Outboard Motors And Motercycles
All Racers,
Project idea, take a 2 stroke outboard motor and fit it into a motorcycle frame.
I am a engineer that always has too many projects going on. I am a long time motorcycle rider and racer. Currently about 150hp is all that the production motorcycle companies have produced to date. I know some of the larger outboard motors will produce far more 250-300hp. I would like to have some input from you guys if you think it will work or not. So far the only draw back I see is the limited rpm range of the outboard motor. I may be incorrect but a 300hp merc. will only turn 6k rpm stock. I don't know what the hot rod race motor turn. Give me some input!
Thanks,

The Merc 260 EFI will turn over 9000 stock, with no rev limiter.
THe 300 Drag will turn well over 10000 stock.
These are both 2.5 litre motors.
The 3.0 litre will not turn as many rpm's, but has a lot of torque.
If you could keep the 2.5 cool enough, I don't see why a good engineer wouldn't be able to do it.
I know some have put 2.4's in snowmobiles, and had a very fast machine. There have been other applications of these hi-perf outboard drop-on's also.
Good Luck, and keep us up to date.

It could be done
EFI motor should do the trick. Cooling system will be the real challenge. Seen a guy run a Johnnyrude in a midget and he didn't do to bad. Sounded so cool coming out of the corners.

An outboard that turns 6200-6800 has a WIDER powerband than any motorcycle. yes, it will only turn 6800, but it makes torque and HP between 1000 rpm and 6800. motorcycle engines might turn 12000 rpm (for example) but they only make useable power between 9000-12000 rpm. Which on a land vehicle with a transmission is ok. There is alot of potential for high rpm power in these motors, especially when fitted to a transmission. maybe eric simon can give you some pointers. he did a turbo, 2 stroke, sand car a few years back.

If they can do car engines and turbines in bikes
I don't see why you couldn't do an outboard motor? I heard a turboed Hayabusa is supposed to be good for 300hp and with NOS, lots more. Do you need to smoke the rear tire at 150mph??
