This link connects directly with Westside Chapel Funeral Home. A lovely memorial video / photo album of Tom's life can be seen here. https://www.westsidechapelfuneralhom...masTom-Stickle

Tom Stickle mentioned to me at Tavares 2019, that after his Mercury employment (and he seemed to convey his displeasure of being eventually regulated to a Mercury position that he did not care for), that he was glad to be a Seebold Team member.

He told me he had high praise for Bill Seebold's driving skills.

I met Tom in 67 or 68. He was a professional butcher, lived in Dayton and raced Checkmates in the FJ class on weekends. His first factory ride was Havasu 68. He ran an 18' Molinari powered with a 1250 SBP (1350), one of four entered in their first race. He was running 1st overall at the 2 hour mark with that single engine rig, his first time in a tunnel boat!

He was hired in 69, about a year after the Merc OPC Race Division was formed and moved to Oshkosh with his wife Marcia and daughter "Peanut" His hiring was followed by that of Downard, Hering and Merten. He raced in all major events including Paris and Berlin. Set all the single engine marks for Havasu in 70.
Who would ever think, that a butcher slicing and serving cuts of meat in his local grocery store, would step into the cockpit of a race boat. And then from that passion, transition into a boat racing career.

Thanks to Willabee, we know more of Tom Stickle’s backstory.

It is interesting that, some people from the food industry are motivated to go into boat racing.

I think Tom is in the Team Mercury group picture at Havasu when they ran the T2 Molinaris? When the company disbanded the factory racing team, I'm guessing that Mercury Marine HR had to get "creative" in placing these guys in other employment positions. Must have been a "dream" to have been employed full time just be around the racing stuff?

...few people know that gary was an avid golfer. he was on the course when he died. even fewer people know that gary was a smith & wesson gun collector & aficionado & owned one of the largest, if not "the" largest, most complete, most valuable, and rarest collection of smith & wesson weaponry in the entire country...

    Dick Summerfeldt

I heard last night that Canadian Richard (Dick) Summerfeldt has passed away.

Having raced across several continents, Dick brought style, colour and commitment to Outboard Powerboat Racing. As his many friends will tell you, he enjoyed, and succeeded in, multiple careers... always having a story (or stories!) to tell. Charming and confident, this photo says it all.

OZ Winner, Dick Summerfeldt, stands on the podium with Johnny Sanders (2nd) and Koenie Rontgen (3rd).
