Spare stuff .....
Ya gotta' remember, 30 factory supported boats was for the hypothetical race. In the real world, for a race of this stature, we probably would have had no less than 12 and as many as 20 boats to look after. We would have packed 10/12 powerheads into 'Day Tripper' and about 20 speedmasters. Probably would have added a half dozen of the McI speedmasters ..... just in case.
That's 'Day Tripper' at our Havasu headquarters, the big truck with the side doors open, silver box, white cab .....

BP gearcases .....
Don't Forget? ..... Anyone that ever worked with those heavy, leaky, shaft breaking, gear crunching, stinky lower units will never forget them! When you tried to check the lube and it sprayed that green slop all over your clothes, you smelled worse than dead fish for days. I remember one exploding and getting that stuff in my hair. It was a hot day and as I perspired, that green goop kept running down my face ..... was one of the most miserable afternoons I ever spent at a race site.
1969 Havasu ..... don't remember how many, but we sure had a bunch of them in that race. There were triples, twins and singles all running those things. We took a big number of new spares and brought home an equal number of busted up units. I don't remember if those were the new SR units.
From Powerboat ..... mentions a couple of the triple Jones boats coming in for lower unit repair .....

...internal overpressuring was one of their issues. the two opposed rear propshaft seals could'nt handle it, so out went some oil, and in came some water, all the time. venting the case somehow would have taken care of that. it had a couple other issues. so many things we know better today, could improve that design.

All the SUPER BP’s were built with the SR. A lot of the BP’s had been modified—-

I had never looked at a cutaway of one of those units before. It looks like a left hand Super Speedmaster with a very fragile looking reverse gear and pinion added in the back. As I recall the left hand Speedmasters had a very high failure rate. That reverse gear doesn't look strong enough to survive any real force. What could possibly go wrong? But my experience was only with production type gear cases so what do I know?

That cutaway is the one I did......Got a cracked case from MK75 H..... milled it for display ….The interesting thing about that case was the middle shaft was missing the roller bearing.....You can see where the shaft was rubbing the case. All 3 gears are turning in Forward or R......Loaded for that rotation..... When in reverse.... the loading is Wrong and most of the load is on one pinion..... The prop shaft was kinda thin and let the gears walk..... JMO.....

...Later, when the T1's started being used on a few of the same offshore boats, the BP's actually did better than the alternative, which was a locked standard gearcase, which some were using. Still needed the spares though, of either gearcase. Did'nt shift the BP's either, which helped a lot. The need for full size propellers, was the issue, in offshore.
