Tuff 16 Prop Selection
Picked up a new Tuff 16. Fun little boat running a Yamaha 90 2-stroke. Engine came with some kind of 17-pitch. The boat was running 49mph at roughly 6,000 RPMs. I'd like to still pull skiers under 160lbs but want some decent performance--ideally into the mid-50s range.
Thoughts on prop selection? Hill Marine has a nice selection of Yamaha props. Or maybe a Yamaha Talon FX4?

Is that a 13 spline or 15?

I’d be looking to Small ear choppers for starters. I spin a 22 and a 24 with a 75 on a 15’ stream. I love that 24 it works great. Tickles 60

If a 14.5” diameter will fit under the cav plate your options open up big time. Lightning et for instance would be great although after running one all season a good small ear is not far off and in some ways, more fun. The only space I give the nod to the et is no crazy bow lift in hairy water. It’s a very neutral carrying prop. The choppers will pop you nose high if your not careful but this is less concerning with the small ears. Anyways every time a prop thread comes up I start thinking about this one and that one and I can say for certain the more the merrier. Props are like shoes. Some good for hiking some for running some for dancing. All great to have lol
Now I want to buy another prop thanks pal

I ran the same boat/motor combo with a 23-24 lazer 2 and it worked great. Had to work the hub to fit at the gear case a slight bit and cut the zinc anode for clearance. Went 62 alone and 58 with 2 people.

We got 55 with two people on a Hill 19 pitch three blade. Going to try a 20 pitch FX4 this weekend and see how it does. I still want a little pet getting out of the hole, so the small vent holes and extra blade might help

I am a big fan of small ear choppers on small light V bottoms, the problem is finding any these days.

Me too, and yes you will want the vent holes! Mine was a little picky getting on plane with 3-4 people on board.

Ended up liking the FX4 a lot. 56mph with a 20 pitch. Might add another two vent holes or something
