mercs I deal with are freshwater bass motors. I've never seen one...

I suppose you might get away with not having it in place in a limited use fresh water situation, where i'm at the splines would be gone in a year of fishing,or so frozen the gearcase wouldn't come off...all the cranks came with them from the factory,if they aren't there they have simply been left out, fact, not opinion...

Thanks Chris for that info I will take it under consideration . I’m always willing to learn and improve my work . Been building these hi per motors for 25 years but always willing to consider others ways of doing things
Thanks,

Yes they do! We get very very few FW motors in out shop but when we do oh my is it a treat. Lol
I always love the freshwater guys in class that say, "make sure you lock tight that bolt" and the saltwater guys respond with "lock tight? You better anti-sieze it so you can get it out".Last edited by RSWORDS; 07-13-2019 at 06:34 PM.
