    Little Jet Boat engine Swap

Remember the crazy several years ago all the 14-16' jet boats. Well I am looking at one but it has a seized 90 hp Merc head it it. Can I swap it out with a larger one. I see some that have the V-6 260 hp Merc Head. Any info would be helpful.

Nope, won't swap. The 90's were Force powerheads and nothing interchanges with the Merc V6 stuff. The best you could hope for is finding a complete jet package and whackin the boat and putting the whole thing in it.

So if I find one with a Merc 115 or 120 I could swap in the bigger motor?

I'm not sure I understand the question, but none of the V6 stuff interchanges with the smaller stuff. I'm unfamiliare with Merc Sportjets between the 90 and 175, so I don't know if there's any interchangeability for the 90 and 115 or 120. I didn't know they made the latter 2, so I don't know what powerhead they're based on.

I am pretty sure the 120 sport jet was based off force as well but the 175 may be a 2 liter merc block...

The 175 is a 2.5. I have one of those now. There are also some bigger ones in both 2.5 and 3 liter configurations. I think the big 2.5 is a 225, but it may be 240.

Raceman what is the biggest downfall to the sportjet concept, why did it pretty much die and why are boat with this setup so cheap to buy used compaired to a standard outboard model. (for my example compairing the price of a 15' std whaler to a 15' whaler rage) thanks in advance for any input.

boomer sorry for the hi-jack but I think it is somewhat revelant to what you are trying to do

I don't know. There must be a lot of em still being sold around here based on dealer's inventories. The SeaDoos have had Merc Sportjets in them for a couple of years now. I don't know if that changed with the Bombardier/OMC deal. I've got a Sea Ray F16R with the 175 Merc Sportjet and it's a great little boat. Except for Merc's insane plastic oil pump gear that cost me a powerhead at 8 hrs (out of warranty by age) I have no complaints with mine at all. They're a bunch of fun and will do so much stuff that a PWC won't.

I sell the SeaDoos, some have mercs, some have Rotax engines.

The Rotax four stroke seems to be the way the squirt boats are going.

They are a popular boat, we sell a herd of em.

I thought about it after I typed it, I guess the market really didn't go away, just changed. Remember when every manufacture had a little sport jet boat (including whaler), none of them do anymore, but now most of the PWC manufactures have boats, some bigger ones with twins as well. So I knd of worded my eariler post incorrect.

Just think it is interesting that a 15' whaler rage is about half the price of a 15' whaler supersport

I currently have a 175 and needed a new power head so I used an older 175 outboard and got an 8 spline driveshaft manufactured (Sportjet powerheads are very hard to find in Aus). Now however I am looking at upgrading to a new 200 Sportjet. I am assuming that they're the same size hole for the installation... is that correct?
