    Noisy sportmaster

I have a 98 300 promax. At idle in gear @ 550 rpms I can hear a dull clunking noise coming from the lower unit. The noise disappears at high idle, around 750 rpms.

I bought this motor used last February and it has made this noise since day 1.

I do run a 28 Bravo 1 prop and the noise seems less with a Mazco HP 4.

This unit does have the 2-piece driveshaft. Could that be where the noise is coming from?

I have pulled the case and replaced all the seals and impeller. When I had the driveshaft seal carrier out I spun the drive shaft and everything seems very smooth and tight.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Dave

Check the gear shifter cable adjustment. If it is slightly off, the clutch may not engage properly at low rpm.

That was one of the first things I checked. It appears to be completely going into gear. I adjusted the cable according to the service manual.

I marked the cables slop and centered the roller in the cam and have the cable in the center.

I also tried to turn the shift shaft with a pair of channel locks with the motor in forward gear and the shift shaft was all the way in forward gear.

    Thanks, Dave

    Sportmaster

What you are hearing is caused by the prop not being loaded, in other words, with the motor idling that low the prop shaft is banging back & forth on the clutch dogs, this is not unusual, just bump the throttle up a little like you have been doing & all will be fine, you can also hear this while running a motor on a hose with the unit in gear, also caused by no prop load.

    Thumbs up Thanks Lee

I am starting to feel better already.

I have been watching this thing like a hawk. After every outing I have been checking the oil and the magnetic plug and all is looking fine. The oil is still the same color as new and no metal on the plug.

This is my first 3.0 sportmaster, is this normal? Should I bump the idle up? I like the low idle, I'm sure it helps when putting the motor in gear.

    Thanks, Dave
