    Not at The Romp

And the ones that do are usually highly modified. I've never seen it.

I am with David on this one, 2.5's are fairly stong motors.

My challenger is running a best of 78.9 on GPS now and that is with a 2.5 carb 100% stock........it will break 80 with a little more setup........then I am bolting on a 280.

    Sure

But what are you turning to only get high 70s, 7000+? I just feel bad making a motor work so hard.

    Oh yea

What's up with that, Yamaha is supposed to be unveiling one right? Anyone got details?

    I'd buy one for sure.

    Thumbs up 2.5 V-6 merc

Is probably one of the most refined designs out there, almost 30 years of production and refinement and the current 280 has just about every good idea mercury has thrown at it. Am I afraid of it coming appart? not really, as long as I leave it stock and prop it to allow it to turn up like it was made to do.

Do they come apart, sure they do, what dosen't, but like Fly said they are usually highly modified or as I have seen, improperly lubricated, bad fuel, or over propped (lugging the motor).

We have all seen many broken outboards, but there are also allot of very dependable 2.4's and 2.5's out there so it will be interesting to see how well the 300's hold up over time.

BTW, thanks for the compliment at100plus

    Early V6's

I'm calling them early, but whatever you call them they are made in the USA. Remeber that place where you live, work, and pay bills? I kinda think of them as small block chevys, just getting older and better, spinning away. 3.0s are good to, like BBCs more cid more low end power.. If a chevy 350 can turn up with it's big stroke why can't a 3.0? With out BLOWING to peaces that is? Boy this thread goes on

    2.5 Hi perf engines

First of all they squeez a lot of power out of a small package. One of the reasons IM a big fan of them.
IM not however a fan of hot rodding them all that much especially by raizing compression.

Secterts to keeping a 2.5 alive.

Keep stock compression or under 140 lbs
Use 1/2 fuel line. 5/16 return
Run good 93 octaine with synthetic oil
Run 2 fuel pumps with a slosh tank
    Ballence internals
    Top pin pistons.
Replace electronics every 3 or 4 seasons.
(hard part) Keep rpm under 8,000 but over 7,000 when maxed out with light load.

After years of broken engines and dealing with morons who say they they fix them this is what I learned from this board and doing things myself.
3 seasons on the back of my boat and my engine has never failed. And I use it for all its worth. 2 runs alone where 70 miles with one stop in between at full throttle.
If you cant rebuild a 2.5 or your best friend cant either I would strongly suggest my recipe or run a different engine.

Oyeah I have a 280 long block for sale. ballenced and ready to assemble. $4000 with MAD EFI flywheel. Just renicked.
