Thread: Wings?

FYI ..... I just measured the wing area on Dust'n the Wind II ..... It is 15.5' x 4'... or 62 Sq Ft. I know that the Switzers made the original wing section at 15' to meet the twin engine length minimum and the sponsons were added later , giving additional (but maybe not for purposes of class measurement in the APBA) length...so the 18 footer had a comparable wing size. Interesting that the 20 footer only has about 6" of additional airfoil length, indicating that perhaps Dave Switzer felt they had too much lift in the 18 footer proportionate to its length and given the emerging horsepower race between the various factories.
20 Foot Switzer Wing 2 X S3000 (Dust'n the Wind II)
!6 foot Wood Eltro Vee (2X Merc 1500's) (Dust'n the Wind IV)
15 foot Powercat 15C (2 X Merc 1500) (Dust'n the Wind III)
(Single engine boats are lacking something
)
15’ Wooden Switzer Shooting Star...
16 foot Lee Craft Merc S 3000-(Gold Dust II)
(The exception proves the rule)
Obsolete and Proud of it

I bought the V front from Wayne Meyer when racing had the boathouse/yard down on the Fond du Lac river in 1969. The V front was parked in the weeds by the front fence, I don't remember any other wings there, just some offshoe hulls. Wayne said he was supposed to burn the V front, $100 later I was on my way home with it - pretty sure the $100 went in his pocket - who cares?

When I acquired my 1967 Switzer Shooting Star years ago there were a set of stacks with it that the owner said were Quincys from his 1967 1100.never gave it much thought. If I can figure out a way to post pics maybe y'all can tell me what they are.

so these were faster than a skater whilst using half the horsepower?
was plywood the technical advantage they had over modern boats?

I have one of Schoonovers engines. The stacks are all stainless and were brazed together at the joints. I had them polished and you can see the brazing clearly. I always was told Quincy didn't go to the expense of making stainless tacks, just steel. Only what I am told.
Maybe Gene could set us all straight.

They look like Mercury stacks to me. I put a lot of Quincy 6 pipe stacks on and they were all steel with no reinforcements.
Two pictures of Mercury stacks on a 110 drag boat that Mercury, Ron and Ted jones built for Skip Talbot. Stacks are reinforced with gussets like Magicfloats
