Tuners plural, top triple tuner is the passage within the ex chest below #3 to including the short side shown next to the bottom triple tuner.
In the fresh " green finished " pic above the short top side is also present, same layout and design through the chest to that point for the top triple.

If you want to compare apples to apples measure travel from top of chest #1 to end through adapter, #4 to end of its tuner to both designs.

    Good pictures

Number of units & serial numbers .....

Don't take this to the bank, but here is how I remember some of this,,,,.

When a manufacturer wanted to produce a motor targeting a specific class in OPC racing, APBA rules declared that a minimum of 100 units must be produced and offered for sale. Mercury wanted new race motors to compete with OMC's souped up 90 cu. inch 115 that started running in the family classes in 67. That meant they had to be shiftable .... F-N-R. As a result, the idea for the BP was born.

Mercury OPC Racing had not yet been formed and High Performance Products was five years away. Wayne Meyer had a small group building offshore racing engines at the Fond du Lac boathouse location, but they were inboards, not outboards. With no other viable place for this work to go, I think the 68 BP and 69 SBP's were assembled at the main production plant in Fond du Lac. The BP gearcase may have been assembled at Meyer's location and sent to the main plant for installation. Serial numbers would have been assigned and recorded in the same manner as any production motor was handled. I think a second run of 100 of the 1969 1250 SBP's was required to meet demand. Motors used by Merc's offshore group came from these builds.

The Twister and TI were built at Meyer's Fondy location. I think Armon Weigert was put in charge of these builds. They put a group of people together that consisted of Merc employee transfers and new hires. While getting this location ready for the build, they were also setting up Merc's first high performance stockroom, they just didn't know it at the time. Armon would have assigned the serial numbers and kept the records. However, he is noted for losing things, so I doubt they are still around. I think a second run of 50 Twisters was produced. The TwisterI was a build of 50 motors and 50 update kits. The offshore group got their motors from this build. The OPC Racing group covered their own needs.

The TII and TIIX were built at Hi Perf in Oshkosh. I think 100 of each were built, although they kept building the TIIX for a while. I would have assigned the serial numbers and kept the records. However, like a lot of things these days, I don't have a clue as to how I set that up. As Hi Perf grew, it moved to larger locations. I doubt that anyone boxed all that old serial number info and moved it each time. To finalize the bill of material for the TII build, we put the first motor together using the parts as listed.

...willa, you think that there was only 50 Twister One's built? It sure seemed like there was a pile of them run'n around back then...even when you consider the update kits...they were everywhere. But if anyone would know, that be you.

I agree, there was a number of them around back then. Just for grins, let's use the build numbers that I posted and come up with a hypothetical 1972 Havasu Single Engine Outboard World Championship .....

Monday - the first group to show up for testing are the 50 new TI's ..... they look great, sound good ..... we're off and running .....

Tuesday - here come the 49 Twisters that were converted to TI's (it's only 49 instead of 50 because Raceman still has a TI update kit in a box ) - we now have 99 entries trying to find a motel room .....

Wednesday - today 51 Twisters come rumbling through the gates (150 were built, 49 got converted and assuming offshore took 50 there would be 51 remaining) these motors are less than a year old with very few hours on them ..... entries are up to 150 ..... people are sleeping in their cars ..... are we done yet? .....

Thursday - Wait, wait ..... we haven't seen the Merc OPC Race Team and the boats they support yet - that number was always a moving target, but since it's the years biggest event, let's say this adds 30 more entries ..... 180 boat trailers are now moving sand around on the beach .....

Friday - But hold on, we're not quite finished ..... if you call the number on your screen right now, we'll add (at no additional cost) the Canadian's! As we all know, they have a fleet of 16' Molinari sprints powered by the Cowbell ..... they won't tell anyone how many they have, but considering all the noise they make about them, it must be at least 20 .....

So, based on those build numbers, we could have had 150/175 Twisters ready to put on a show for our hypothetical race Saturday. I think that says there were a pile of them runnin' around back then ..... Wow,wouldn't that have been a spectacle!

Man that would have been something to see and hear. Wonder where those motors all went. You look around today and they are one of the hardest to find motors..... lots ended up in the scrap yard, factory motors got turned back in ?

30 factory supported boats, is one of the numbers, that catches my eye.

How many extra powerheads and lower units, would you bring to a race, to support such a large assemblage?
