    Allison Question

Okay all you Allison guru's. I just bought an XR 2002. It's got a Merc 260 with a CLE case on it. This is my first experience with a fast V-bottom so I'm still learning. I'm finally getting into the mid 90's comfortably, when I get around 95 or so the bow seems like it wants to loose lift and fall. As soon as this happens I get out of the throttle. Is the beginning of it blowing out? I've heard that Allison's don't like the CLE cases over about 90. Is this the case? I'm running about 1/4" below the pad with what is supposed to be a 30" cleaver. I appreciate any info you guys could give me.

    Thumbs up

Greg,,, First off, Congrat's on the Ally!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Second off,,, I'm NO guru!!!!!!!!!!!!

But,, we run our XR with a stock 260 (and 26cc heads) to 105 without any problems!!!! And a 26" Tillman worked Yammy!!

But when "Sassy's Bow drops she keeps going straight!!!

We are 12" back set and above the pad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does your gear case have a nose cone??????

I'd try another prop or three!!!!!!!!

Now do you have to change your name to........"I got an Alley"??

I'd say your getting to the limits of an unmodified CLE at your current set-up...

You heard correctly. Allison published a small paperback book a few years ago called the "Red Book". In it on page 25 it states that a stock ( non modified ) CLE case has the potential to blow out at speeds above 90 MPH. Most Allison owners modify their CLE cases with a Bob's nose cone or a Tooters cone. If you have this mod done, tell them it is for an Allison. They will install the cone with a small tilt down ( 3/8" ) below the prop shaft so that the case provides more lift and also more water pressure at levels above the pad. I am running a modified CLE case on an Allison bass boat at speeds between 100 and 102 depending on water conditions.

    Cool I agree

with Ted. Either the prop is running out or the CLE is nearing blowout. Cleavers don't have much bow lift so it may be the prop as well. Don't drop the throttle too hard or you are going to hook the boat hard right. Try another style prop first. Your motor height sounds ok. Blunting the nose of the CLE will help. You want to use a file and round off the nose til its about the size of your ring finger or at least your pinky instead of being so pointed at the tip. Also if you have a 4 hole CLE filling in one of the outer holes completely with epoxy can help as well. I prefer to fill the starboard side while most people like to fill the port side outer hole. You could fill both and enlarge the 2 center ones if you wanted also. There are a few other mods that can help a CLE on an Allison as well. Do a search. Main thing is that the case is so short. Best to have Tooter or Bob's cone it for you. The above tips work well on a coned case also.

Just be like everybody else around here now (meaning on this lake) and run a Speedmaster and don't worry about it. Before the anti-Speedmaster hecklers chime in, we ran one on the yellow XR2002 and it worked great, and it was the little SSM with a 10" diameter blade. I think with a #4 and an 11 or 12" diameter it'd work great. Also................. I ran a #8 Speedmaster on the DR2001 Ally come to think of it.

Can you still buy the "Tooters"cone? Where would I find one? (I've got a backup 12" lower unit that needs the cone)

    Thanks!

    lower units

I ran a stock lower unit (side water pick up) on my nitro bass boat for years. That thing would run over 100 easy, and my motor would never blow up or out. Wait a minute, that speedo was kilometers per hour--hmm---never mind.

    Talking Good one

Thats a good one. LOL. Yep, you have to watch out for those 100mph Nitro boats running the Mississippi this time of year! Just run a radiator and a closed loop cooling system and you won't even need those darn water pickups ! Hehehe

    Wink Allison Set up

I have had a few problems with my ally but, never found it to be the boat or set up really. I tried all different set ups, the swirly feeling at high 90's was always the prop. Now other peoples experiances may have been different. I have a XB2002 Bass Racer with a stock 225 (no rev limiter). The best wheel for me has been a 28 ET, the only down fall is they don't last very long for the money you have to give for 'em. The et spinning at 7500+ want to start cracking blades. I have had two of them do the same thing. I put down some good numbers a few passes. On any given day I can run by myself 102-104 all day long. I have run 100 with a passenger a couple times. Different days different speeds. 3/4 above the pad wit 14 inches of setback is where I'm at. My 2 cents.........try Mercs over priced ET.

    Try Kevin @ R&R Propshop

He can do an ET copy out of a chopper, and they work good. http://www.randrpropshop.com

    Thanks for the help

Guys, thanks for the help. I'm gonna play with the set up and try to find a gearcase with a Bob's cone. Norris - chris and I have already mentioned trying the speedmaster, I think I need a better feel for the boat first so I can tell what works better or doesn't work better

You used to drive these things, I'll come by and you can show me what to do
