    Betting on drivers
It was called the Calcutta. It was an auction, as drivers were sold to the highest bidder. That's why it was sometimes better to form groups to buy drivers when the bidding got too high for a individual to handle. The amounts paid for some top drivers was outrageous, and your drivers odds grew accordingly. It was complicated, but fun...especially if your dark horse driver finished well.

CALCUTTA wasn’t just at Havasu, although that was where i first came across it.
Used to be at Fenton Missouri {SAINT LOUIS] on the Friday night . Mark had been given the first plastic Seebold to run —- weighed in at just over half a ton—- collide with it at your peril.
at the Calcutta , Billy and Michael fetched nearly $3,000 apiece ——- Benny brought in $2,500, Jimbo around the same —- and so on !!!! Marks name was called , so i bid ten dollars . Jimmy Hauenstien called me a mean SOB and raised the bid to fifteen—— told him to back off and at least let me bid on my son. So in a mad fit of Depression, i bid $20 , and walked off with the Mark Wilson for twenty bucks.
Comes the race, Benny had IBM sponsorship—— a hot factory motor, and a brand fire new wood Seebold . Benny took pole . Michael, Billy , Felix, then Mark.
That’s how they stayed for the first half of the race —- Benny came up to lap Mark , took him six laps to get by. Meanwhile the three behind had all passed Mark, and Benny , but he was still in fifth.
Michael was declared winner with Sorales second and Billy third—-Benny fourth and Mark fifth.
Michael was weighed and declared underweight and thrown out.
Same thing happened to Felix !!!!!!
This meant that Billy won——Benny was second and Mark moved up to third .
Calcutta paid me over $3,000 .
Spent it all at „“CHARLES THE TRUTH‘S „“ pawn shop.

Somewhere among that crowd on the shore is yours truly. That was the only time I attended that race. Would love to have had a chance to drive in it.

    And fascinating transactions happen, as far as my youthful sensibilities have never encountered before;
BETTING on boat race drivers. I hope others will post more details of what transpired then at Havasu.

It must have been Friday evening before Saturday’s race. The organizers held an open bidding on race drivers. I do not remember if any of the drivers were bet on solo. But I do remember there were multiple groups of 3 and 4 drivers in collective groups. There were groups like (Seebold, Pruett, and Renato) and (Jimbo, Sanders, Scotti and Woods) etc, these examples are only as references. And if you were a driver not placed in a group to be bid on, then you were in the Field Group to be bid on.

Side note; McCullough’s daughter bid on someone or group, and I remember someone remarked, she was interested in said race driver (I do not remember which driver) for a possible romantic evening.

Last year for Havasu by the factories? Yes..........But the Havasu race itself continued on without Mercury and OMC well into the late 80s.

Might want to look at the names of the winners of Havasu after the '72 race. Jimbo a few times, Bill Seebold a few times, Ken Stevenson, Brian Daily...etc etc. All factory supported. To say anything else would be wrong.

When it was brought back it was called the Havasu Classic. Two hours each day and many other classes were allowed. E, J, Mod-50 and V bottoms. No doubt driving a Mod U boat around all the slower boats kept you on your toes. Bill, Art Kennedy and Jimbo all won it.

Lake Havasu Classic Outboard Championships Returns

    OSAGE BEACH, MO:
In celebration of Lake Havasu City, Arizona’s famous London Bridge and its 50th anniversary, powerboat racing will once again dazzle the shores of the city with the running of the beloved Lake Havasu Classic Outboard Championships. The powerboat racing event will be held October 15-17, 2021, and will be conducted by the prestigious NGK Spark Plugs Formula 1 Powerboat Series, renowned for its heart thumping high-horsepower racing excitement performed by world class international powerboat racing stars.

The race headquarters and free fan viewing will be at the Nautical Beachfront Resort at 1000 McCulloch Blvd. N, overlooking Thompson Bay, which long-time powerboat fans will remember as being the original location of the championships dating back to 1964.

Many Havasu Classic stars from the past will also be in attendance to revel in the excitement of this highly anticipated racing event, which includes the rededication of the city’s famous London Bridge.

The winningest powerboat driver in history, the legendary Bill Seebold, will host the Racers Reunion driver’s party, pairing Havasu racing legends with vintage race boats of historical Havasu significance, which will also be on display for the fans. With the NGK Series event being a rare double header, this ensures that racing fans will enjoy three full days of action-packed excitement featuring three classes each day: Formula 1; Tri-Hull and Formula Lights.

The city’s founder, Robert P. McCulloch, Jr. was the first to initiate the outboard championships at Lake Havasu in 1964, and with his visionary skills, the race soon became a Lake Havasu Thanksgiving weekend tradition, drawing competitors from every corner of the globe for high stakes cash and prizes. As the enterprising owner of McCulloch Motors, he later purchased the then-sinking London Bridge in 1968, numbered its granite blocks, and then shipped the pieces of noble English history to the USA. Upon their arrival in Lake Havasu, McCulloch then resurrected the granite blocks in the exact same order over man-made Bridgewater Channel, a feat that was completed 50 years ago, creating a tourist mecca in the heart of the Arizona desert.

Lake Havasu City continued to host the Lake Havasu Classic Outboard Championships through 1990.

The NGK Spark Plugs Formula 1 Powerboat Series, and its director Tim Seebold, aim to resurrect this historic event and reignite the prestige of world class powerboat racing to the city’s beckoning shores. “Lake Havasu and the Classic have a special place in our families’ hearts, we are honored to be part of this historic 50th anniversary event for the city,” remarked Tim Seebold. “The powerboat racing world’s historic alignment with the City and Classic will once again be front and center showcasing the excitement to the fans on the shores of Lake Havasu.”

“We are thrilled with the enthusiasm of the Seebold family and NGK Spark Plugs to put on this nostalgic race to help to pay tribute to Robert P. McCulloch and the birth of the city,” said Terence Concannon, President/CEO of Go Lake Havasu tourism bureau. “McCulloch’s history of winning outboard races and starting the World Outboard Championships in 1964 is a strong testament to the passion he had for the engines and the sport, which eventually led to his vision of rebuilding the beloved London Bridge here.”

I dunno.........Nautical Inn and motels there years ago were an "outpost" on the lake. A heck of a lot more people live there now. Logistics could be a problem with closing the lake for the race to recreational boaters. Refueling pit stops ain't gonna happen, that's for sure. I'm not sure there are any boat racers out there who still have that equipment? APBA sanctioned? Hope not!

With only 20 tunnel F1 boats running at the same time, I would think they will have to run a smaller course than the original 60's & 70's race configuration.
A shorter course will make the race more interesting for the spectators.

Do you think my recollection (in yellow) of the 60's & 70's Havasu race course, is near to what it actually was then?

Chick: you are correct again, as usual, and rotary John was wrong again. Factories just did things different after 72.
