Every 1500 inline ever made came from the factory with 2:1 gear ratio. The 71 1150/1350 was the last of the 1.78:1's in inline 6's. The 4 cyl 850's in the 70's would've had 2.3:1 and looked identical externally as far as the gearcase goes. I've run across at least 1 1500 that somebody stuck a 4 cyl gearcase on, so it's best to check. The 1.78's from the early 70's were noticeably blunter on front than a 76 gearcase would be. I've run across a couple of those that'd been switched onto later 1500's also. Lots of stuff gets switched around on old motors in 30 years.
