I lived in Oceanside for 14 months when I left the Marines. Skip Talbot was a great friend and a very talented guy. He lived in Carlsbad next to Oceanside. He and Ted Jones were really tight. Ted worked for Mercury but hung out with Skip a lot. I was at his house on a lot of weekends or at the races. Ted was also a great guy and told me many stories. We would go to Perris for the drags whenever they had them. When I first met Skip he had just blown over the hydro testing with Ron Jones. They rebuilt it as a Pickel fork. He also had a Stylecraft Cat with 3 110's and Speedmasters. Skip wanted me to drive it so we went to his landing in Carlsbad. He said it would run 88 mph. I loved it. Thats the boat he got hurt in at the Sacramento River Race. Ended his racing. His talent didn't go to waste though. He moved to Fallon Nevada and started building .50 cal civilian rifles. He is credited with starting .50 cal civilian shooting, and held almost all the records at one time. At the 67 drag nationals we had to lift him in and out of the hydro so he could run. I spoke to him just before he passed away at the range in his stand. He was happy, doing what he loved.

    Corvair outboard

In an earlier post on this thread someone wrote about a Corvair engine. At the drags in Perris sometime in 67 the Corvair was there. It ran surprisingly fast. I had to take a picture for non-believers.

When I started at Mercury in April '65 as a draftsman, I was in the blueprint room one day and saw this drawing tube labeled "C-6" Opened it up one my drawing board, it was blackline of a full scale rendering of a Corvair p/h on a Merc stock lower. So in some skunkworks at Merc somebody was thinking outside the box.

    B-

I don't recall ever seeing the T1s running cleaver props, only elephant ears. Maybe the T2s? But definitely not the T1s, correct?

There was definitely Elephant Ears propelling these boats, and maybe a Cleaver prop on some of the Mod VP too.

BILL, so sorry to hear about Rick. !!!!!
Never did tell you just how grateful i was for all your help and understanding [Havasu 1970}.
Was supposed to be Don Ross and me against the world—- but Don went and threw the boat over in Amsterdam. Injured himself so bad he never did race again.
America is a lonely place when you're on your own, You and the “BLOODY HOORAY”—stickers were a great comfort along with Alex and Dick Schneider —Bill Allen and Chunks. STONEY and Cubes. STICKLE and Seebold.
You all remained friends for life or until they died . ——- How the feck i ever reached 91 anyway is one of life’s great mysteries .

First four blade cleaver i ever saw was the one Phill Rolla Made and lent to Mike Downard at AURONZO .

    ..... Thanks Jackie

I'm very sorry to inform you guys that my brother Rick lost his battle with cancer this morning. Rick spent his entire working life in the marine industry. He was with the Mercury Race Team USA and also Mercury Australia. He loved everything about Merc Racing, especially the people he met and worked with. He was a great guy and a wonderful brother and will be missed big time by family and friends.

    Bill,
Both Meg and I send our condolences to you and Family. I always talked with Rick at all the Boats Shows while I was still in the business. I loved him and always looked forward to seeing him. Great guy. He will be missed.

Bill, my heartfelt sympathies to you and the Welch family.

I feel fortunate to have enjoyed a very nice conversation with Rick at the Lake Havasu reunion. As a young Canadian racer, I and many other supported drivers from our country, greatly appreciated everything that Rick, yourself and the team did for us. Very sorry for your loss.

Bill, so sorry to hear about your brother Rick.
I met Rick a few times at Regal sales training and we talked racing every time we could when there was a break.
Mark Rotharmel and I also talked with him at the Havasu reunion.
So glad I got to meet him and share our passion for the sport we love !!
