30ft+ cats with twin outboards are nothing new. Powerboat magazine tested this Maelstrom 32 cat with twin Evinrude V8s rated at 400 hp each in 1988.

Paris 6 Hours 1978 started in Finland for me..!!

The Scandinavian Championship race for the Offshore Z class 1978 was in Kotka, Finland.
Weather conditions was extremely tough..storm and big waves..
I stuffed the Delicato/ARGO/Evinrude V-6 way out on the Baltic Sea and my co-pilot
Curre and I had to swim for a long time before some one came to rescue us.
The boat was OK..but the best thing with that race was my old friend Angelo Vassena

Are any of those motors still running? I looked at one when I bought my Optimax and I didn't like the operating principle of the system. It was like running your motor with a "Wagner Power Painter". Green Marine LLC just about killed the Evinrude brand.

Yes, there is plenty of Evinrude Ficht still running. Not one of the better OMC engines but the Ficht was replaced by E-TEC 2003.
Early Merc Optimax was not much better. I spent many summers at MarineMax, Lake Of The Ozarks and have seen all the Optimax powerheads blown..
