Question how do you start a boat building company?

i've got the experience, the shop, the tools, the mold. what goverment agencies do i need to comply with? how do i get recognized to be able to market a product. i have herd about the EPA. thats not my concern. what are the catagories, i've herd if you only build "race" boats you are in a less stringint set if peramiters. help somebody, please. all i get is a bunch of half answers. i'm ready to move ahead. thanks, fun out

The company I was working for was helping two different boat building companies implement new manufacturing and financial software to improve overall efficientcy...All I have to say is make sure your really, really, really do your homework before getting into this type of buisness...most do not make much profit.

At that time we discovered that boat manufacturing has a very high cost of material compared to sale price...in other words the materials needed to produce the final product are relatively high...and increasing production does not significantly reduce that cost. That is probably why you don't much if any consolidation in the boating industry.

For comparison both companies made a 20 foot boat...both had similar cost of goods sold...one company's profit was over twice as much as the other.

The better of the two companies had a niche market that was willing to spend much more...relative to cost...on a similarly sized boat.

If I were going into the boat building business, I would see what the market would bear on the type of hull you were building and then work backwards figuring cost of goods, overhead, insurance, marketing, staff, etc.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Thumbs up Call Jack Barsh

He could tell you how to start and run a boat building company(high performance)laws and regulations etc.My advice as a customer and not a builder would be to allways return phone call's,give the customer what you say you'll give them, dont start more projects than you can finish when you say they will be done(give deadlines and stick with them) Make a set price and stick to it and not have a different price on monday than friday for the same item or boat.Have a layup schedule and make sure each boat is built from that plan every time.Be there and oversee all operations at each phase of the build to insure your product is being built properly.Try not to treat your customers as if they are stupid.Pay your taxes and all vendor fee's or bill's so that the word C.O.D isnt haunting you every minute of the day.And as stated before,Build a boat that will sell and not specialty items that you have to try and hit a home run with every time one sell's.Marketing and personal relations are important.Dont screw over people.Pay what you owe and be fare.Have pride in the business that you do and thank your customers when they are leaving with there new boat.Dont be an arrogant A$$hole.Remember to uphold your end of every deal and go the extra mile in some cases to make things rite with dissatisfied customers.I have often thought about starting my own manufactureing company and have taken notes of what not to do and what you should or could do to be sucsesfull and make people happy. If I had the capital to start one I would be all over it.Good luck Kieth and go for it.Remember these things I have pointed out cause if you do HAPPY CUSTOMERS WILL TELL THERE FREINDS ABOUT THE WONDERFULL BUYING EXCPERIANCE THEY HAD WITH YOUR COMPANY... After you get a complete psycological evaluation, to understand how you came to have this condition , contact these folks:
    http://www.nmma.org/certification/pr...dex.asp?bhcp=1

They can tell you everything you need to know.

Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm, but your looking at going into one TOUGH business. I knew a guy who tried it, didn't get over ambitious, tried to build a pretty solid, low cost family boat. Lost everything he had by the time it was over. I would encourage you to talk to the other members here who are manufacturers before you take the plunge.

My family used to be in the boat building business. My dad has always said "you can make a small fortune in the boat business.....as long as you start with a large one." He says it with a chuckle, so I really do not know how literal he was.

    Best of luck!

    Red face thanks guys!

ever since my junior year of high school i've had this desire. i've worked 4.5 yrs in the sea ray factory, over 500 employee's. we put out 11 39-46' yachts a week. i was lead person over 5 departments and 28 people. since i've run my own trucking co. for going on 11 yrs now, and when i started in this business i herd alot of negative things also. i've got a mold for a jersey speed skiff. if you look at www.speedskiffs.com under boats by name, "sundog" is the last one to come out of my mold. it's a unique type of boat with a loyal following. they will be custom in the same sence all these "chopper" companies have so much success. ( orange co. ect.) i plan to first offer hulls for someone to complete themselves. as i can i will offer finished ready to run models. they are one of the most exciting classes to watch i have ever seen, i mean bring a croud to their feet! there will be an exhibition race at the marathon offshore races according to the schedule. thanks Rob, cuda, transomestand, and of course my ole pal Parker. Fish, you also, i've herd that about most business's cept the hot dog cart w/Parker in a thong fun out

Here is my 19'-6" Aussie skiff "RAIDER",it will be at a lot of vinteage evente this year.Built in 1970 and originally fitted witha single overhead 427 ci Ford and ran 108mph.
