Used to be only #1/2/3 Phillips head, with a standard profile. But now there are at least a half dozen profiles in each size, pick the wrong one and your screwed! Or in this case maybe not.

How about the 5 point star security screw that OMC locks the timing down on the optical ignitions with? That one was a head scratcher the first time I saw it. Didn't even notice it was a 5 pointed star until I tried the security torx bit on it!

Critical to mate the screw head to the correct driver. I dont know all the star/phillips/posi? names but I always test fit before leaning on them and if there is any wear on the driver or any wobble during test? I dont use. With above the serated tips work very nicely, Snap on and some other brands use these. The square Robertsons are a very nice screw but most of the deck screws are so poorly made whether its square or phillips the QC is very poor. Screw quality on the whole these days is fairly poor compared to the older product. A true Robertson brand screw with a matched driver is impressive. The screw holds itself on the driver even inverted and is quite difficult to slip during use. I never really cared for TORX, too easy to strip and it dont take much corrosion to render them useless.

All that said if its wood and needs beef? I use hex head lag type and counter bore the head, cover it with a small glued in dowel to hide the screw. My grandfather didnt like screws much for anything so if he had to "cheat" he would dowel over. That look kinda stuck with me I guess

Jay, I have some deck screws I used for putting together a piece of fence that I built. At first glance they are number three Phillips, but they really have their own bit which, if I remember correctly, came in the box. The bit locks into the head nicely, but it's really too wide for a Phillips.

I want to say. A lot of those deck screws do come with there own bits, the Philips are posi I believe. Most of those that look like they take Phillips actually drive better with a square tip driver, surprisingly better in fact.

As said there are a few different varieties of cross head screws.

For wood get some torx deck screws. They are cheap by the box.

Plus if you are using harder wood, you will need to predrill.

The "PRECIOUS" grippy snap on phillips bit. Came with or was given when I bought ratcheting screwdriver off "The Truck" It, along with DeWalt 1/4 impact driver take no doo-doo from any damn Phillips head fastener. This bit is blessed.... Hasn't wore out, gotten lost, stolen or broken. Years of use,Click image for larger version.

ID:	429766 some abuse. Has been hammered into numerous stripped screws with good success. Saved me from drilling many times.
I don't install decks for a living, but this bit has literally withstood thousands of repairs on boats and autos, along with some light home type stuff. No tool set should be without!
