Seized drive shaft in Crank???
Tried to pull off a gearcase for a 120hp Johnson looper 1995 to change the impeller as in 10 years it had never been serviced, after removin the bolts and Forward/Reverse shaft the gear case wouldnt come out .
I think that the driveshaft is jammed in the crankshaft
has anyone had this kind of problem before??what should I do should I try to remov e the block instead?
Any input/ideas would be greatly appreciated
thanks
David

7 bolts I think,2 and 2on the sides,I removed trim tab and another bolt under tab and another one more towards the boat. I checked and rechecked im sure I removed them all( they were all seized I even had to heat it up to remove them)
This is not the first time Im servicing a Johnson, but this one seemes to be all jammed

Fairly common problem with salt engines.Try prying on it while the engine is running.I have had bad ones that would not come apart and usually the splines in the crank are bad.Good luck.Dave

I have a 96 saltwater looper that gave me all kinds of problems getting it apart. I took a metal 2" scaper and tapped it in at the seam to help it break free. The I had to beat the living dog$h!t out of it to get it loose. It was a good thing I only needed the case, cause the bottom of the mid lookeded like crap after I was done prying and beating on it.
That little grease packet in the waterpump kit only works if you use it!

If it wont come out I guess thats the only way to go and try to do the least damage possible

I had the same problem not too long ago with a 200 merc. I went through all the senarios, beatin on it, cedar wedges, heat, starting and beating on it, etc. Nothing worked, the last thing is to make a hole in the mid section and use a cut torch to cut the shaft. Then you can lower the midsection and lower unit. Then get a puller on it and prey the crank splines aren't gone. This is an unfortunate thing, I wound up selling mine for a quarter of what it was worth, becuase I didn't have the time for the last resort.
good luck, Ed

let it soak, lay it on the ground, hook lifting ring to a tree, hook 4wd DODGE* to lower unit put DODGE in Low gear pull slowly, worked for me, no damage.

Good Idea ,
I guess thats one way to make a hard pull without beating and deforming the gearcase
Hope it works for me the same way it did 4u
many thanks guys

heating the crank
i basically tried them all , I even pulled the gearcase with a 2 tonne chainblock and the damn gearcase wouldn t come off,
Now I opened her up and had to break the lower end cap so I would be able to heat the lower end of the crankshaft.
Will I damage the crank if I heat the lower end?? which is the best way to heat it using a slow heating process to heat it all up equally or use co2 to heat just the lower end spot?
please help

can you borrow a bearing seperator large enough to have support on the midsection
and still come under the ball bearingLast edited by PanRonnie; 08-21-2009 at 12:02 PM.
