Cosworth Casting Limited wasn't utilized for a number of years of initial 3.4 production. Mercury cast all of them. The engine on the tunnel in the photo was a minimum of 340 horsepower...

...Yes, the first "production" consumer 300 was advertised and available in fall of 1979, by Mercury. There were a few pre-production "consumer" motors rigged & run by a handful of select Mercury Dealer Owners, for test & feedback purposes, for a year or more before that.

So the first 300 came out in 79? When was the end of there run and what was the next production 300, I know the 300PM came out in late 90s.

3.4 L - Merc's Last Shot At OMC's V8s
This engine had a lot of problems with its piston mass and its inability to shed thermal waste heat (Exhaust stroke). It's the main reason why OMC decided to go with 8 smaller slugs going up and down versus 6 when it came to displacement any larger than 3 litre. Merc's 3.4L V6 and OMC V8 ultimately met the same demise. Boat owners would rather spend their money on big outdrives than monster outboards (1980's and 1990's).
Here we are in 2018 and V8 behemoths are commonplace (Yamaha and Merc 4 strokes).
