Pole setting Mercury 2.5 200 Tach setting??
I have a Faria universal tach, the setting on the back relate to the number of alternator poles.
# poles setting
4 1
6 2
8 3
12 4
The motor is 1996 Mercury 2.5 200hp /w 40 amp stator and 2 regulators.
Can someone help me with - How many poles does my alternator have?
What is a alternator pole? Is it the number of poles the number of "poles" with the wire windings on the stator?
Thank You

Alternator Poles
Fish,
This is good information, but it still didint tell me what a alternator pole or what to set my tach at.
If I did a trail and error method will I hurt the tach?

tach
the 12 pole is actually 12 pulse,or how many signals sent per revolution.
Some thing like that.I don't know if ithe tach will be damaged by the wrong setting.old rigs vegas xt 200 xri ----- eliminator daytona 23 twin bridgeport efi
newest rig 28 APACHE BRAVE twin 502 Mercs

Set it to 12 .........
That's where it needs to be for a V-6. Anything else will NOT damage anything, just give you the wrong tach reading.
