    Kitson/Powercat .....

This picture reminds me of a story Kitson told me back in the late 60's. We were sittin' in the pits, BS'ing about something when a couple of multi motored Powercats went by on their trailers. I made some comment about what wild looking machines they were and that I didn't think I'd jump at the chance to get behind the wheel one of them.

He laughed and said he used to drive one. I thought he said it was powered by triple Merc's, but I'm not sure. He said that a few years back, he was at a race and while in the pits, he took a little hit from a small flask he kept in his pocket. Unfortunately, the race referee saw him do that. The ref walked up to Kenny and reminded him that drinking before the race was against the rules. Said he was sorry, but was going to have to disqualify him from racing that day.

Kenny said wait a minute, I'd like to show you something. He took the ref over to his triple Powercat, let some time pass for the ref to really get an eyeful and then asked .... "Would you get into this thing sober?"

The ref laughed as he said "no" and walked away!

I used to know a guy who drove a Raveau in H class. He got so nervous before every race he would take a shot or two. Eventually I asked him why if it scared him that bad he kept doing it? He had no answer for me.

Six Pack Multi - Battery Set Up?

Getting back to drivin' boats, I think I have mentioned most of the multi's that I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to run across the water. I didn't have or do anything special to get to drive them, it was simply timing ..... I happened to be in the right place at the right time. If it wasn't for Jimmy Kubasta, I would have never even been there, but that's a story for another time.

There were a few other fun rigs ..... a Switzer V with twin BP's for Habay to run at the Nationals, one of the first Dutchman twin tunnels Schoonover produced and the multiest of the 'Hot Multi's' ..... the infamous Six Pack

Been meaning to ask a question about multi set ups (anything greater than two...). Did these rigs lug around 6 dedicated batteries for each engine or were they rigged with some kind of monster selector switch for starting?

Do you mean 'two or more'? The rule of thumb--one battery for two engines---but that didn't always work--lot of races lost because of battery problems--always more frustrating than mechanical issues

...i recall tunnel boats transitioning to smaller lighter motorcycle batteries in the early eighties. maybe before that. then two of them together. then 24 volt for faster trim. then...

    Batteries For Racing Tunnels

Yeah, the change to motorcycle batteries was a great idea to save weight but it also had a drawback. These batteries had no depth in CCAs. If you had an engine that didn't light up at the touch of a starter, motorcycle batteries would wither in seconds. Racers who used motorcycle batteries continuously had them plugged into chargers. A lot of us used golf cart / lawnmower batteries which had more depth in CCAs than motorcycle batteries. Battery strategy has probably changed again with lithium technology.

Here are some Dual Engine (Mercury) Winners:

    Bill S., Odell L., Jan S., and Johnny B.

One irony (in the photo) is Jan Schoonover is wearing the Mercury logo on his shirt, and the other three (who are) Mercury Lake X employees are not.
