Roy Ridgell & the Lake X Kid deliver a wooden Switzer Wing to Lake X in the 1960's.

Happy 4th of July, Independence Day!
In recognition to all the Airman & women (including P-38 pilots) and all the Wing Pilots on water.

When we delivered the Switzer Wing to Lake X, I do not remember which boat it was. And if John Bakos or Dave Craig drove it, or maybe both piloted it on different occasions. The late Roy Ridgell is not available to clarify my inquiries. Click image for larger version.

    One V8 or 3 inline 6's...?

5 decades later and Roy Ridgell, could have just one propeller on his Lake X race boat, instead of 3.

Pretty sure it was the second boat built. I was working for Dave at the time. It wasn't too far afterwards Dave had the V wing. I think that was number three.

There are pictures of two similar wings. One shows both of them tied up. The one called "Gulf Wind Marine" is also pictured completely aired out. I had always thought those two were the fastest of the wings.

This was the second wing, and the first one Dave Craig got. I remember coming to work one morning, and there it was, right outside Dave's office window. Seems like in the race he stuck his nose where it didn't belong.. This one was the one that ran the kilo at the Lake X Six Hour. Jon Culver had a Power Cat and Bakos drove the wing. It was back and forth for the record. After 3 runs they had to register again. Bakos came out on top as Culver blew his over. A very exciting day, and VERY COLD. I ran in my bathing suit for the G Record. Ice in the bottom of the boats when we started. When you are 18 years old at a major event like this one, nothing mattered. Bakos ran 80.493..and I miss him.

A couple of rough rides that, were not on Mercury Lake X or rigged in the shop.

Here is my first ride that was not smooth.
The Odell Lewis family and the Roy Ridgell family lived on the western boundary of Lake X property (not on the Lake). Lewis family never lived on the Lakes’ waterfront like the Bakos, Ridgell and other families did in the 1960’s. In the late 1960’s there was no more families (and I think bachelors too) living down by the lake.

So its probably around 1968 -1969 time frame, and Odell and Mona Lou (named boats after her) just finished riding their horses. So they were cooling off the horses and were about to feed the horses grain (which they love to eat, after eating grass all day long). And we did this same routine with our family horse too.

So Mona Lou (Odell’s wife) asked me if I wanted to ride the Palomino gelding. I have never ridden their horse before, but I gladly took up the offer. So I got up on the gelding, and I found out the timing was bad. Why, because this horse wanted the desired grain mixture to eat, not to go trotting again with another person on his back.

So I take the reins and turn the horse out toward the grass field, and then its rodeo time!!! Ten feet from the feeding trough and, it becomes bareback riding for me. The horse rises up and starts bucking, and now I know he is hungry and wants to eat. So after riding several bucking kicks, I use one of his upward thrust as a dismount ejection. And then land on my feet, and immediately the horse calms down. And now he gets to eat.

I think Odell had already gone into his house, and did not witness my acrobatic dismount on one of his horses.
The second rough ride no one witness. The approximate seven acre grass field had some oak trees in the north section. Which I climbed and they had a lot of moss hanging from those trees. So I am in one of the trees, and Odell had a couple of Brahma steers (that I think he was going to put in his freezer later).

    To be continued ...

    Mona Lou

My Second Rough Ride on land, near Lake X on the western property line.

I think Odell Lewis had already gone into his house, and did not witness my acrobatic dismount on one of his horses. The second rough ride no one witness. The approximate seven acre grass field had some oak trees in the north section. Which I climbed and they had a lot of moss hanging from those trees. So I am in one of the trees, and Odell had a couple of Brahma steers (that I think he was going to put in his freezer later).

So I started ripping off some of the moss from the tree limbs, and throwing it down for the cows to eat. Now the bulls are directly under me, enjoying their meal of moss. The bulls have their heads down eating moss. I then hung down from one the tree limbs. And the stars lined up, because directly a foot beneath my dangling feet is one the munching bulls.

I let go of the tree branch and its rodeo time again!!! And the identical same thing happens again with the bull as it did with the horse. (But I think the time frame was, I first rode or tried to ride Odell’s bull before I got on his horse). Needless to say the bull was surprised or really shocked, that something landed on his back. And his bucking instincts went into survival mode. And after several bucks, I dismounted and all was okay between the bull and me.

And in professional bull riding it’s a success to stay on for 8 seconds. I think on both accounts I succeeded. And to this day I do not think Odell Lewis knows, about my encounters riding his horse and bull. It was a real Kick in the rear.
    Yee Haw!!!

Relatives of the 8 Second rides.

Remembering OFF 2018 annual meeting held at Lake X, and Steve Sirois swan song.

    Old Farts Forever.

Steve Sirois speech honors the OFF groups main acting members and founders, for the annual event.
To right of Steve is seated Odell Lewis. And standing to Steve's right at the end of the table is
Bill Seebold, Jackie Wilson and Rich L.

And then the irony, at the end of Steve's speech, he pays tribute to "those who have gone before us."
And Lake X alumnus Steve Sirois, "has gone before us," but OFF 2019 continues on at Travares this week.
