    20000 RPM, 2.4 litre, 780hp

For those of you who follow or want to see the latest 2.4 litre V-8 Formula 1 engine run on the dyno at 20000+ rpm, log on to www.cosworth.com and click on the V-8 dyno video. It's quite interesting to say the least. They are at just under 800hp and the engine has been running for only a few months so far. Rule changes went from 3 litre V-10's turning 19000 rpm to the 2.4 litre V-8's (for the 2006 season)to slow the developement of power. Rumor has it that Honda will break 1000hp by the Chinese GP in October with the last V-10's. Cosworth expects to be at or near 21000 rpm by years end.

But NASCAR builders do 800hp with a push rod engine and a single carb at only 8-9000rpm. No multivalve, multi injector voodoo required.

    Thumbs up Very cool Randy

I checked it out the other day when you posted this and forgot to reply. Now tell me why Merc didn't go with a 2 speed tranny and a lighter powerhead when they went to 4 stroke . Can't be any more complicated or expensive then a blower. Very cool link.

Those NASCAR guys try to conceal their technology, but they are much more sophisticated than they look. I was in awe when I toured some of their facilities and met some of them.

But a front running F1 team costs over $300 million, enough to pay for what, 20 NASCAR rides?

So sure, more money in F1 is spent on engineering.

Any bets on when Toyota starts running for the cup? A fraction of their F1 budget would be big bucks on a cup team.

Road and Track recently noted that a NASCAR engine's piston speed at 8000 is higher than a F1's at 18000 (rough numbers). Someone starting fresh without the years of development, and with no engine to benchmark, would take a long time and spend big money to make a big V8 turn 8000 rpm for hours.
